  1. I posted the rough range calculation for UZR in the statistical analysis forum, but UZR actually gives positive credit in the range calculation for errors because the fielder got to the ball(regardless of converting an out), and deducts the errors in the fielding portion when it figures the average plays made in each zone. The infomration is somewhat old... 2003 or 2004 I think... so the calculations may have been updated since, but I don't think the methodology would significantly change.
  2. Sure you can treat every missed scoop opportunity equally, that's not really the point that X or I is trying to make. The way Prince flails, sometimes turns his head to the side, and sets up for the ball he doesn't even give himself a chance, he's lucky to even get a glove on the ball. So while a certain percentage will be missed by every 1B, I'd rather have some chance to make a play than no chance. There's the little things like leaving the bag to keep the ball in front of him so runners don't advance on the poor throw that's he's never done consistently. Many of the extra bases on errors are actually Prince's responsibility, but there's simply no way to account for that in scoring, the error goes to the fielder, and there's no calculation for extra bases it cost the team. Prince makes every fielder in the infield worse, he's that bad, and no metric is going to measure it properly at this point in time regardless what you may think.
  3. only because defensive metrics, whichever you choose, do not take scoops into effect at all. A 5 gallon pail laying on it's side would scoop more balls. I'm not going to defend Gamel's defense but even casual observation should lead one to the conclusion that he's better than Braun was. Somehow totalzone had him at 2 runs below average last year, obviously it's horribly flawed for MiLB players, but as you've said in the past any metric is better than nothing. Gamel's fielding percentage was also better than Braun's so I'm not sure "historically bad" is an accurate assessment of his play. He's bad, probably in the bottom 2 in the league defensively at this point in time, the one thing he really has going for himself is his range, there's hope there. I've always been of the opinion that the way metrics like UZR are calculated they measure defensive potential rather than the actual defensive result. Gamel would score very well on the range side because he gets to a ton of balls even though he doesn't convert them for outs, he'd score poorly on the error side because he throws like garbage. Kinda like Hall's career numbers defensively where his range covers up everything else he does... tons of adjustment for range would make Gamel a poor 3B, but not historically bad.
  4. Your post is very difficult to read. I haven't been up in there in a couple of years but in the past season tickets came with club pass for each game as well which is how we got in. We didn't make reservations or anything just walked up. I always preferred the patio, we'd get there early and get a table closest to the field, there was no time limit like there is in Friday's. Everything is expensive up there though, we typically would only stay through the 3rd inning then move down to the regular seats.
  5. How do we know a longer term solution wasn't available? Because it wasn't reported in the press? The rentals are obvious, everyone knows who they are. We didn't know that Cain had been available till after the fact... what team besides the Giants would want to let it leak out that they were shopping a guy to see what they could get? It only happens with the cancer type players in most cases and ends up hurting their trade value. It's just not good diplomacy to name drop in the press, it's bad news for the player and the team. What player wants to be told they are expendable?
  6. The part about this whole thing that really bothers me is that this issue should have been 1 and done, meaning it completed healed itself over the winter. The longer this goes, the worse I feel about it because it's becomes more likely he'll just continually aggravate it, maybe risking something permanent. This injury is new to me so I'm not familiar with diagnosis or treatment, it's just unsettling the injury didn't heal properly all off season and that we're approaching a year since the initial injury and it's still an issue. If Braun is thinking about the injury at the plate then it will have an effect, but I doubt he'd ever admit that to the media where we'd hear about it anyway.
  7. If Gamel is on the bench they've given up on him at 3B.
  8. That's disappointing... I was hoping 89-92.
  9. Other than he was a rule 5 MiLB draft player after only 3 years and his stats that are freely available anywhere, I know nothing about him. He's still really young and has only played in short season ball. I'm as clueless about him as I am about Miranda.
  10. Yesterday was the first day I believe. edit. Yep it was
  11. Frederickson is an enigma... today he's without a walk, last outing he was the same way till his blow up inning when he walked everyone and threw a bunch of balls off the backstop. It's got to be mental with him the way he falls apart so quick, but when he keeps it together he puts up an awfully nice line. Nieves certainly didn't pitch well though. Sanchez and Lawrie with absolute monster days at the plate, Vass and BK (I'm tired of trying to spell Brock Kjeldgaard) with nice days as well. BC keeps rolling, nice start by Anundsen, they win on only 4 hits, Wooten finally got a day off. The pitching has been pretty amazing so far, who would have thought coming into the season Luetge would be the worst pitcher statistically at this point in the season?
