  1. six player moves yesterday to remove three players and replace them with three players. tyler austin has his contract selected. he is out of minor league options and has accepted an outright assignment to the minor leagues more than once. he reserves the right to become a free agent if his club tries to send him to the minors after going unclaimed. jimmy nelson and brent suter both activated from the 60-day injured list. jeremy jeffress, troy stokes, jr. and aaron wilkerson all designated for assignment. the club has seven days to try to outright stokes or wilkerson to the minors or release them, and seven days to put jeffress on outright waivers or release him. if jeffress goes unclaimed, he can become a free agent. the 40-man roster remains at capacity.
  2. by cutting ties after 31 august, the club ensures that claiming or signing teams cannot use the player in the postseason--making them less desirable. makes it easier for stokes, jr. or wilkerson to clear waivers and remain in the organization if for some reason either needs to be added back again.
  3. i may be wrong, but i believe that a player who is optioned to a club whose season ends does not have to meet the 10-day requisite stay in the minors in order to be recalled. if this is true, the brewers could option chase anderson with his permission, recall travis shaw, and recall anderson tuesday. of course, this is a gamble in that if san antonio won all four remaining games, and round rock lost all four, san antonio's season would continue. unlikely scenario, but could happen. if anderson was optioned, he would not burn his final option and would be credited with a full year of major league service. he would, however, be required to travel to report to the class aaa club. of course, anderson (or another player) could be optioned to a club whose minor league season is guaranteed to end monday. anderson just makes the most sense for roster depth because his turn in the rotation would come up after tuesday.
  4. jimmy nelson and brent suter confirmed for sunday. they both need to be added back to a full 40-man roster.
  5. has mlb set the limit for pitchers on an active roster in 2020? it seems to be trending towards 13, but i haven't seen anything official. this is important for teams to know because it makes it easier to gauge if teams may be more inclined to stash a position player on their 26-man roster all season.
  6. corbin burnes will be given a start for san antonio this weekend against nashville.
  7. last night, david freitas was activated from the injured list. he extended his hitting streak with the missions to 14 games and his on-base streak to 29 games.
  8. there will be an interesting chain reaction if there is indeed a flurry of outright attempts by 29 august, in that claiming clubs may have to clear space on their own 40-man rosters by trying to outright another player. the 48-hour window for such would start on friday morning, meaning any player claim would be awarded 1 september or later, making that player ineligible for postseason play. like i said, things could get interesting in the next 53 hours . . .
  9. technically, he can't be claimed. he wasn't placed on outright assignment waivers. he was placed on outright release waivers, which means any team can sign him to a minor league or a major league deal.
  10. we all should know by now that players that were on a 40-man roster at any point in 2019 can no longer be traded to another team. however, teams may still make waiver claims, and any player that joins an organization by 11:59 pm eastern on 31 august is eligible for postseason play. it's my understanding that outright waiver attempts take 48 hours. thus, any player that is placed on outright waivers after 11:59 pm eastern on thursday would not clear waivers until after that 31 august deadline--which means that not all teams would have had the full allotted time to submit a claim and see if they are awarded that claim. thus, it's going to be interesting to see if there's a flurry of activity and a rush to attempt outright waivers of players by end of day thursday in order to allow all of the other teams a full 48 hours to make a claim before the 31 august deadline. we've seen that some veterans (joulys chacin and scooter gennett) have been given the courtesy of an outright release, presumably bypassing outright waivers altogether--giving the veterans more time to negotiate as free agents with any team.
  11. tyler saladino had a cortisone injection and is heading to arizona for rehab. unlikely that he will be activated from the injured list by the missions before their season ends. unknown at this point if he can or will return to help the club during roster expansion.
  12. shelby miller has exercised a release clause in his minor league contract and is now a free agent.
  13. worth noting that tyler saladino was in milwaukee yesterday for an mri on his shoulder. results not known yet.
  14. Heard he’s done for the year. source? this report from yesterday doesn't confirm that.
  15. I believe that Suter and Nelson can be activated after Sept. 1 and be playoff eligible, but Freitas would not be, as the AAA IL has no bearing on MLB rules. incorrect. any player in the organization on 31 august could be playoff eligible, if certain conditions are met.
  16. joulys chacin has been released. he is free to sign with any team.
  17. the athletic is seeking your vote on twitter . . .
  18. tyrone taylor has surged himself (hitting a three run homer already tonight). entering tonight's game, his august slash: .360 / .421 / .593.
  19. these factors need to be considered as september approaches and how aaron wilkerson fits in the club's plans: --the 40-man roster is full, and the club has indicated that jimmy nelson and brent suter will both be activated, which necessitates clearing two spots on the 40-man. either could pitch long relief. --a guy who could have returned to pitch in long relief is likely no longer part of the organization (joulys chacin). --the brewers are short a pitcher with jeremy jeffress on the injured list. --the brewers have only two off days in september. --the brewers could make a waiver claim by 31 august of an outrighted veteran (or two), necessitating space on the 40-man. --the brewers could select the contract of one or more prospects without any major league experience and take their chances with their development in a pennant race, also necessitating space on the 40-man. --the brewers likely will not carry seven outfielders on the 40-man in the offseason, especially if they add an eighth in corey ray. thus, one of troy stokes, jr. or tyrone taylor may be destined for outright assignment. --given that hernan perez and cory spangenberg are already on the active roster, tyler saladino is redundant, and given his injury, likely to be placed on outright waivers.
  20. Not weird at all. Gamel gets regular playing time, will be back when rosters expand, won’t burn an option, and gives us infield depth for the next week trent grisham would not have burned an option either.

  23. given that tyler saladino is likely lost for the season from an injury sustained while on optional assignment, it's very likely that he will be designated for assignment before 31 august to make room on the 40-man roster for another player. the brewers could opt to recall saladino and then place him on the 60-day injured list in order to open up a spot on the 40-man, but in doing so, he would accrue major league pay and service time. given that he, hernan perez and cory spangenberg are all out of options in 2020, it's quite likely that saladino's days in the brewers organization are coming to an end.
