  1. Or maybe the posters that think those contracts are good or were a good idea should reconsider exactly what the Brewers are buying and what market the team is located in? Some teams can afford 2 or more albatross contracts without it having affect the way they operate, the Brewers can barely afford to miss on a mid level contract without it affecting how they operate. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this contract: Johan Santana lhp 6 years/$137.5M (2008-13), plus 2014 club option -6 years/$137.5M (2008-13), plus 2014 club optionacquired in trade from Minnesota 2/2/08 (Santana waived no-trade clause and agreed to new 6-year deal, replacing final year of previous contract) -08:$19M, 09:$20M, 10:$21M, 11:$22.5M, 12:$24M, 13:$25.5M, 14:$25M club option ($5.5M buyout) -full no-trade clause -$5M deferred annually at 1.25% compound interest (payable June 30 seven years after season in which salary was earned), reducing present-day value of package to $123.1M award bonuses: $0.5M-$1.5M for Cy Young (varies based on number won), $0.25M each for MVP or World Series MVP, $0.1M each for All Star selection, LCS MVP, post-season MVP, post-season All Star, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger -2014 club option becomes player option if Santana: -wins Cy Young award from 2008-13 and finishes second or third in the Cy Young vote in one other season -ranks second or third in Cy Young vote in any 3 seasons, 2008-13 -is on the active roster for the final 30 days of 2013 season, and: -pitches 215 innings in 2013, or -pitches 420 innings in 2012-13, or -pitches 630 innings in 2011-13 -the party holding the 2014 option must exercise it by Nov. 15, 2013 -if 2014 option is Santana’s and he declines it, he receives no buyout -perks: hotel suite on road trips, 15-person suite for 2008 home games -Santana to donate $0.25M annually to Mets charity Could the Brewers have afforded to eat $21 mil for 2011 or $25 mil for 2013? Let alone both years combined? He didn't exactly set the world on fire in 2012 either...
  2. I have nothing to add other than any post which quotes The Sandlot deserves to be quoted in turn! Well maybe I do, I don't want Melvin to make trades simply to make trades, I'm looking for a specific kind of talent in return or I'm not dealing. However, I'm not sure the net was cast wide enough. For example, if you're looking for young impact pitching to build around then you have to be willing to trade pieces that will bring that kind of talent. Looking at the MLB roster the only guy who really fits that bill is Gomez. The better GMs in baseball just don't make quantity deals (unless every player has impact potential), so we'd better be willing to give something to get something. Is Lohse going to command one of BA's top 50 players on his own? I don't think so, so then the target needs to be set lower towards fringy top 100 guys in the low minors with warts that the organization thinks they can work through and fix. I'm fine trading relievers for potential position players, I think that's good value, but pulling any top 20 pitcher for reliever is an incredible steal, it doesn't happen often, especially in this Sabermetric age of baseball. My question would be what exactly is Melvin looking for and whom did he make available and when? The way this situation has worked out to this point it appears that the Brewers believe they will be competitive with better health from their position players next year which I just don't see. I've often said that I believe in just about everyone being available in the right deal as I believe getting what you want is all about timing. The problem from an organizaiton building standpoint is that unless Melvin is completely out of it he's looking to patch the MLB roster instead of build a strong foundation. As such only a handful of players are available and even now when the Brewers are clearly out of the playoff picture there are only 4-5 players available none with enough talent or value to land the next Segura. If Brewer management believes that we'll be competitive in 2014 with Tom Gorzelanny (who already failed as a starter multiple times), Kyle Lohse, Yovani Gallardo (he'll bounce back!), and Wily Peralta next season then I don't think we'll see much in the way of significant MLB pieces being moved. If that's the mindset then they'd have to be counting on better health and bounce back performances to carry the season but the problem as has been pointed out many times is that the organization will still be losing ground in the division. The top 3 teams have more young impact pitching and positional talent to cycle into their MLB rosters while we do nothing but get a year older and more expensive? We're just way too top heavy as an organization, we need a more robust foundation. Obviously I've never bought into the organization's "plan", which to me is more "fly by the seat of our pants" patching holes year to year, anymore than I'm buying that Gorzelanny, Gallardo, and Lohse are first division starters, or Taylor Jungmann and Jed Bradley will be top of the