For people who read the MiLB forum this will be extremely repetitive as I harp on these points all the time. Baseball created it's own drug culture as there are too many games, too little rest, and in the past incredibly poor nutrition coming through the minors. It's no wonder players were looking for a pick-me-up and turned to too greenies or other forms of stimulation to "get up" for games. In addition baseball has never been interested in developing athletes, it's always been a trial by fire, get by with your god given gifts type of atmosphere because the schedule doesn't lend itself to player development, there's no/very little practice/development time. That's why there is so much of talk of players needing to be a certain height for a position, or big too tall for a position, and so on. I don't believe any of that is true... if you took NBA basketball players and NFL wide receivers they'd be able to play SS being 6' 4" or taller because they are great athletes who possess outstanding core strength and flexibility. Baseball is unique in that there are bursts of quick motor activity around long periods of inactivity which lends itself to muscle strains and pulls. Baseball is also one of the few sports where every activity requires extreme end range motion from fielding, to throwing, to swinging a bat so it's much harder to produce while playing injured. In other sports the idea is always to minimize end range motion as much as possible, in football for example nearly every technique is taught around being square to your opponent which keeps activity in your power zones. Strength and flexibility go hand in hand and every team does a modern warm-up dynamic stretching routines, you can see them if you get to the park soon enough. The problem is that stuff happens a half an hour or more before the game and there is a ton of downtime during the game where there is the opportunity to get "cold" and I don't think anyone would legitimately claim that MLB players are the most well conditioned athletes on the planet to begin with. It would seem to me that some pretty simple changes in habits, especially with modern clubhouses, could significantly reduce the number of strains/pulls around baseball. How tough would it be to take a couple of minutes every other inning to quickly warm your body back up? It's somewhat ironic that everyone warms up their arm before taking the field but every other muscle group is ignored, most infielders don't bother to squat and field a ball properly in that time, they just bend at the waist and throw ball back across the diamond. The OFs just stand in one spot and play catch... Injuries are a part of sport but baseball has lagged far behind the other major sports in terms of injury prevention and treatment. Baseball people won't even agree that there is a proper way to throw a baseball... it's a sport with extremely unique concerns and yet change comes at a snail's pace because there is way things have been done for nearly a hundred years and it "works", so why change it? PEDs to me are like the "wonder diet pill" that so many people seem to want. Why put in the effort to make good choices and exercise when someone should just make a pill that allows to me to do whatever I want and still be healthy? It's a short cut that allowed/still allows for players with poor habits to bounce back more quickly than they otherwise should, star players or not. I'm not a big on supplements, never have been and likely never will be. I believe in eating properly and working hard to achieve results... if it takes me 4 years doing it naturally to get where I want to be instead of 1.5 with some assistance I'm okay with that...

Sounds Lulled By Z's; Lose 4-0 Nashville's Ariel Pena Goes Seven Innings In Loss Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/4/4/86792644/cuts/MPS_8555_Large_j0nlc6j3_k3bpmbmk.jpg (MIKE STRASINGER ) METAIRIE, La. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (62-55) were held without a run Monday night at Zephyr Field in their 4-0 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs. It marks the team's sixth shutout loss of the season. The Zephyrs took the lead early on, scoring a run in the bottom of the 1st inning courtesy of Justin Bour's low liner into right field that brought in Austin Wates from third base. Zephyrs right fielder Brian Bogusevic increased New Orleans' lead to two with his RBI double in the 4th inning, which followed Bour's leadoff double. In the 6th inning, the Z's made it a 4-0 lead over Nashville with a Ed Lucas sacrifice fly and Zack Cox's RBI single. Sounds starting pitcher Ariel Pena (8-7) allowed all four Zephyrs runs during his seven innings of work from the hill to pick up his seventh loss of the season. The right-hander surrendered seven hits and issued three walks, but also fired seven strikeouts. Reliever Kyle Heckathorn stepped in to deliver a spotless 8th inning, fanning one Zephyr. Offensively, three Sounds batters turned in two-hit nights to account for the team's six hits on the night: Logan Schafer, Irving Falu, and Hector Gomez. New Orleans starter Brad Penny (2-2) worked six scoreless frames, limiting the Sounds to three hits, for his second win on the year. The Sounds will look to level the series with New Orleans on Tuesday night by sending RHP Donovan Hand (1-6, 4.66) to the hill opposite the Zephyrs' LHP Elih Villanueva (9-7, 3.73). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Nashville Boxscore Ariel Pena came by his 4 runs honestly but did a nice job to limit New Orleans to a single tally in the 4th. Nashville Recap Pena got back to back strike outs with 2 runners on to get out of the 4th. New Orleans Bottom of the 4th Justin Bour doubles (23) on a sharp line drive to right fielder Jeremy Hermida. Brian Bogusevic doubles (8) on a sharp line drive to left fielder Eugenio Velez. Justin Bour scores. Rob Brantly pops out to third baseman Irving Falu. Ed Lucas walks. Zack Cox strikes out swinging. Brad Penny strikes out swinging. Nashville Gameday

