  1. Again...if Prince is jealous and wants to get paid now the option is there for him and realisticly it would probably be in the 6 year $80 million range if I had to guess. I'm not saying the option is there and your numbers are pure speculation. I would guess they offered Prince about the same amount (just my guess) and nothing is happening with Prince per Melvin: GM Doug Melvin just told us that there is no progress in talks with first baseman Prince Fielder, or any other player. "We don't have anything ongoing at this time," said Melvin. http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/05/15/braun-deal-is-worth-45-million.aspx
  2. I do not think Prince will be publicly or privately upset. The option is there for him and the only time he has been upset has been preseason, which is not uncommon for professional athletes......ala Brian Urlacher, Sterling Sharpe, Geoff Jenkins, etc. Once the regular season starts it is all business. This could be true, but even at a business people want to be compensated appropriately. Braun has $45 million guaranteed and Prince has his current deal ($600k or so?). That's a significant difference and if Prince doesn't allow it to get to his emotions more power to him. I personally would be quite upset and maybe not necessarily at the Brewers, but just the situation as a whole. He's getting his and I'm not getting mine. I just have a feeling some of the emotion that gets to Fielder might be fed straight from Boras in terms of let's get out of Milwaukee because it's not fair and you need to get paid.
  3. Dillard's had dominating stretches. From what I gather, he seems to pitch very efficiently - there was a time a couple years back when he racked up a bunch of CGs in the minors. With the kinds of pitch counts that teams hold pitchers to there these days, I think it's a good sign. He's played well so far this year in Nashville. The problem he had last year (and a problem I think many pitchers have had in the minors with the Brewers) is that he didn't have a defined role and was moved from starter to relief pitcher. He knows his role now and that's helped him. Dillard definitely has the character and the confidence to succeed in the bigs and he knows all the current young Brewers pretty well so he should fit in. This could be another time that Steve Bray gets passed up.
  4. Did the presser start already? I'm trying to watch online at school, but it's not working for me if it started Yea it started. I'm watching it right now.
  5. If 8 years, $45 million is correct, thats just over $5.5 million per year. Definitely seems like a good deal. Agreed. I have a feeling (this is just my opinion) that this signifies Fielder will be shown the door sooner rather than later. I don't think Prince would take $90 million over 8 years as long as Boras is around and hopefully Prince handles Braun's contract with class, but I could see him being publicly upset about it.
  6. You can watch the press conference online live over at brewers.com if anyone is interested.
  7. Brewers are calling it an 8 year deal: http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/05/15/brewers-calling-it-an-8-year-deal.aspx
  8. Do you know McClung or something? I've met him a few times when he was in Nashville. The only speculation would be if McClung just says this to say it or if it's true. I think more that he's feeling 100% has some mental aspect behind it too. That kind of surgery and rehab is real tough and I think it's hard to overcome the thought in the back of the mind that it could happen again. I do believe Sarfate struggled with some of that also (he didn't have as serious of surgery though). I by no means think McClung is a great pitcher, but I do believe he could pan out and he's not anywhere close to a financial risk.
  9. I wish they'd have talked to their impending FA ace pitcher before a guy who is a FA in six years (of course they may be talking, but as far as we know they aren't). I'm going to guess the Brewers have had discussions with Sheets or his people. At this point and time I would have to imagine both sides know what the other wants or needs. I have a feeling before the beginning of the year Sheets wanted more than the Brewers were willing to pay at that time and wanted him to prove himself this year (in terms of staying healthy).
  10. Keep in mind that the moderators are fans too, and sometimes we'd rather enjoy the game than moderate the IGT. Makes complete sense. I always thought that the IGT thread rules were a little different than the other threads which makes sense to me. Case in point -- if there's a big or bad play people post a few words and not a complete thought. I've never seen this as a big deal at all. What are the specific complaints about the IGT thread? I see this website very well maintained and it's the main reason I read and post here. It's fine if some think it's too harsh, but it keeps the boards clean and readable.
  11. Because he hasn't done well this year and has never done well before. He's a career 6 ERA pitcher. He has walked 11 batters in 15.2 innings this season. Gagne hasn't done well either, but he's our closer. I've said it numerous times on this site that McClung is finally feeling healthy from his tommy john surgery a few years back, but thoughts like that simply get dismissed. I don't think Riske is that much better than McClung -- Riske's WHIP this year is .2 less than McClung's. Riske has been better in prior years than McClung, but I don't think it makes sense to assume McClung would take over every single inning that Riske would've pitched. If McClung sees a little extra work, I'm fine with that. The real issue is who replaces Riske on the 25 man should he go to the DL. That's far more important than McClung picking up an inning or two per week.
  12. "By giving Braun a seven-year extension beyond this year, the Brewers would buy out Braun's first year of free agency... The new deal is an extension of the $455,000 salary Braun was given for this season back in spring training. I'm guessing it has to be worth around $45 million or so." It seems like it's contradicting itself. The beyond the year suggests it begins after this year, but the extension of the salary sounds like it replaces his existing contract and begins this year. Am I missing something?
  13. Haudricourt is saying the deal includes this year, so it is through 2014. Where are you seeing or hearing that? I'm not doubting you I just want to read it if it's out there. It's still a very good day to be a Brewers fan!
  14. Except when a player hasn't reached arbitration yet. Understood, but these arby numbers are real dollar figures. If Howard got $10 million, I'd imagine Braun would get $12 - $15 million based on his performance and inflation. We'll have to see the details, but I've got to imagine $12 million or so would be his highest salary in a given year and that would come in his free agent year where he could potentially be making $18 - $25 million per year -- remember this is 7 years from now we're talking about. That number could be even higher by then.
