  1. I watched -- "The Black Dahlia" This movie was a mess. Probably one of the worst movies I have seen in awhile. They took one of the country's most infamous murders and turned it into a subpar episode of "Crossing Jordan". I watched the DVD extras, hoping to find out more about the history behind the case. All I got to watch was some drivel about how the movie "came together" -- I felt like screaming at the TV "Have you watched this movie, you accomplished nothing that you tried to do". Maybe they watched something on the History Channel and confused it with this movie. Avoid.
  2. Yeah -- I had a co-worker, almost exactly like Andy -- Very high-strung -- a total suck-up, and incredibly underhanded. Our owner at the time was a very religious person -- this guy went to the owner, "concerned about the religious makeup" of the company, and played on the owner's religious insecurities. He tried to convince the owner that some of the people ahead of him on the food chain were "the wrong religion", and actually went out into a guy's car and took a small novelty Buddah statue out as "evidence". I also remember we would have Xmas parties, and he would make comments out loud, about the gifts some people gave, -- i.e., if there was a Disney DVD, -- he'd say "you have to wonder about the values of the people on both ends of that gift". As GM (in my younger less ethical days) I used to get the mail to the company that wasn't specifically addressed to a dept. -- Back in about 1998 -- some guy used to send us letters with all sorts of numerology predicting the end of the world in 2000. Anyway whenever I got these letters, I would readdress and remail them to our "Andy" after I added "Andy's" personal information to the letter, Phone#, last paycheck number, licence plate #, etc. -- He would go absolutely mental, but it was funny. The resemblances are creepy as well, -- I get queasy watching Andy on The Office.
  3. Mexican Lemoñadé I may have over-reacted. Andy reminds me of a guy who used to work in our office so much it makes my stomach queasy
  4. I saw 3 movies -- I think all of them addressed in this thread -- but to add something to the reviews... Little Miss Sunshine -- I was not blown away by this movie -- but I think it was very clever, the characters are great, and I suspect some viewers may identify with them more than others. Very enjoyable and easy movie to watch... but nothing I am going to hurry up and watch again. The Descent. -- Holy Moly. I am a horror junkie. This movie is pure evil, and I fell asleep with VH1 on the TV just to be safe. I think I would have tweaked a couple of aspects of the movie, but this was the scariest thing I have seen in a long time. I am convinced that Lions Gate does not make bad movies. The Proposition -- Very entertaining on a lot of levels. I liked the Australian setting, and the complexity of the situation that the 2 main characters were in.
  5. Childhood obesity. I agree -- this is a big problem I disagree about getting child services involved, as I don't think the gov't schools can do a better job. Here is what bugs me about the situation. 1.) Schools selling soda/candy. -- I am not sure why this needs to happen. 2.) Schools letting McDonald's, Pizza Hut, etc., run their cafeterias -- I cannnot imagine what good they think is going to come out a kid putting down a personal pizza, or #1 value meal 5 days a week for lunch. 3.) Gym Class -- Speaking of my school system -- our gym class is about as useless as it gets. My kids come home with tests for "the rules of floor hockey" -- I appreciate the need to teach kids about team sports -- however, I think it more important for kids to learn about food and the way their body processes it. I suspect that a lot of kids (and adults) are fat, because they are ignorant to how to manage their bodies. I wish they would set up a gym class where students were given an evaulation at the beginning of the year of their health, and given a way to evaluate their caloric intake, and a way to increase their exercise if that be exercise bikes, lifting weights, track running, aerobics, etc... I'd rather see a kid moving that standing in a corner with a gym hockey stick
  6. I saw one I liked the other night -- Hard Candy It's about a 14 yr old girl, and a 35ish yr old guy, and their blossoming predator/prey relationship. I am always astonished by movies, that have 2 or 3 characters and take place inside a house/room. It takes well written dialogue and interesting stories and characters for this to happen. This one delivers.
  7. Al probably thinks hookers should be able to set up trailers next to the Wii lines I don't have any idea about Al's views on hooker-trailers... however, I am a big supporter of hooker-trailers... However, the problem with this statement -- is that it doesn't fit the 3 step profitiability test. Step 1. -- Set up Hooker Trailers Step 2. -- ????? Step 3. -- Profit. I don't know what Step 2 is, but I am relatively assured that in order for hooker-trailers to be profitable, they can't be set up where the "gamer geek/normal human male" ratio is greater than probably .05 or so. -- In this scenario -- the ratio is obscenely high probably 30 to 1 or so. -- It just would fail. It would be like setting up an Olive Garden in Sturgis. I suspect Al would not support the hooker-trailer at this point.
  8. Why is it greedier to want the market value of the system rather than the system? Well -- From a pure humanistic approach -- If there is 20 units at Target, there are probably 30 moms/dads trying to get this as a gift for their kid in a line for a unit. If I camp out in line and buy a unit, just so I can sell it in the parking lot to mom/dad #s 19-30, I think that is very questionably unethical, and certainly greedy. Because at the end of the day, there is probably some parent that will pay more in the parking lot to make their kid happy. While they could certainly not pay, it is not an example of free-market, rather artificially created markets generated to take an advantage of someone that is in a compromised position. IMO -- I have no interest in a WII -- so I am happy to let the moms/dads and gamer geeks battle it out, rather than inserting myself in the mix, just so I can make 50$. It seems very greedy to me.
  9. Great Episode I loved the exchange between Toby and Dwight about the goose -- and the Dwight talks about saving the "goose oil" rather than buying it in the store
  10. I also loved Creed using paper clips to play with the baby. You can't give babies paperclips -- they will swallow them Creed: That's OK -- I have plenty. I suspect that the nursing lady will be the next to quit. I also liked Kevin's quote regarding what Martin got arrested for, and how he "made him repeat it 3 times, as it sounds like what he does every single day."