Rattlers win a close one in Cedar Rapids to open road trip Ratterree's 9th inning sacrifice fly gives Wisconsin a 4-3 win By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers kicked off their seven-game road trip with a 4-3 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday night at Perfect Game Field. Michael Ratterree drove in a pair of runs, including the eventual game-winner in the top of the ninth inning. Chris McFarland singled in the top of the fourth inning to start the inning for Wisconsin. Ratterree drew a walk and - one out later - Omar Garcia drew a walk to load the bases. Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Lewis Thorpe threw a wild pitch with David Denson at the plate to allow McFarland to score. An error on a grounder off the bat of Rafael Neda allowed Ratterree to score for a 2-0 lead. The Kernels (59-60 overall, 25-18 second half) also scored two runs in their half of the fourth inning. Wisconsin starter Zach Quintana got the first out, but walked Chad Christensen and hit Mitch Garver to put two runners on base. Alex Swim singled up the middle to drive in Christensen. Quintana hit Max Murphy to load the bases, but struck out the next batter for the second out. Quintana had two strikes out Engelb Vielma, but threw a wild pitch to allow Garver to score the tying run. McFarland started another Rattlers rally in the fifth inning. He singled with two outs and went to second on an errant pickoff throw. Ratterree delivered McFarland home with a single to center to give Wisconsin (60-51, 24-18) a 3-2 lead. Cedar Rapids tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Christensen lined a home run to left against reliever Luke Curtis to lead off the sixth and the game was tied 3-3. The Rattlers went back in front in the top of the ninth inning. Johnny Davis singled and Angel Ortega doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs against Kernels reliever Dallas Gallant. After getting a strikeout, Gallant walked McFarland intentionally to load the bases. Ratterree lifted a flyball to right that was deep enough for Davis to score the go ahead run. Wisconsin reliever Tristan Archer, who came on in the eighth inning, pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the Kernels. Archer picked up the win, his fifth of the season, with two scoreless innings. Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night. Barrett Astin (7-5, 4.74) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Ricky Nolasco will start for the Kernels on a Major League rehabilitation assignment for the Minnesota Twins. Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. HOME RUN: CR: Chad Christensen (8th, 0 on in 6th inning off Luke Curtis) WP: Tristan Archer (5-5) LP: Dallas Gallant (1-1) TIME: 3:13 ATTN: 1,902 Wisconsin Boxscore Both Nolasco and Mauer are starting against the T-Rats tomorrow night on rehab assignments so the Rattlers will have a bit of a steep hill to climb. Mehring was quite kind to Zach Quintana when discussing his self induced issues in the 4th. He was up 0-2 to Thompson and threw essentially the same pitch 3 straight times, called a ball all 3 times, to walk him. I can understand disagreeing and coming back a 2nd time but doing it a 3rd time is just... well... it's dumb. All you're going to do is piss off the umpire and make sure you don't get that call again. Zach came a bit unhinged after that and had trouble finding the zone the rest of the inning. It's too bad as he was pitching very well until the 4th and every time I think he's taken a step forward he does something like the 4th inning which grates on me. He's better of late and was trending to finish the season on a high note, but other than flashing a plus breaking ball a couple of TV outings ago I haven't seen him to do much to be excited about. Quintana ended up going 4 innings, allowing just 1 hit, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 2 hit batters, and 1 costly wild pitch against 3 strike outs. Chris McFarland (2-3,BB) and Angel Ortega (2-4,2B) had the only multi-hit games for a club that only collected 6 hits against 13 strike outs in the contest. Rattler batters did walk 7 times... so that's a plus, but they haven't been hitting since their 5 run outburst in the 2nd inning on Friday. Wisconsin Recap

I'm not sorry Francisco is gone at all, I didn't want him retained just because he hits for power anymore than I thought Reynolds was the answer because he does the same. Just about everything Francisco does as a player other than hit home runs really gets under my skin. I'm stickler for fundamentals and when I see guys like him and Yuni B who lazy their way through professional baseball it infuriates me.