  15. There is no reason to put McClung anywhere near important innings. Why? Because he's done alright so far this year? I think you just hate McClung which is fine, but I don't think it's fair to assume all his innings so far this year have been garbage innings. My guess is that if Riske goes on the DL they call up Dillard. They've been getting him ready for that role in Nashville the past few weeks.
  16. That's the thing. He needs to stay healthy for the Brewers to not be burned. That goes with every single contract in baseball. Braun hasn't shown any history of injuries and who knows what he would've cost in arby. We're paying him more than we had to the next few years, but towards the end of that deal when he's in his prime (I can't even imagine how good he'll be) it will be a very good contract for the Brewers. This also sets up the opportunity for Braun to possibly even retire as a Brewer since it appeared he's willing to negotiate with the Brewers.
  17. She first said that way back on the 8th and I commented on it then and no one said boo! I was up in arms as she went over this whole thing where he highlights their names and if he uses them 3 days in a row, they get mandatory two days rest. I think Ned may have been referencing the multiple inning relief pitchers, but I'm not positive. Yost has made it clear that he's going to pitch Gagne consecutive days. Other closers in baseball can do this in my opinion so why not Gagne? I understand he's had the injuries, but we only signed him to a one year deal. I'm more concerned about his production after off days or consecutive days than how often he pitches. He's proven to be inconsistent up to this point and I think it's a moot point until Gagne is considerably a different pitcher given more rest -- I just haven't seen that yet. He has been bad at times both ways.
  18. How big of a start is this for Parra? I hope he does well, but I have a feeling one of the three (Parra/CV/Bush) is going to be moved out of the rotation/demoted. A lot is riding on these next few games in terms of production. I'm thinking Manny has a good game tonight -- 7 innings, 2 ER, and he'll collect a RBI.
  19. I think the deal was good for both teams. Both teams what they wanted whether it was short-term or long-term. ESPN actually has some good analysis of some of the off-season trades and "winners" and "losers" in one of their insider pages. They've deemed this one essentially a fair/push trade.
  20. my savings account pays a whopping .1% ING has a savings account "special" that gets 3% right now and there's no minimums or anything like that. Just throwing the idea out there...
  21. I thought it sounded like an extreme compliment from Wainright. He was saying that even if you throw him a tough pitch, he can still get hits. But if you screw up, gone. It's hard to really know what the meaning was behind his comments...they were probably innocent, but it leaves the question as does Braun only hit bad pitches out of the park? You sometimes hear pitchers say it was a real good pitch, but a better hit. It does come off that Braun only hits bad pitches out, but again it's hard to really determine what he meant by it. I also don't think Braun's "trot" after a home run has anything to do with him not being liked. I would think things like hitting 4 home runs in 2 games are why he's not liked. I've said it before and I'll say it again we all really need to enjoy Braun's time in Milwaukee and appreciate it -- despite how the team does at times. This guy is going to be something very special for a long time.
  22. I cheered for all three of those guys, will continue to do so, and enjoy the updates I get. Agreed. I think some of the reason this topic comes up a lot is because of the draft picks. We really don't know who the winner is until after the picks AND after they are in the system awhile. If this really bothers you, I hate to break it to you, but it might be a few more years...
  23. The thing with humor is that it's in the eye of the beholder. It's the same as "The Office" thread where some dislike an episode while others love it. I personally don't watch too much late night shows on a regular basis, but I do find Ferguson to be funnier than Conan. Ferguson just seems to have this natural honestly funny thing about him in my mind. I thought he was pretty good on Drew Carey back in the day and it appears to me he's just naturally funny and doesn't have to try and come up with too much to be funny. Jimmy Kimmel still is easily my favorite -- does anyone else remember when that show first started a few years back? I believe it was on at 11 PM Central or something like that and eventually got pushed back because of Kimmel's antics. I do remember Snoop getting drunk on one of the first shows taking shots and then ABC told Kimmel he couldn't have liquor bottles on the set...Kimmel then put the liquor in a orange juice carton the next show.
  24. no to the first bit of this. that doesn't make him a great closer, but provides a top notch environment to see if he can handle closer pressure, as opposed to Minute Made or even Miller. This could be the case if it is a mental thing -- or Gagne just flat out can't pitch well anymore. I don't think every time a closer struggles or says he needs a mental break that's the case. It is possible that Gagne just doesn't have it anymore whether that's at Minute Made, Miller, or Fenway.
  25. How could you possibly ever know what's going on with the Brewers from ESPN? I don't think that general idea has anything to do with it. The Marlins and Rays have been getting quite a bit of coverage from ESPN because -- they are winning. I'm sick of the ESPN bashing -- they're a business and they're in business to make money and not cover teams that either aren't in major markets or aren't winning -- right now the Brewers are 0/2. The Brewers did get quite a bit of love last year when they were winning. The point I have with this is that ESPN doesn't cover prospects besides a few top prospects who might get called up, etc. type of articles. Their minor league coverage isn't good and it probably isn't anything they pride themselves on. I just don't get how this guy expects to get any type of prospect evaluation from any network...and I wouldn't knock bf.net about this. The minor league coverage here is great and one of the main reasons I enjoy the site -- MassHass has to be upset! He does great work keeping us all informed and one crazy that is on the radio doesn't change that one bit.