rotation starters for us. Looking at all of the angles I can think of, the only way that this plan works out is with extreme good fortune, and I've never been one to put my eggs in that basket. I'm willing to be patient, as said I'm not into trading a guy just to trade a guy, but at the same time I have a nagging feeling that after this craptastic 2013 MA and DM will turn into buyers again this off-season in an effort to boost attendance. I haven't liked where the organization was at from a talent standpoint for years and I'm firmly against chasing 85 wins given the average age of our "core". Chasing 85 wins made sense in 2006 and 2007, but at the other end of the window is that really a good strategy? There's probably at least 50 different ways the organizaiton can go in the future, but the only roads that really lead anywhere involve reloading a bit which moves the organization as a whole forward. I want to be building towards something, not floating around mediocrity, we've been there and done that for the last 7 years, we know the best case outcome of this management style. If the organization truly wanted to move Lohse and get younger then Kyle needed to be packaged with someone who carries significant value like Gomez. Trading away spare parts (relievers) isn't going to get us where we need to go. There have been some great ideas in this thread about package deals, paying salary, and so on, but how much of that was was truly considered by Brewer management? We'll never know, but from the little bits and pieces of information we get it sure seems like the idea was to just move a few spare parts and wait to be blown away by offers for guys that don't hold all that much trade value. I would call that arbitrarily limiting our possibilities, and I don't like it at all. Then again I've felt for a long time that the roster construction has been fundamentally flawed from the start.
  3. Have you ever watched him pitch? I watched him pitch against the T-Rats and I would trade Lohse straight up for Michael Ynoa or Raul Alcantara and not blink twice. Yes I realize Ynoa's ERA sucks since his promotion to A+, he's obviously not locating well enough yet for the league, but he's only 4 starts in. I would prefer Alcantara given Ynoa's injury history, but in terms of pure stuff Ynoa is right there with the better A ball prospects. 10. Rattlers stun Bees with 5-run ninth Wisconsin wins 6-5 on Cooper's 2-run, walkoff triple By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/6/0/55095160/cuts/CooperMobbed_pomdjbak_rwfkf2my.jpg Garrett Cooper, about to be mobbed by his teammates after his game-winning, two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday. GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had plenty of chances to comeback on Sunday against the Burlington Bees at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. They cashed in their final chance. Wisconsin stunned the Bees with five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pick up a 6-5 victory. Garrett Cooper completed the unlikely comeback with a two-out, two-run triple to drive in the tying and winning runs. The Rattlers (44-56 overall, 15-20 second half) scored in the first inning. Victor Roache drew a walk with two outs. Mike Garza was next and he lined a triple to center for a 1-0 lead. The Bees (39-61, 13-22) took the lead on one swing of the bat in the top of the third inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Austin Ross. Wendell Soto walked with one out. Sherman Johnson hit the next pitch after the walk to the beach beyond the wall in right-center for a two-run home run. Wade Hinkle singled later in the inning to drive in the third run of the frame and Burlington was up 3-1. Burlington tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fifth against reliever Mike Strong. Johnson and Pedro Tiribio started the inning with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners. Tiribio stole second with Exicardo Cayones at the plate, but did not draw a throw, Cayones would single to drive in Johnson and second Tiribio to third. Then, Cayones stole second with Wade Hinkle at the plate. This steal did draw a throw, but the ball wound up in center to allow Tiribio to score for a 5-1 lead. Bees starting pitcher Reid Scoggins gave up the Wisconsin run in the first inning. He allowed consecutive singles to Parker Berberet and Max Walla in the second inning. Scoggins allowed one more base runner in his time on the hill. Scoggins worked five innings, allowed three hits, and left with the 5-1 lead intact. Wisconsin scraped together a rally in the sixth against Burlington reliever Joe Krehbiel. Tyrone Taylor and Victor Roache drew walks. A single by Garrett Cooper with one out loaded the bases. But, Wisconsin stranded all three runners in the sixth. In the seventh against Curt Spomer, Orlando Arcia and Alfredo Rodriguez singled with one out, but the Rattlers did not score. In the eighth, Spomer hit Garza with a pitch to start the inning. Cooper would ground into a double play to kill the rally. Chris O'Grady, the fourth