Sounds Fall To Zephyrs In 12 Innings, 4-3 Fiers Dominant Again In No-Decision For Nashville Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/6/4/73876264/cuts/_MPS0615_t0wi1atc_b76j0j9g.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds suffered a 4-3, 12-inning loss against the New Orleans Zephyrs on Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field. With the loss, the first-place Sounds (62-54) fell to 1-4 in extra-inning games and saw their division lead reduced to 1 1/2 games. Nashville, which failed to protect 1-0 and 3-1 advantages on the day, has held a lead in 20 of its 33 road losses this season. In the decisive bottom of the twelth, Sounds reliever Jose De La Torre, in his third inning of work for Nashville, faced a one-out, bases-loaded jam. After Rob Brantly ripped a double into the right field corner, skipper Rick Sweet ordered the next two batters to be walked intentionally to fill the bags and create a forceout at any base. Mark Canha lifted a fly ball down the left field line, which was caught in foul territory by Logan Schafer. However, Schafer stumbled in the bullpen and his rushed throw was offline as Brantly raced home to score the game-winning run. The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Shortstop Hector Gomez legged out a one-out triple to right off Z's starter Alex Sanabia and scored on Matt Pagnozzi's dribbler up the first base line. New Orleans shortstop Juan Diaz knotted the contest at 1-1 in the home half of the fifth when he belted a solo homer to right off Mike Fiers that narrowly cleared the wall. The blast was the infielder's 11th of the year and only the third longball surrendered by Nashville pitching in the past 124 innings. Fiers, who took a no-decision, worked his 11th quality start in 17 trips to the hill for Nashville this season. The right-hander held the Z's to one run on five hits while striking out seven batters and walking none in his six frames of action, lowering his ERA to 2.55 with the effort. Nashville reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth when Schafer, playing his first game with Nashville since being optioned from Milwaukee, greeted Zephyrs reliever Chaz Roe with a leadoff triple to right that nearly left the ballpark. Later in the frame, Jason Rogers plated Schafer with a ground-rule double to right-center then scored himself when Matt Clark followed with an RBI single to right that gave the Sounds a 3-1 advantage. Rogers (2-for-5), who plated the go-ahead run for Nashville, has been swinging a hot stick of late, batting .329 (27-for-82) over his last 21 games and driving in a run in 12 of his last 19 contests. New Orleans threatened in the bottom of the eighth. After Brent Leach retired the first batter of the frame, Arcenio Leon was summoned from the bullpen and promptly walked the bases loaded to leave a jam for Alfredo Figaro. Justin Bour made the Sounds pay as he greeted the right-hander with a two-run, game-tying single to center that made it a 3-3 contest. Figaro escaped further damage by striking out Kyle Jensen and Josh Rodriguez to leave the potential go-ahead run standing at third base. The Sounds missed a great chance to reclaim the lead in the top of the eleventh after loading the bases with only one out against Arquimedes Caminero. However, the Zephyrs right-hander recovered to pop up Kevin Mattison then struck out Schafer to escape the jam. The teams continue the series with a 7:00 p.m. meeting on Monday evening. Right-hander Ariel Pena (8-6, 4.36), who has won four of his last five starts, will man the bump for the Sounds to face former major leaguer Brad Penny (1-2, 4.91). Nashville Boxscore Well this one stinks, 2 walk off losses so far for the affiliates this evening. What more can be said about Mike Fiers in the minor leagues than has already been said? Tough to come by in the AZL, there are some national guys that occasionally post observations from the AZL and AFL which will be our best bet until BA updates their prospect rankings. MTBrew passes along quite a bit of information from Helena as well, but we'll have to wait until next season for that.

Rattlers and Chiefs suspended with game tied 1-1 after nine innings Rain halts play just before start of tenth By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/2/6/87831926/cuts/Javier_Salas_August_3_b6cdczg4_sjysiqjc.jpg Javier Salas allowed one run on four hits over five innings on Sunday in his Timber Rattlers debut. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) GRAND CHUTE, WI - Sunday's game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Peoria Chiefs was suspended with the score tied 1-1 after nine innings. The game will be picked up in the top of the tenth inning on Thursday when the Timber Rattlers begin a series against the Chiefs at Dozer Park in Peoria. Peoria (59-51 overall, 22-19 second half) got their first hit of the game with a two-out single by Justin Ringo in the fourth inning. Ronald Castillo followed with an infield single and Rattlers starter Javier Salas hit Rowan Wick to load the bases. Salas jammed Cesar Valera, who hit a slow dribbler to short. Valera just beat the throw for an infield single to score Ringo for a 1-0 lead. That was the only run allowed by Salas, who was making his Midwest League debut in the start. The tenth round pick of the Brewers from the University of Miami in the 2014 draft allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out four. The Rattlers (59-51, 23-18) put together their own two-out rally in the sixth inning. Taylor Brennan reached on an error and Clint Coulter followed with a single to put runners on the corners. David Denson was next and he singled to left to drive in Brennan with the tying run. Peoria starting pitcher Arturo Reyes struck out ten Rattlers over seven innings, but ran into trouble in the eighth. Johnny Davis singled to start the inning and Omar Garcia bunted Davis into scoring position and that was all for Reyes. Kyle Barraclough took over on the mound for the Chiefs and got out of the inning when Davis was thrown out trying to steal third and Brennan struck out. Neither team could score in the ninth before an intense downpour caused play to be stopped. The decision to suspend the game was made 45 minutes later as the rain continued to fall. The game will be picked up on Thursday in the top of the tenth inning with Peoria at the plate and the score tied 1-1. The time of the restart on Thursday is to be determined and should be announced on Monday. Speaking of Monday, the Timber Rattlers begin a road trip on tomorrow night with a game against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field. Zach Quintana (3-5, 5.61) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The Kernels plan to send Lewis Thorpe (2-2, 4.74) to the mound. Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Wisconsin Partial Boxscore The rain storm which stopped the T-Rats first hit the game I was watching NW of Appleton and it was surreal to watch a wall of white envelope the tree line and come at me. The field I was at sustained some damage, the shed which houses the equipment was blown over and part of the wall ended up clear across the field by the 3rd base dugout. Javier Salas had a nice debut described above. Back in June before the all-star break I made this post asking for Taylor Williams to ascend in the second half, my has he ever. In that same spirit I'm now asking for Chris McFarland, Clint Coulter, and David Denson to all finish the season on a high note and push hard towards BC for 2015. Oh, and for the record when I mention a player ascending that means I think there's still more in that player's tank. For example I think Coulter's true hitting ability lies between his April and then rest of his other 3 months which were incredibly consistent. He hasn't gone on an extended streak of squaring up pitches in some time, but he's got the talent. I don't believe he's a .250ish hitter: [pre]Split G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS TB HBP April 22 92 74 11 24 7 1 4 17 2 0 15 12 .324 .457 .608 1.065 45 3 May 28 122 98 21 25 3 1 6 22 1 2 17 25 .255 .393 .490 .883 48 6 June 22 91 70 18 17 8 0 3 13 1 0 15 20 .243 .396 .486 .881 34 4 July 24 95 75 13 19 5 0 4 16 1 2 14 20 .253 .400 .480 .880 36 5[/pre] Wisconsin Partial Recap

Blazek Pitches, Hits Sounds To 4-2 Win In New Orleans First-Place Sounds Take Series Opener Against Division-Rival Z's Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/9/4/87678894/cuts/Blazek_Red_y1eewh5h_twxe4iod.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) METAIRIE, La. - Pitcher Michael Blazek tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings and accounted for three of Nashville's four runs scored in the Sounds' 4-2 victory over New Orleans on Saturday evening at Zephyr Field in the opener of a four-game series. With the victory, the Sounds (62-53) maintained their two-game lead in the PCL American Conference Southern Division. Blazek (2-4) pick up his second win of the year with his solid outing. The right-hander has been outstanding in his last four starts for the Sounds, posting a 0.92 ERA (2er/19.2ip) over that stretch. Blazek helped his own cause in the top of the fifth inning when the hurler led off with a double to right-center and later scored the night's first run on a wild pitch from Zephyrs starter Anthony DeSclafani (2-3) to give the Sounds a 1-0 lead. Blazek (2-for-3) continued to get it done with the lumber in the sixth, upping the Nashville advantage to 3-0 with a two-out, two-run single to right off Z's reliever Bryan Evans. Sean Halton (2-for-4) got things started in the frame with a leadoff doubled off the center field wall. With two down, New Orleans elected to intentionally walk Kevin Mattison, who was hitless in his last 17 at-bats, to face Blazek, and the hurler made them pay for that decision with his two-run knock. On the play, Mattison hustled around the bases to score from first. Nashville tacked on another run in the seventh against Casey McCarthy. Jason Rogers (2-for-4) smacked a one-out double into the left field corner then scored on a Halton bloop single to shallow left-center that dropped among three Zephyrs defenders to make it a 4-0 contest. The Zephyrs broke up the shutout bid in the home half of the seventh with a pair of runs off Sounds reliever Dustin Molleken. The speedy Austin Wates led off with an infield single before scoring two batters later on Mark Canha's run-scoring double into the right field corner. Justin Bour followed with a first-pitch RBI single to left that halved the Nashville lead to 4-2. Brent Leach (1.1 IP) and Rob Wooten closed out the victory with scoreless relief outings for Nashville; Wooten nailed down his ninth save of the year. Eugenio Velez, who entered the game in the seventh inning as part of a double switch, flew out in his lone plate appearance to snap his season-best hitting streak at eight games for the Sounds. The teams continue the series with a 4:00 p.m. contest on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Mike Fiers (8-5, 2.62) will toe the slab for the Sounds to face New Orleans right-hander Alex Sanabia (5-4, 4.80). Nashville Boxscore Michael Blazek says, "DH this!", I sure do love it when pitchers can hit a little bit. Blazek worked around 7 hits and 3 walks in his eventful 5.2 innings to put up a scoreless night. Nashville Recap Nashville Gameday

Chiefs stop Rattlers win streak Peoria beats Wisconsin 9-3 By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/7/2/87725272/cuts/August_2_Angel_Ortega_wjtroybm_rndcapwm.jpg Angel Ortega drives in a pair of runs for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with a single in the bottom of the sixth inning on Saturday night. GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Peoria Chiefs defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-3 on Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to snap Wisconsin's four-game winning streak. All nine of Peoria's runs scored with two outs. Wisconsin (59-51 overall, 23-18 second half) scored first. Taylor Brennan drew a walk to start the bottom of the first inning and Chris McFarland followed with a single off Peoria starter Rob Kaminsky. Michael Ratterree was next and he grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that got Brennan to third base. Clint Coulter singled to drive in Brennan for a 1-0 lead. Peoria (59-51, 22-19) had a runner at third with two outs in the top of the third inning when Rattlers starting pitcher Preston Gainey walked Carson Kelly. Rowan Wick has next and he hit a three-run homer to right-center to give the Chiefs the lead. In the fourth, Gainey retired the first two batters, but a walk to Vaughn Bryan and a wild pitch kept the inning alive. CJ McElroy Jr. hit a slow roller to first and he just beat the flip to the