  11. I thought that the Staples endorsement thing was funny, as that is their biggest competitor, and the week before, the bike-guy left their company to go work for Staples.
  12. So these lines that people are starting outside of Target and whatnot...are they legally binding or anything?... Would there be anything wrong with this (besides morally)? I am not a lawyer. In my best estimation, the lines are in fact legally binding, especially in the state of Wisconsin. I am assuming (because Target is owned by the French), that they have ample stock of the PS3, but are making world-class citizens like your roommates wait in line, because waiting in line is unAmerican and de facto is unpatriotic. Legally speaking, your e pluburus unum rights are waived once you enter into a legally binding contract with a non-US entity like Target. Because of the Habeus Corpem act of 1978, (thank you very much Jimmy Carter), Target is considered foreign soil, and in fact is considered a save-haven and embassy for France. So -- the good news about butting in line, is that while you are not entering into a legal contract with the French, -- the down side, is that you will be considered a French national -- our activist judicial branch made this law in 1989 in (Clarence Thomas v. Penthouse Forum, French Edition). While your roommates may be skilled in fisticuffs and tomfoolery, it won't matter because, part of your roomates deprogramming will include eating snails and watching hours upon hours of French cinema. You will probably never see your roommates again. However, all of this is legal, which is why it is so important to vote to ensure that the French do not have these loopholes to work with. Hope this helps.
  13. "Where did you get that salad?" "Staples"
  14. In all fairness I think they are happy, not necessarily gloating
  15. "I have to make sure no one steals the shoes"
  16. Are we locked into a certain game/city -- I am all for the roady, however, but like Russ weekdays are much harder to work around.
  17. Yes -- Solid episode again -- It continues to be clever.
  18. "Don't be naive... You can be in charge of the women"
  19. I suspect they will keep Jim where he is -- so that the writers can have him interact with different characters w/o jamming them in the Scranton office.
  20. I've got a good one. Recently I was staying on business in a large hotel (many floors). I was heading to the elevator, there was a dude standing in front of the doors waiting for the elevator -- I asked him the obligatory "heading down?" he pleasantly nodded so I smiled back and waited with him for the elevator to arrive (the down arrow was lit). About 15 seconds later this drillhead heads to the elevator and proceeds to mash the elevator button 47 times. First -- buttons generally only need to be pushed once, the elevator doesn't move any faster if you mash the button. Second -- Who does this guy think he is? -- The only person that knows how elevators work? -- and that we are too stupid to push the down button? This also applies to crosswalks, and the bells at checkout lines or service desks.
  21. "Who works with anybody like that? Given all the other characters are realistic." Dwight is realistic... His character is unique, however, I have certainly worked with people that could be inspirations for Dwight. I know The Office may seem over the top, however, I have run an office for 12 years now, and here are my top things that could be included in that show. 1.) I had an employee bring a TV to work. 2.) The owner at the time blessed all of the computers in the office with actual holy water, during office hours of course. 3.) I got a call at 3AM from a recently fired and drunk salesperson, who just informed me that he just got off a conference call with all the retail store buyers and that they all agreed to never buy our products again. 4.) About every 4 months, the company would get letters from this dude in Virginia that would use "numerology" to predict the end of the world. I would readdress and remail the letter to the owner who blessed all of the computers, and add the owner's personal effects to the letter, like his most recent check gross pay, his licence plate, etc... 5.) I had to field a sexual harrassment complaint between a janitor (female), and our accountant from Venezuela. He spoke broken English, and the he told the janitor she was making him crazy -- he was referring to the vaccuuming noise she was referring to something else... 6.) The owner used to work for a coffee distribution company -- like the kind who sell beans and grinders to supermarkets and 7-11s. He ordered coffee for one day so he could rub his former co-workers nose into his "success".
  22. That's it -- we need to fire someone -- The acting coach's head needs to be on the block. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif It was the first episode -- I was chuckling non-stop. MF mentions the sad-dark-mean aspect to this show -- I really think that, this is what makes the show what it is. You have a bunch of miserable people in a miserable location -- one thing that bothered me about Cheers, where in my experience, people that spend all their free time at the bar while funny still has a depressing element to it. My favorite lines -- "Now my house has TWO toasters" (besides the ones already mentioned). I also dug the "...that's what she said... or he said" at the very end as well. As far a Roy's character -- I suspect that the writers didn't want to ignore him altogether, as Roy is the link to the other employees in the company -- I thought the "I'll win her back" line was in line with his character -- being too dense to really understand why she ended the marriage. I think Jim being in a different office will work well for awhile as well. It gives the writers another office and "cast" to get some fresh gags.
  23. Well -- here's hoping that it doesn't happen. Perhaps instead of a big romance Jim will screw up the wedding, and then the office will be uncomfortable and Dwight will do funny stuff
  24. Ok Into the fray. "Houses without enough electrical, phone, or TV outlets." Outside water faucets needs to be added to this list -- Apparently everyone who designed houses pre 1980 had ample supply of 700 ft. garden hoses. People who think they are intellectual because they don't have TV, and then do not understand any references to pop-culture. Brusied Bananas When my wife uses knives to open pickle/jam/jelly jars. Kevin Costner. Toothpaste that gets squeezed only from the middle of the tube Printers that cant pick up only one sheet of address labels. Meth Labs Chiropractors -- We get a piece of mail every now and then from "Dr. Suzy", who seems to know that everyone in our family needs spinal adjustments. Shower Doors -- In a fit of rage I threw mine out this weekend and replaced them with the rod and curtain -- my kids and wife seem to think that pushing outward on the doors opens and closes them. Then they don't stay on their track.Plus they get that film on them and look gross.
