  1. i'm predicting jacob barnes dfa'd, and jay jackson optioned when drew pomeranz reports to the club. the brewers keep burch smith as starting pitching depth on the 40-man behind aaron wilkerson.
  2. it's been reported that black will be optioned by the brewers. a player still needs to be removed from the 40-man, and it likely will be via designating a pitcher for assignment. if the brewers dfa a pitcher on the active roster, they're essentially playing with a 24-man roster tonight. if they dfa an optioned player, that player is off-limits to a minor league affiliate. aaron wilkerson is the scheduled starter tonight for the missions. trey supak and donnie hart are probably safe. jacob barnes or burch smith, probably not as safe.
  3. technically, jordan lyles was activated yesterday by the brewers, but that must have been post-game. lyles is able to take the 25-man roster spot vacated by jesus aguilar. the brewers can wait (probably until tomorrow) to determine if they want to activate jake faria (which would require a corresponding move on the 25-man), or option him.
  4. jake faria officially acquired from the rays in exchange for jesus aguilar. faria can be optioned this year, but will enter 2020 spring training with no options. officially, the roster remains at 40.
  5. a player will need to be bumped off the 40-man to make room for one of these two acquisitions. ray black is currently optioned, and will burn his final option this year. drew pomeranz is out of minor league options.
  6. barring a trade or injury of jesus aguilar, mike moustakas or eric thames, i'm not convinced that travis shaw is up for the long term. even with five off days in august, i doubt that the brewers will continue with a 12-man pitching staff.
  7. reported here and here that it was for $3.5 million.
  8. Yes, if a team claims him he'll go on their 40-man roster. Because of that I think there's a decent chance he passes through waivers and remains in the organization. if the brewers try to outright diplan to the minor leagues and he is claimed, he is added to the claiming team's 40-man roster, who can decide to recall him or option him to one of their minor league affiliates. if diplan goes unclaimed, he can be outrighted to one of the brewers' minor league affiliates. he has not been outrighted before, so he will be forced to accept the assignment and remain in the organization. if outrighted, he can become a minor league free agent after this season.
  9. jordan lyles acquired from the pirates for a minor leaguer. lyles is out of minor league options and will be a free agent after the season ends. to make room for lyles on the 40-man, marcos diplan has been designated for assignment. the club has seven days to trade, release or try to outright diplan to the minors. a corresponding move still needs to be made on the 25-man roster to accommodate lyles. the 40-man remains at capacity.
  10. a corresponding move will need to be made on the 40-man roster to make room for lyles.
  11. the club knew that when he was recalled.
  12. only one start in the first three games . . .
  13. it should be noted that if shaw is being recalled to take the place of an injured jhoulys chacin, burch smith (who has been used exclusively as a starter with san antonio) cannot be recalled until eight days from now, as smith must meet the requisite 10-day stay optioned to the minors (unless replacing another injured player).
  14. with an off day today and monday, the brewers don't need another starter for the immediate future. if tuesday in oakland is start by committee, the club can afford to keep shaw through the series in oakland and use him or another infielder as the dh. but after the oakland series, barring a trade at the deadline, i wouldn't be surprised to see him optioned back down . . .
  15. taylor williams rejoins the big league club, with burch smith optioned to san antonio. williams was often passed over by recently optioned pitchers replacing a player placed on the injured list (in which the 10-day requisite stay in the minors is null). from an organizational depth standpoint, it made sense for the likes of burch smith and corbin burnes to be recalled while they had yet to fulfill their 10-day requisite stay, but it also meant that williams was often passed over. class aaa opponents have batted just .163 against williams this season, and he's struck out 45 in 40+ innings. williams is out of minor league options entering 2020 spring training.
  16. joe winkelsas agrees with you.
  17. dontrelle willis and alfredo figaro are pleased that drew smyly sought his release from his minor league contract with san antonio. he is now a free agent.
  18. bringing this forward as jackson's contract was selected yesterday while optioning mauricio dubon. if the brewers wish to outright jackson to the minor leagues again, he reserves the right to refuse the assignment, voiding his contract, and become a free agent. however, jackson still has all three minor league options intact, and is still 18 days away from burning his first option. the roster is at 40.
  19. technically, jackson was not recalled. only optioned players can be recalled. jackson had his contract selected. jackson still has all his minor league options intact.
  20. deolis guerra has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to the minor leagues.
  21. deolis guerra has been designated for assignment. the brewers have seven days to trade, release or try to outright guerra to the minors. burch smith has been recalled (raise your hand if you remembered that he was still on the 40-man). guerra is out of minor league options, and has been outrighted to the minor leagues before. if the brewers wish to send deolis guerra to the minor leagues, he must first clear waivers. if he is not claimed by another team, he reserves the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent. the roster is at 39.
  22. as we now know, hernan perez went unclaimed and accepted an outright assignment to san antonio. he will be a minor league free agent after this season. the 40-man spot vacated by him didn't stay open for long. deolis guerra has his contract selected from san antonio, with aaron wilkerson being optioned there. guerra is out of minor league options, and has been outrighted to the minor leagues before. if the brewers wish to send deolis guerra to the minor leagues, he must first clear waivers. if he is not claimed by another team, he reserves the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent. the roster is at 40.
  23. deolis (day-oh-lis) guerra had his contract selected from san antonio. aaron wilkerson optioned there. guerra is out of minor league options, and has been outrighted to the minor leagues before.
