    jake faria, with an 8.10 era and hitters batting .357 against him as a brewer, has been optioned to san antonio. ray black has been recalled. faria must remain optioned for at least 10 days unless replacing an injured player.

    worth noting: if a player spends less than 20 days total optioned in a given season, he does not burn that option and is granted a full season of major league service. you may recall that this happened with keon broxton in 2017, preserving his final option in 2018. it's notable that we're now at the point where if a player is promptly recalled on 1 september, he will have spent less than 20 days optioned from this date. these active players can be optioned but have not been optioned at all yet in 2019: chase anderson (requires his consent), orlando arcia, alex claudio, ben gamel, trent grisham, josh hader, freddy peralta, eric thames (requires his consent) and devin williams. however, it should also be noted that 2019 is the last season where rosters can expand to 40 in september.

    the giants have claimed burch smith off outright waivers and added him to their 40-man roster.

    not that long ago, the number of days that a team had to trade, release or outright a player after designating him for assignment was 10 days. it was reduced to seven days with the latest collective bargaining agreement. i wonder if the players will push for a reduction of that time period for dfas made after the unitary trade deadline through the end of the world series. seeing as trades can't be made after the 31 july deadline, the club has two options: try to outright the player or give him his outright release. the club no longer gets anything in return (except for $50,000 for the potential waiver claim and potential salary relief), so it's not like they need time to negotiate with other clubs on a potential return. thus, i wonder if it makes sense to keep the seven-day period for a dfa before the unitary trade deadline, but perhaps down to three or four days after the unitary trade deadline. i haven't followed the post-deadline transactions of other teams, but the brewers have certainly moved quickly in their outright attempts of donnie hart and jacob barnes.

    christian yelich has back issues. lorenzo cain has taken a beating. orlando arcia could use a break. david freitas couldn't fill those holes. barring the outright attempt of yasmani grandal, i'm confident that freitas will be up 1 september, even before san antonio's season ends--and especially if some pitchers that he's caught are also recalled 1 september. jacob nottingham will follow once san antonio's season ends, as freitas has been far more consistent offensively this year than nottingham.

    burch smith has been designated for assignment. the brewers have seven days to outright or release smith from the organization. if another team claims smith, he can be optioned, but will be out of options in 2020. if another team does not claim him, smith reserves the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent--voiding his contract. hernan perez has his contract selected for the second time by the brewers. perez is out of minor league options. the 40-man roster is full.

    a player must first clear waivers in order for a club to attempt to outright him to the minor leagues--whether or not it's the first outright attempt or not.

    the brewers currently have seven outfielders on the 40-man roster, and non-roster corey ray is eligible for the rule 5 draft this year unless added.

    it should be noted that players with a full no-trade clause in their contract or players with ten-and-five service (ten years, the last five with the same club) cannot be placed on irrevocable outright waivers. they can be released, but there's no way for another club to immediately assume responsibility for the remainder of the player's contract. we're not aware of any players on the brewers with a full no-trade clause, but ryan braun certainly qualifies as a ten-and-five player.

    you're assuming that those players would definitely be claimed. it's a safe assumption, but it's not a sure thing. it's a relatively safe gamble for salary relief for the remainder of the season, but as mentioned, if the player goes unclaimed, the club is on the hook for the remainder of the contract for any players with five years-plus service. a club may not request outright waivers on a player with a complete no-trade clause or on a player who has ten-and-five rights. grandal has enough service time to refuse the outright assignment to the minor leagues, but he cannot block being claimed by any other team (unless he happens to have a complete no-trade clause, which we haven't gotten indication of). ryan braun qualifies for the ten-and-five rights (ten years of service, five with the same team), so the brewers cannot request outright waivers on him.

    at this point, a club puts a player on irrevocable outright waivers. if no other team claims him (and thus, the remainder of his contract), the club can outright said player to the minor leagues. however, if said player has enough service time, he can refuse the assignment and ask for his release. the club is on the hook for the remainder of his contract, until he signs elsewhere. or, if the player has been outrighted before, but doesn't have five years' service time, he can refuse the assignment and become a free agent--but that voids his contract. the player can accept the minor league assignment, but then said player cannot be traded until after the world series--and the minor league season at all levels ends in early september. said player could have his contract selected again by the major league club, but he'd be taking up a 40-man and an active roster spot. so, yes, the brewers could put mike moustakas on irrevocable outright waivers, but if he went unclaimed, he would reserve the right to refuse the assignment and the brewers lose him to free agency, while still paying him for the remainder of 2019 and his buyout for the mutual option.

    devin williams has his contract selected from class aaa san antonio. he has all three minor league options intact. to make room on the 40-man roster, jimmy nelson was transferred to the 60-day injured list. the roster is at capacity.

    This. Haven’t heard of any additional move. Plenty of dead weight to pick from. Burch Smith seems like the choice. the brewers are currently carrying seven outfielders and are likely to add corey ray this offseason.

    those days are gone. august 2018 was the last time that revocable waivers could happen. they're irrevocable waivers now. the team must commit to removing the player from the 40-man roster, and potentially, the organization entirely.

    yes, grandal or moustakas could be designated for assignment in august, forcing the brewers to either try to outright them to the minors by clearing waivers (either has enough service time to refuse the minor league assignment), or release them. advantage of the new club to signing a released player: the new club pays a pro-rated minimum and the original club is on the hook for the majority of his remaining salary. disadvantage of waiting until the player is released: competing with 28 other teams on the free market, as opposed to just the teams ahead of you in the waiver claim process, and the acquiring team assumes all responsibility for the remainder of the contract. any team could submit $50,000 to the brewers and claim either on outright assignment waivers. the claiming team would be responsible for the remainder of the player's contract--including the mutual option for 2020 in the case of grandal and moustakas. i think it's reasonable to expect that many teams will try to expose veteran players to outright waivers in late august.