Burlington pitcher of the day, came on in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Rattlers loaded the bases against him. Max Walla started the inning with a single. Tyler Roberts and Arcia each drew walks to load the sacks. The Bees went to Cam Bedrosian after the walk to Arcia. Rodriguez sent a grounder to short that was booted for an error to score Walla and keep the bases loaded. Tyrone Taylor was next and he sent a grounder to short. The Bees got the force at second, but the throw to first was low and wasn't handled. Roberts and Arcia both scored on the play to cut Burlington's lead to 5-4. Roache stepped in as the winning run and fell behind in the count. Taylor took off for second on the 1-2 pitch to Roache. The offering was high for a ball and Taylor was thrown out at second for out number two of the inning. Roache kept the inning alive with a single. Garza followed with another single to reach base as the winning run and set the stage for Cooper. Bedrosian quickly put Cooper down 0-2 with two strikes. Then, Cooper sent a line drive to right. The Bees right fielder came in on the ball only to have the ball sail over his head and roll to the wall. Roache and Garza raced in with the tying and winning runs as Cooper pulled into third base with a game-winning triple. The only other walkoff triple in Timber Rattlers history came on April 22, 2010. Michael Marseco delivered a two-run triple to defeat the Peoria Chiefs on that date. Chris Razo, Milwaukee's 24th round pick in the 2013 draft out of Illinois State, pitched a perfect eighth and a perfect ninth to pick up the win in his Timber Rattlers debut. Game three of the series is Monday night. Ryan Gibbard (4-2, 4.93) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Pat Lowery (3-6, 5.21) is the scheduled starter for the Bees. No matter how improbable – Postgame Post for July 28, 2013 Wisconsin Boxscore Wow, what a comeback! Austin Ross continues his uneven performance, he was always more of control pitcher so it's not surprising he's struggling some as he finds his control again. Chris Razo's secondary numbers aren't eye popping, exactly as many walks as strike outs in just 13 innings, but the small ERA is spectacular. Michael Garza, Garrett Cooper, and Max Walla all posted multi-hit efforts. Wisconsin Recap Wisconsin Gameday A big thank you to Eye Black At Night for covering me last night!

  20. Brevard blasted by Bradenton, 10-2 By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/2/6/54905826/cuts/Richardson_7.26_xxtduibk_vx3715t3.JPG Manatees center fielder D'Vontrey Richardson went 3-for-4 in Brevard County's 10-2 loss to the Bradenton Marauders on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. For Richardson, it was the third straight game in which he recorded two or more hits. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Friday night's post-game fireworks weren't all the explosions that a crowd of 3,195 got to see at Space Coast Stadium, but unfortunately it was the Brevard County Manatees that were blasted in a 10-2 loss to the Bradenton Marauders. Ben McMahan's two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning accounted for Brevard County's (15-17 second half, 52-47 overall) only runs and prevented the 'Tees from being shutout. D'Vontrey Richardson finished with 3-for-4 and has recorded multiple hits in each of his last three games. On the season, he has hit safely in 13 of his 18 games in Brevard County. Southpaw Brent Suter (7-6, 3.14) lasted just five innings as he surrendered career highs in both runs (seven) and hits (12). He walked just one, struck out four and recorded a pickoff in the first inning. The 16 hits for Bradenton (12-22, 38-64) marked the most of the season for the Marauders, as seven hitters recorded two or more hits. The Marauders scored at least one run in seven of the nine innings and they put two runs up in three different frames. Alen Hanson led off the game with a triple and then scored on a Junior Sosa single. In the second inning, Dan Gamache began his big night at the plate with a double and a run. He went 2-for-3 on the night with two RBI, three runs scored and two walks. Two runs came across in the third, when the Marauders sent eight men to the plate. Sosa had the second of his three hits and then scored later in the inning on single from Willy Garcia. In between those batters, Stetson Allie poked his first hit of the night to left and then scored when Elias Diaz grounded a ball to short. The 'Tees tried to get a runner at second, but Gamache slid in safely ahead of the play. Carlos Mesa led off the fourth with a double and then scored two batters later on a single from Sosa. Gamache launched a two-run homer in the fifth and then scored again in the seventh after walking. A fielding error by Mitch Haniger allowed Gamache to score from first and put the batter, Diaz, on third. Diaz scored from there on a sacrifice fly by Alen Hanson. Bradenton starter Joely Rodriguez tossed six scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 2.01 in seven appearances with the Marauders so far this year. He ceded only three runs with four strikeouts. Rodriguez also picked two runners off the base paths. The series between Brevard County and Bradenton will continue on Saturday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