  12. I really wish Fielder would take the force out when he's only 3 steps from the bag instead of waiting to tag someone.
  13. Some reports have his fastball topping out in the low 90s, others in the high 80s, tough to say until he gets to AA where we actually have some decent media coverage.
  14. The lack of audio at BC is going to really piss me off at some point, probably next season when all the young pitchers are there. Put a college intern on the radio for cripes sake, give us something. edit, Anundsen's hitless streak ends at 12+, good work young man.
  15. Well it's sort of a slippery slope... would we get scrubs, or the classic choke? There's an element of class that's missing when the league gets involved, those other tee shirts have long been the domain of entrepreneurs... I remember when Alvarez came to the Badgers and suddenly the creative tee-shirt vendors were no longer to be found anywhere near the stadium. I'm really not sure that MLB should be involved in taunting either way.
  16. The information isn't new, it was just in the minor league forum which doesn't get nearly the run the major league forum does for obvious reasons. I quoted exactly what Rogers wrote, and he put quotes around it. Treated like a piece of property? Because he was traded? That's a pretty cynical view of life, and generally the clubhouse guys have the best relationships with the players, they work day to day with each other and have a measure of trust. I mostly familiar with the NFL, but dhonks might weight in as he's actually been in the clubhouse Ignore the first hand reports and Buck Rogers if you wish, the evidence is right there in front of you for objective analysis. I'm not going to try to convince anyone because people are going to believe what they want to believe, moon landings or otherwise, it's all pretty much the same.
  17. He'll stay in A+ till the break at the very least. The AA club is full of minor league vets this season.
  18. I wonder if that AB where he K'd corkscrewing himself into the ground on Friday night hurt him? My initial reaction was "that had to hurt" and as far as not doing anything different... well that's just dumb and I'll leave it at that.
  19. LaPorta literally said, "What's in it for me?". How long does it take to sign 2 jerseys for charity? It's more than just the 2 jerseys, there was plenty of anecdotal evidence that Matt was a dbag... maybe his religious blog posts fooled some people but he didn't practice what he preached. As far as the trade, I truly believe that some around here haven't gotten their minds around the concept and believe those of us that didn't like the trade are into hording prospects, and just don't accept the long term value argument at all. CC wasn't the only way we could have gotten into the playoffs last year, I don't feel it's fair to make that claim. Sheets getting hurt was inevitable, that's what he does, he's been injury prone despite what some people will claim about him... phxMILWfan said it best, "it was worth it to me". It's a matter of personal opinion, I don't see how there's right and wrong, just different takes on value, on what's important to each of us. Some got the most personal value from a playoff appearance, others would have preferred more tangible valuable in a long term rotation solution. There were plenty of teams that were tanking by July that had players on their teams that would have fit the bill and some would have gotten hurt making the trade look horrible, some would have stayed healthy. There were plenty of options and there's always more than one way to get home. Again the CC trade was 1 game in a 162 game season from being a clunker, we were on the outside looking in going into that last week, without a playoff appearance the trade wouldn't have stood up to historical review very well. I would have felt better about the trade if Yo had been healthy, but if that had been the case would Melvin have even pulled the trigger? I posted repeatedly about my fear that Sheets would go down with an injury leaving us with just Sabathia or Halladay (depending on which thread a move was being discussed), it was very predictable. It's all water under the bridge now, I'm not sorry LaPorta is gone, and my focus still remains the talent at the top of the rotation.
  20. Maybe, there's no way he threw 50 pitches in the inning. We're in the dark though, no audio for this series so we have nothing but the box score.
  21. Well boo, Rogers only pitched 1 inning, retired the side in order with a K. edit. Thanks Mass, I figured the percentage was pretty bad overall, and it is.
  22. I believe it was Huntsville GM Buck Rogers that made his dislike of LaPorta public citing numerous examples from pictures to jerseys that Matt wouldn't sign, for a variety events. edit. I overstated it a bit, it was just jerseys, from Buck's top 10 list this offseason.
  23. Using FF 3, how do you update the font? The window comes up a tad messed up and there's no OK button to select the font, like there is with the size? Editing the HTML gets way too messy for me personally.
  24. Copying the template is easy enough, but keeping the links updated will take crazy time. Would it be possible to build an in game thread generator into the new website?
