  1. alex wilson has been released by the brewers. having been outrighted to the minor leagues this season, he was ineligible to be traded after the 31 july deadline. by having been granted his release, he is free to sign a major league contract with any other club for the remainder of the season, and the brewers would be off the hook for the majority of the remainder of his 2019 salary. the brewers clearly felt that there were better options than alex wilson to help them conclude the regular season and win in the postseason. this may have been a courtesy to a veteran to allow him to latch on to another team.
  2. not necessarily. the process of clearing waivers you're describing is an outright assignment. the player is outrighted off the 40-man roster and sent outright to the minor leagues. the first time that this happens for any player with under five years of mlb service, the club retains all rights of control. the player must accept the outright assignment to the minor leagues. however, once said player accepts an outright minor league assignment from any major league club (note not an optional minor league assignment), he reserves the right to refuse any subsequent outright minor league assignments. if he does so, he voids his contract and becomes a free agent.
  3. the brewers attempted to outright jacob barnes and donnie hart to the minor leagues. neither player cleared waivers. barnes has claimed by kansas city and optioned. donnie hart was claimed by the new york mets and optioned.
  4. barnes is claimed by kansas city and optioned.
  5. bringing this forward as jay jackson was optioned today. barring replacing an injured player, jackson will be required to be optioned for at least 10 days, so a prompt recall may keep him from burning his first option.
  6. it should also be noted that any brewer currently in the minor leagues on optional assignment (still on the 40-man roster) cannot be traded until after the world series.
  7. another scoreless inning for suter yesterday in his second rehab outing. struck out all three hitters faced on 13 pitches--11 for strikes.
  8. Does a player need to be on the 40 man roster on August 31st in order to be eligible for the postseason roster? no, per rules cited here. without requiring a petition to the mlb commissioner, all players on the 40-man roster and 60-day injured list as of 11:59 pm (est) on 31 august are eligible for postseason play. restricted list players (provided that they haven't been suspended or served a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs during that season) are also eligible for postseason play. however, the brewers could petition the commissioner to replace an injured list player with any other player in the organization as of 31 august, provided that said injured player has already served the minimum amount of time required for activation. example 1: corey knebel is out for the season. he's already met 60 days on the injured list. the brewers could petition the commissioner to add danny coulombe to their postseason roster (but would need have a 40-man spot open for him). example 2: jimmy nelson is activated from the injured list during september roster expansion. he suffers a season-ending injury in the first week and is placed on the 10-day injured list. once nelson spends 10 days on the injured list in september, the brewers could petition the commissioner to add alex wilson to their postseason roster and could create a spot for him on the 40-man by transferring nelson from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list.
  9. this new trading deadline has ramifications for brewers minor leaguers who held 40-man roster spots this year. this is my understanding of the rules regarding the trading of outrighted players . . . as outlined here, a player who was on the 40-man roster (a major league contract) who has since* been outrighted off the 40-man (and is now on a minor league contract) cannot be traded from yesterday's 31 july deadline through the conclusion of the 2019 world series. *it's unclear what since means, but the brewers did not outright any players in the offseason after the conclusion of the 2018 world series, nor did the brewers outright any players during 2019 spring training. i assume that this rule applies to any player outrighted by his current organization after the conclusion of the 2018 world series, and not opening day. these outrighted players are currently in the brewers' organization, and with this new rule, cannot be traded until after the world series concludes. they're all eligible to become minor league free agents, so it's pretty much a guarantee that they will finish the season as property of the brewers . . . unless granted their release. alex wilson cory spangenberg hernan perez deolis guerra jacob barnes and donnie hart could be added to this list if they clear waivers and are outrighted by the club. the brewers are still able to select the contract of any of these outrighted players and add them to the active roster (and in the case of spangenberg, select his contract and option him immediately) before the season ends. all are eligible for postseason play with the brewers if they are in the organization still on 31 august.
  10. the brewers have seven more games before the next off day. three optioned pitchers who were eligible to be recalled at any point because they had been optioned for at least 10 days are no longer on the 40-man roster: jacob barnes, marcos diplan and donnie hart. barring replacing a player put on the injured list, these are the only pitchers that are eligible for recall as of today: ray black (he has been on optional assignment since 16 july with the giants when he was acquired and optioned by the brewers) trey supak aaron wilkerson these players must wait 10 days from the date of their optional assignment before being eligible for recall: burch smith (optioned 24 july) corbin burnes (optioned 31 july) jake faria (optioned 31 july) taylor williams (optioned 1 august) bottom line: the brewers need their starters to go deep the next seven days and keep the bullpen from being overworked in order to justify carrying seven outfielders on their 40-man.