bag. Bryan never slowed around third base and scored ahead of the throw to the plate. The Chiefs added a run against reliever Harvey Martin in the fifth. A walk and a hit batsman to start the inning were followed by a pair of strikeouts, but Ronald Castillo singled up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to drive in a run for a 5-1 lead. Kaminsky ran into trouble against the Rattlers in the bottom of the sixth. Ratterree walked and Coulter singled to put two runners on base. Kaminsky got the first out with a strikeout before turning the game over to the bullpen. Reliever Jhonny Polanco entered the game and walked Omar Garcia to load the bases. Polanco got the second out of the inning without a run scoring. Then, Angel Ortega battled a ten-pitch at bat as he fouled off five different two-strike pitches before lining a single to left that drove in Ratterree and Coulter to cut the Peoria lead to 5-3. Martin had two one with two out in the top of the seventh inning, but gave up an RBI single to Cesar Valera. Richy Pedroza was next and he lined a 3-2 pitch into the corner in right for a two-run double that made it 8-3. Chris Razo took over for Martin and an error on an infield single by Bryan allowed Pedroza to score for a 9-3 lead. Polanco retired the Rattlers in order in the seventh and eighth innings. Steven Sabatino set the Rattlers down 1-2-3 in the ninth to finish the game. The final game of the series is Sunday afternoon. Javier Salas, the 10th round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers from the 2014 draft, will make his Midwest League debut as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Peoria plans on Arturo Reyes (6-7, 3.75) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 1:05pm. The first 1,000 fans to attend Sunday's game will receive the Khris Davis bobblehead courtesy of Goodwill as part of the 20th Anniversary bobblehead series. Fans can play catch on-field courtesy of Rasmussen College before the Rattlers game and Bernie Brewer, the mascot of the Milwaukee Brewers, will be on hand to meet and greet fans as part of Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan. Plus, Timber Rattlers players and coaches will be wearing gold Rattlers jerseys based on the design of the Milwaukee Brewers and all Timber Rattlers players will be available for a postgame autograph session. Sunday is also McClone's Strike Out Cancer Day. The Timber Rattlers will donate $1 for all tickets sold on Sunday to the Strike Out Cancer Day Fund to benefit local families battling pediatric cancer. Shear Chaos Salon will be at the ballpark for fans who wish to participate in a Locks of Love Drive. Be the Match Bone Marrow registry will be at the game with information on how to Be the Match. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, catch the action on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm. Sunday's game is also available to MiLB.tv subscribers. HOME RUN: PEO: Rowan Wick (2nd, 2 on in 3rd inning off Preston Gainey, 2 out) WP: Rob Kaminsky (6-2) LP: Preston Gainey (3-7) TIME: 3:02 ATTN: 5,797 Wisconsin Boxscore I was at the game and was shocked when Preston Gainey went 93,93,93,94 according to my stalker gun on FBs in the first, he's added significant velocity. Unfortunately his control is still lacking so the end result hasn't been what he or we would be looking for. About the only bad thing at Neuroscience Field is the crappy stadium gun, it's regularly off 2-4 MPH but every once in a while will nail a pitch. Harvey Martin is an enigma... he has a 91-93 MPH FB, decent secondary stuff, he's not wild in that he's missing spots by 2-3 feet like some guys, but he regularly leaves pitches up in the zone over the plate and gets beat around. Clint Coulter (2-4) had the only multi-hit game for the T-Rats, both singles were to right field. The first was well struck, the 2nd a blooper into no man's land in short RF. St Louis prospect Rob Kaminsky looked to be working with a cutter against RH batters, he was 86-87 and then starting mixing in a 4 seamer at 89-91, topping out at 92. He's not flashy, his delivery is a bit messy, but it's hard to complain about the ultimate result. Wisconsin Recap Wisconsin Gameday

Sounds Settle For Split After 1-0 Loss Nashville's String Of 14 Straight Scoreless Innings Snapped Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/8/0/84801180/cuts/Sean_Halton_703_3_ey87ryie_7x6y0bkr.jpg Sean Halton (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In a complete flip from a game played hours before, the first-place Nashville Sounds (61-53) fell victim to a late rally, losing in walk-off fashion to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (47-66) 1-0 in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Security Service Field on Friday night. Like in Game 1, neither team was able to push a run across in the first six innings. Sounds starter Kyle Heckathorn (3-2) provided another solid outing in a spot start, pitching three shutout innings and allowing only three hits. Jose De La Torre followed with two innings of scoreless relief, giving him six straight appearances without allowing a run. The Sounds had a chance to open the scoring when Sean Halton hit a one-out triple in the top of the second, but he would be stranded to keep the game scoreless. Halton was the only Sounds player to record multiple hits in the game. The Nashville found itself in business again in the top of the fifth when Hector Gomez and Shawn Zarraga led off the inning with walks. Sky Sox reliever Juan Nicasio benefitted from a stroke of luck when Kevin Mattison followed with a hard line drive that resulted in a double play to end the threat. Reliever Alfredo Figaro ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh, allowing a pair of singles to lead off the inning. After recording outs on a sacrifice bunt and strikeout, he then walked Rafael Ynoa intentionally to set up a force at any base. Cristhian Adames then became the hero, coming up with the big hit to seal a loss for Nashville. The run scored by Colorado Springs snapped the Sounds' streak of 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings. The Sounds will now begin the second half of their road trip Saturday night in New Orleans, with RHP Michael Blazek (1-4, 4.15) taking the hill for Nashville against Zephyrs RHP Anthony DeSclafani (2-2, 3.24). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Nashvile Game2 Boxscore I admit that I don't find Kyle Heckathorn starting games in AAA to be particularly invigorating at this point, but he got the job done and has been pitching much better over his last 10 appearances. The Sounds only put 4 hits on the board, so Sean Halton's (2-4) effort was half of the team's offensive output... boo. Nashvile Game2 Recap Nashvile Game2 Gameday