  21. LumberKings rule over Wisconsin Clinton tops Rattlers 3-1 By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Clinton LumberKings defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3-1 on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Tyler Pike allowed three hits over six scoreless innings and the LumberKings scratched out single runs in the fourth, seventh, and eighth to beat Wisconsin. Clinton (49-53 overall, 16-17 second half) scored a run in the top of the fourth without a hit. DJ Peterson walked to start the inning and went to second on a wild pitch. A slow grounder up the third base line got him to third base. Gaby Guerrero drove in Peterson with a ground out to third. Wisconsin (42-56, 13-20) did threaten in the bottom of the sixth. Pike got the first two outs of the inning. But, Mike Garza and Parker Berberet followed with singles. Pike escaped the inning with a strikeout. He ended his six innings with five strikeouts. The LumberKings added a run in the top of the seventh. Tim Lopes doubled to start the inning. A single by Ketel Marte drove in Lopes for a 2-0 lead. Lopes added a run scoring fielder's choice in the top of the eighth to drive in Gaby Guerrero for a 3-0 lead. Tyler Roberts doubled to start the Wisconsin ninth inning against Oliver Garcia. None of the three Clinton pitchers had a 1-2-3 inning in the game, but Roberts was the first Rattlers batter to leadoff an inning by getting on base. Roberts was still at second base with two outs. Then, Chris McFarland singled to right to knock in Roberts to help Wisconsin avoid the shutout and bring the tying run to the plate. Tyrone Taylor hit it hard, but right at the centerfielder to end the game. The loss knocked the Timber Rattlers to a season low of fourteen games under .500. The Timber Rattlers begin a three game series with the Burlington Bees on Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Jorge Lopez (4-6, 5.54) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Burlington sends Nic DellaTorre (0-3, 6.30) to the mound. Game time is 6:35pm. Saturday night is the Super Ropes Candy Bonanza at the ballpark. What is the Super Ropes Candy Bonanza? You'll have to attend to find out, but as a tease, there are candy surprises during the game. Plus, the Super Ropes Beach in right-center features a Sand Castle Building Contest with the winner receiving a one-year supply of Super Ropes! Also, Fly Away Saturday means one lucky fan will win airfare for two from Funjet Vacations and Fox World Travel at this game. The evening wraps up when FOX 11 presents a postgame fireworks display! 22. Final: Bradenton (Pirates) 10, BC 2 Game Summary from the Pirate's perspective. Marauders Roll Past Manatees 10-2 Season-high 16 hits back Rodriguez's six scoreless frames By Nate March / Bradenton Marauders Melbourne, Fla. - The Marauders (12-22) piled up 10 runs on a season high 16 hits in a 10-2 win over the Brevard County Manatees (15-17) on Friday Night at Space Coast Stadium. Eight different Marauders hit safely and six Bradenton batters had at least one RBI. The Marauders offensive onslaught was carried out primarily against Manatees' ace Brent Suter (L, 7-6). Alen Hanson tripled leading off the game and scored immediately on a single by Junior Sosa. Sosa had three hits and two RBI against the lefty pitcher after beginning the game with just two hits against left-handed pitchers this season. Bradenton scored in each of Suter's five innings. Suter surrendered 12 of Bradenton's hits. Dan Gamache hit his 27th double and third home run off the starter, and scored three runs total in the game. Joely Rodriguez (W, 2-3) pitched six scoreless innings for a second straight start. Rodriguez struck out four and did not walk a batter. He picked off two of the three batters that hit safely against him. Rodriguez has won consecutive decisions after starting 0-3 with the Marauders. Orlando Castro returned from the disabled list with a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. Castro struck out two in his perfect inning. Brevard County broke up the shutout against Zac Fuesser in the eighth. With the Marauders leading 10-0, Ben McMahan hit a two-run homer for the Manatees. Fuesser pitched a perfect ninth. Game three of the series will be played Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Zack Dodson will be on the mound seeking his third straight win for Bradenton. The game will be broadcast online at http://www.BradentonMarauders.com. Brevard County Boxscore While the Manatees managed just 6 hits D'Vo had a heck of a game going 3-4 (all singles). The only other offensive contributors were Ben McMahan with his HR and Brandon Macias with a double. Brevard County Recap A horribly quiet game log from the BC perspective. Bradenton didn't have any big innings, but scored 1 or 2 runs in every inning but the 6th and 9th.