  11. Arcia has to play every inning for a while but if Arcia gets hurt they can just bring Saladino right back. if within the next 10 days, a player would have to be placed on the injured list in order to recall saladino. it wouldn't have to be arcia placed on the injured list--just any player.
  12. thank you as well for clarifying. if i understand correctly, the only hopes that barnes has of getting on a 40-man roster again in 2019 are: --being claimed by another team after being placed on outright waivers by the brewers; he is then either optioned or recalled --not being claimed by another team, being forced to accept the outright assignment to the brewers' minor leagues, but then having his contract selected again by the brewers (see jay jackson's transaction history this year) --given his outright release and then signing a major league contract with another club
  13. for further details on the new trade deadline rules, this trade could not have happened today. the brewers had the freedom to negotiate exclusively with the twins yesterday. the only ways that the twins could have acquired diplan after 31 july: --submitting a waiver claim to add him to their 40-man roster (and chancing that other teams ahead of them in the waiver claim process do not claim diplan themselves). --wait for the brewers to opt to release diplan, instead of the brewers outrighting him. he'd then be a free agent and free to sign with any team.
  14. it appears that barnes would have to be claimed by another team, not traded. this means that the brewers would have to intend to assign barnes to the minor leagues, but first, they would have to offer him to all 29 teams, any one of whom has the option to submit a waiver claim and add him to their 40-man roster and either recall him or option him. if barnes clears waivers and is outrighted to the minor leagues, it appears that he cannot be traded until after the world series (but he may be eligible for minor league free agency by that point).
  15. trent grisham has his contract selected from class aaa san antonio. he has three minor league options. jacob barnes, who was on an optional assignment with class aaa san antonio, has been designated for assignment. the brewers have seven days to try release or outright barnes to the minors. if barnes clears outright waivers, he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment. if barnes is claimed, he is placed on the claiming team's 40-man roster and is either recalled or optioned by the claiming team. barnes will enter 2020 spring training with no minor league options remaining, but can be optioned in 2019 if another club claims him. the 40-man roster is at capacity.
  16. jacob barnes, who was optioned to class aaa san antonio, has been designated for assignment. the brewers have seven days to try to release or outright barnes to the minors. if barnes clears outright waivers, he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment. barnes will enter 2020 spring training with no minor league options remaining. trent grisham takes barnes' spot on the 40-man roster.
  17. wow. with the optioning of tyler saladino, travis shaw is considered a backup shortstop.
  18. with tyler saladino optioned today, the brewers do not have a true backup shortstop. saladino must remain optioned for at least 10 days. perez has been hitting well with san antonio. one has to wonder if his contract will be selected shortly . . .
  19. travis shaw, trent grisham and eric thames all in the starting lineup today. perhaps shaw is indeed up for the long term . . .
  20. of note . . . these players are or could be eligible for free agency after the conclusion of the world series, which would remove them from the 40-man roster if they do not sign a major league contract with the brewers: matt albers jhoulys chacin gio gonzalez yasmani grandal (mutual option for 2020) jordan lyles mike moustakas (mutual option for 2020) drew pomeranz eric thames (club option for 2020) these players are on the 60-day injured list and will have to be added back to the 40-man or outrighted to the minors: corey knebel brent suter bobby wahl as many as eight spots could potentially open up, with up to three spots taken by players activated from the injured list.
  21. it's unclear if the brewers will carry 12 or 13 position players until september roster expansion, but it appears that ryan braun will see some time at first base (but not this weekend against the cubs).
  22. assuming the brewers stick with a 13-man pitching staff, it's hard to think that the brewers would option ben gamel to make room for grisham on the 25-man. i suspect it's ryan braun to first, with travis shaw optioned.
  23. in a move that will cost him salary and major league service time, the brewers opted to end corbin burnes' rehab assignment (started 27 july), and instead, reinstated him from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to class aaa san antonio. unless replacing another player placed on the injured, paternity or bereavement list, burnes must remained optioned for a minimum of 10 days.
  24. the trade with the san francisco giants is official. the brewers send mauricio dubon for drew pomeranz and ray black. pomeranz is eligible for free agency after the season ends. black can still be optioned this year, but will enter 2020 spring training with no minor league options remaining. to make room on the 40-man roster, the brewers designated donnie hart for assignment. the club has seven days to trade, release or try to outright hart to the minors. if hart goes unclaimed and clears waivers, he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment and will remain in the brewers' organization for the remainder of the season. the 40-man roster remains at capacity.