Rogers Lifts Sounds To Win Opener, 2-1 Nashville's Rob Wooten Escapes 7th Inning Jam for Save Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/8/2/85814482/cuts/Jason_Rogers_627_3_z19d4h17_r7bqhtsh.jpg COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (61-52) put together a late rally that was capped off by Jason Rogers' game-winning home run to defeat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday night at Security Service Field. Rogers' solo home run, his fourth of the season and first on the road, was just fair over the left-field wall and broke the 1-1 tie. The team was able to plate the game-tying run in the 6th inning, when Pete Orr grounded into a force out at second with the bases loaded that scored Hector Gomez, 2-for-4, from third. The Sounds offense had plenty of chances to score with baserunners in every inning, but the team finished 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann got off to a slow start, walking his first three batters, and Sky Sox outfielder Matt McBride made him pay by driving a double off the wall in left field to give Colorado Springs a 1-0 lead in the game's initial frame. Jungmann settled in, retiring a stretch of eight consecutive batters from the 2nd to 4th inning to keep the Sounds in the game. The right-hander limited the Sky Sox to two hits in five innings of work before reliever Arcenio Leon (1-2) entered the game. Leon picked up the win in his clean inning of work, while closer Rob Wooten had to work out of a 7th inning that started with two runners in scoring position and no outs. Wooten retired his three with a groundout and two bases-loaded strikeouts for his 8th save of the season. The Sounds will send RHP Kyle Heckathorn (3-2, 6.18) to the hill in game two against RHP Leuris Gomez (1-1, 5.52). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME. Nashville Game1 Boxscore Taylor Jungmann just isn't able to get through 6 with any consistency yet at this level. Outside of the 1st today he pitched well enough to do so though, he was only at 73 pitches when he was pulled for the Colorado 6th. Manager Rick Sweet was playing for the win and pinch hit for him in the middle of the 1 run rally during Nashville's top half of the inning. Taylor added a pick off to his 4 BBs and 4 SOs in the contest. Nashville Game1 Recap Nashville Game1 Gameday

Rattlers 5-1 win over Peoria is Taylor-Made Brennan hits grand slam, Williams strikes out 11 By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/2/6/87550126/cuts/August_1_Taylor_Williams_zln8g0t3_ml47ktt4.jpg Taylor Williams allowed one hit and struck out eleven on Friday night against the Peoria Chiefs. Williams earned his eighth win of the season as the Rattlers won 5-1. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) GRAND CHUTE, WI - Taylor Brennan gave the Timber Rattlers a big lead and Taylor Williams made sure the Peoria Chiefs couldn't get going on Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Brennan hit a grand slam in a five-run second inning and Williams struck out eleven over seven innings in Wisconsin's 5-1 victory over the Chiefs. The Rattlers have won four straight games. The Rattlers (59-50 overall, 23-17 second half) scored all the runs they would need in the second inning. Rafael Neda reached on an error with one out. Omar Garcia walked. Then, Garcia beat out a force play at second on a slow chopper to third off the bat of Jose Pena. That loaded the bases for Steve Halcomb to face Peoria starter Luis Perdomo. Halcomb drew a walk on a 3-1 pitch to force in Neda for a 1-0 lead. Brennan was next and he lined an 0-1 pitch from Perdomo over the wall in left for a grand slam and a 5-0 lead. The bases loaded homer was the second of the season for Brennan, who has tied Chris Snelling (2000), Michael Cox (2004), and Clint Coulter (2014) for the most grand slams in a season by a Timber Rattler. Brennan's grand slam was also the fifth of the season by a Timber Rattler to set a franchise record for slams in a single season. Brennan is 6-for-13, 3 2Bs, 2HRs, 2BBs, 21 RBI with the bases loaded this season. Williams allowed a leadoff double to Ronald Castillo in the second inning. That was it. The Wisconsin right-hander retired 21 of the 22 Peoria batters he faced - including the final eighteen in order - on Friday night. He didn't walk a batter and struck out eleven. The eleven strikeouts set a new single game high as a professional for Williams who is now 8-1 on the season. The Chiefs (58-51, 21-19) got their lone run of the game in the top of the ninth against Wisconsin reliever Chad Thompson. Vaughn Bryan drew a walk and went to second on defensive indifference. CJ McElroy, Jr. blooped a single into left to put runners at the corners. Justin Ringo singled to right-center to knock in Bryan. Thompson got a strikeout for the second out, but walked Rowan Wick to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. Thompson got the final out of the game on a routine fly ball to center. Game two of the series is Saturday night. Preston Gainey (3-6, 4.16) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Rob Kaminsky (5-2, 1.50) will make the start for the Chiefs. Game time is 6:35pm. There has been a lot of excitement and talk about the Milwaukee Bucks this summer and they will be bringing that excitement to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium for Milwaukee Bucks Night. Meanwhile Grant Holmes has given up 5 runs in 20 innings, is sporting an .850 WHIP, 10.4 SO/9, 2.2 BB/9, and a sparkling 4.6 SO/BB. Ultimately all that matters is who has the best MLB career but I would have hoped for more from the #12 overall pick to this point. I'm certainly not ready to jump ship yet, Jordan Yamamoto has also struggled out of the gate. Hopefully both players get their feet underneath them and start their ascensions towards Milwaukee next season. Of the other players I liked for that #12 pick, Kyle Freeland didn't make it to us but has been spectacular in the Pioneer League and Sean Newcomb hasn't thrown a pitch in live action yet.