  23. Nicky mentioned the anticipation of meeting his new teammates per a tweet earlier this afternoon. On a personal note, I am leaving town this afternoon for a race tomorrow morning, so if anybody would be willing to cover Brevard County tonight I would be grateful. I got you covered and reminder that tomorrow is the last day I will need coverage for as well.
  24. "Very useful" sure, "Ace" never in his career. I really liked Gallardo as a pitcher coming through the minors and as a pitcher for the Brewers, but he never took that next step up. His innings per start never increased, in fact the opposite is happening and he never had a big enough arm to be an ace but now his velocity is declining at an alarming rate for his age as well. I don't see the WBC as any kind of logical explanation for his velocity loss. Sustained velocity loss is something mechanical, something physical, or an injury. Yo has always nibbled too much, which pumps up his pitch count and limits his over-all effectiveness. He could certainly attempt to refocus himself as a control pitcher, but he's never had pinpoint control in his career. The best hope I see for him is that maybe he'll get a new off-season conditioning program and come back with greater velocity next season.
  25. With the rain delayed start I only made it through the 5th before I fell asleep last night. Clinton defeats Rattlers 5-1 LumberKings get 14 hits to quiet Wisconsin By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattler GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Clinton LumberKings attacked the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with 14 hits and cruised to a 5-1 win behind eight solid innings from Scott DeCecco on Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Clinton (48-53 overall, 15-17 second half) grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning. Alfredo Morales doubled with one out. Dario Pizzano singled to left and the LumberKings had runners on the corners. A chopper to third off the bat of DJ Peterson was mishandled for an error to allow Morales to score. Wisconsin (42-55, 13-19) answered in the bottom of the first. Alfredo Rodriguez walked to start the inning. Michael Reed followed with a double to left-center and Rodriguez scored easily to tie the game 1-1. Rattlers starting pitcher Eric Semmelhack got the first two outs in the top of the fourth inning. But, Martin Peguero got a seeing-eye single through the middle to keep the inning alive for the LumberKings. Ketel Marte followed with a double to the gap in right-center and Peguero raced home to put Clinton ahead. Alfredo Morales followed with a single to center to drive in Marte and Clinton was up 3-1. The LumberKings used the longball to build their lead in the top of the fifth inning. DJ Peterson hit a home run to left-center to start the frame. Jordy Lara cracked a solo home run to left with two outs and Clinton was up 5-1. That was it for the scoring. DeCecco tossed seven innings, allowed five hits, walked three, and struck out four. DeCecco earned his eighth win of the season with the victory on Thursday. Rodolfo Fernandez came out of the Wisconsin bullpen and tossed three scoreless frames. Taylor Wall worked a scoreless ninth in relief of Fernandez. Mike Garza doubled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off Jochi Ogando. Parker Berberet followed with a walk, but Ogando closed out the game with a strikeout. The final game of the series is Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Tyler Wagner (8-7, 3.61) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton has Tyler Pike (6-3, 2.27) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 7:05pm. The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a Fang "Bobble-TAIL" figure from U.S. Cellular. There will also be plenty of interactive and social media activities throughout the evening with the Rattlers and US Cellular hosting You Run the Show Night. Garrett Cooper hasn't appeared since leaving the July 21st game with an apparent injury. Chris said it wasn't major a couple of days later but I haven't heard anything since. Taylor Wall had back to back outings on July 7th and 12th where he gave up runs, otherwise he's been stellar lately.