Thornburg - From 15-to-60 day DL
TheCrew07 replied to fondybrewfan's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I would guess we are going to find out that Thornburg will need TJ surgery. I don't recall a single Brewer pitcher who has successfully rehabbed and avoided surgery, basically all that happens is recovery is set back to 2-3 months impacting the following season as well. With injuries no news = bad news. Tyler hasn't pitched at any level since 6/6 when he blew up in a disastrous outing and there hasn't been a peep about his rehab/recovery. I would love for the Brewers to prove me wrong but I'm not holding out much hope. -
Mitch Haniger is valuable, he wasn't "nothing". I don't have problem trading him because as I said the OF situation is very crowded in the short and long term. I do take issue with how his talents and ceiling are being represented by some in this thread. BC is incredibly hard on RH batters and he's held his own very well in AA. Braun only put a .784 OPS in BC and the way Haniger is being scrutinized in this thread I wonder what would have been posted about had he been traded at the deadline in 2006.

Sounds Rally Over Sky Sox, 5-4 Nashville Erases Two Late Deficits In Win Nashville Sounds COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The first-place Nashville Sounds (60-52) fought back from two late deficits before finally holding on for a 5-4 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (46-65) in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Security Service Field on Thursday night. The win prevented Nashville from being swept in a twinbill for the first time in 2014, and the Sounds now hold a 2-0-3 record in doubleheaders this season. The win also gives Nashville seven victories in its last nine games. Trailing 4-3 in the final inning of the seven-frame contest, the Sounds got a rally started when a pitch hit catcher Shawn Zarraga to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Lucas May then advanced on a sacrifice bunt and groundout before Sean Halton came up with a two-out double to tie the game. Nashville then took the lead when catcher Dustin Garneau threw away a Pete Orr dribbler that allowed Halton to score. Sounds starter Donovan Hand (1-6) twirled another masterful start, pitching 4.2 innings, but left the game with two runners on base and the score tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Dustin Molleken came in and allowed a two-run triple to Jason Pridie, with both runs charged to Hand to snap his string of 10 consecutive innings without allowing a run. Despite allowing a pair of runs on three hits, Hand's ERA since joining the rotation is 2.07 (3er/13ip) in three starts. Colorado Springs tacked on another run shortly after, when Molleken threw a wild pitch to allow Pridie to score. Nashville responded with another two-out rally in the top of the sixth that was sparked by a Eugenio Velez single. After taking two bases on a wild pitch by reliever Christian Friedrich, Velez scored on a triple by Jason Rogers. Matt Clark then tied the game with a home run to right field, his fourth of the season. The Sky Sox took back the lead off of Molleken again in the bottom of the sixth, when Drew Garcia came through with a one-out RBI single that scored Garneau to give Colorado Springs a 4-3 advantage. Once the Sounds jumped ahead in the top of the seventh, Rob Wooten secured the important victory with a scoreless bottom half to pick up his seventh save of the season. The Sounds and Sky Sox have another doubleheader on tap Friday, with Nashville RHP Taylor Jungmann (5-5, 5.13) squaring off against RHP Jair Jurrjens (0-2, 3.46) in Game 1, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT. Sounds RHP Kyle Heckathorn (3-2, 6.18) will follow in Game 2 against RHP Leuris Gomez (1-1, 5.52). Nashville Game2 Boxscore Quite the interesting pitching match-up tomorrow. Sounds Shut Out In Continued Game, 6-0 Nashville Sounds COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (59-52) never got the offense going in the continuation of Wednesday's suspended game, falling 6-0 to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Thursday evening at Security Service Field. The game, which began on Wednesday as the first part of a doubleheader, picked up in the top of the third inning with the Sky Sox leading 2-0 courtesy of a two-run second inning against rehabbing Brewers pitcher Jim Henderson (0-1). Henderson allowed Ryan Wheeler a solo home run and then left the bases loaded with two outs for reliever Jose De La Torre. Henderson tossed 21 pitches, 11 for strikes, in the losing effort and was charged with two runs after De La Torre chucked a wild pitch to score one of his inherited runners. The rain proved too much for the field in the third inning, at which point the suspension was called. Play resumed at 6:00 PM Thursday night with Johnnie Lowe making the start for Nashville. Lowe allowed one run to Colorado Springs in his three innings of work as Rafael Ynoa slapped a single through the hole at second in the fourth inning. In the sixth, reliever Brent Leach surrendered three runs to the Sky Sox. First baseman Kyle Parker drove an RBI single up the middle for the first run, which was followed by a run-scoring throwing error committed by Leach as he tried to start a double-play at second. Infielder Angelys Nina hit into an RBI groundout to score Parker from third base for the Sky Sox final run of the contest. Nashville finished with six hits, led by Caleb Gindl, who went 2-for-3. Irving Falu, Jason Rogers, Matt Pagnozzi and Hector Gomez also recorded base knocks. RHP Donovan Hand will make the start for Nashville in game two opposite the Sky Sox RHP Dan Houston. Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME. Nashville Game1 Boxscore Nashville Game 1 Recap Nashville Game 1 Gameday

Late Rattler rally beats Kane County 7-3 Wisconsin completes the sweep of Cougars By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - Omar Garcia tripled in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and send the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 7-3 victory over the Kane County Cougars Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The win gave the Rattlers a three-game sweep of the Cougars. Kane County (67-42 overall, 22-17 second half) scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Chesny Young singled to start the game. An error on a potential double play ball off the bat of Carlos Penalver allowed Young to go to third. Ben Carhart's sacrifice fly drove in Young for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars added another unearned run in the top of the fourth inning. Jefferey Baez blooped a double to right and it was misplayed to allow him to take third base. Kevin Brown's RBI grounder to short drove in Baez for a 2-0 lead. Wisconsin (58-50, 22-17) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Clint Coulter drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second base on a bunt by Garcia. Dustin DeMuth drove in Coulter with a double to left, Wisconsin's first hit in the game off Kane County starter Ben Wells. Jose Pena followed with a single to move Demuth to third. Angel Ortega's sacrifice fly drove in DeMuth with the tying run. The Timber Rattlers took the lead without getting a hit in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor Brennan drew a leadoff walk, but was erased on a force play as Chris McFarland reached on a fielder's choice. Michael Ratterree was hit by a pitch and David Denson reached on an error to load the bases. Coulter drew a walk to force in McFarland and the Rattlers were up 3-2. Wisconsin starter Clint Terry turned the lead over to Barrett Astin in the top of the seventh. Terry allowed two unearned runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out fout. Kane County almost tied the game in the seventh. Carlos Penalver was at first with two outs. Ben Carhart sent a tough grounder to short and the throw to first was wild. Penalver raced around to third and headed for the plate as first baseman David Denson tracked down the ball on the warning track in front of the seats along the Kane County dugout. Denson threw a strike to the plate that beat Penalver. Coulter made the tag for the third out of the inning. But, the Cougars would tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. Jeimer Candelario singles with one out. Cael Brockmeyer doubled to the gap in right-center and Candelario scored without a play to even the score 3-3. Denson was at first base with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and stole second, his second steal of the season. Then, Coulter drew a walk, his third free pass of the game. Garcia came to the plate and he wasn't bunting this time. The Rattlers centerfielder lined a 1-0 pitch from reliever Zak Hermans just fair down the line in right for a triple to drive in both Denson and Coulter for a 5-3 lead. Wisconsin picked up insurance runs on RBI singles by DeMuth and Pena and were up 7-3 heading to the ninth inning. Astin shutdown the Cougars 1-2-3 in the ninth to close out the three-game sweep. The win put the Timber Rattlers eight games over .500 for the first time this season. The loss was the sixth straight for Kane County. The Timber Rattlers begin a three-game series with the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night at 7:05pm. Taylor Williams (7-1, 2.52) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers in game one. Rob Perdomo (2-1, 4.82) is set to start for the Chiefs. Ducks Unlimited presents Outdoors Night on Friday night. Timber Rattlers players and coaches will be wearing jerseys with a special outdoors camouflage pattern. These jerseys will be available in a silent auction during the game with the proceeds going to Ducks Unlimited. The first 500 fans to attend the game will receive a flashlight in the shape of a duck call from Ducks Unlimited. As long as I mentioned it he was the Cubs' 28th ranked prospect coming into the season and he's way out of the top 30 now with Russell and the most recent draft. I feel bad for mentioning this repeatedly but Clint Terry doesn't have a live arm but he sure knows how to pitch. I think as usual there are posters who are a looking at a statline and making determinations about what a young player is or isn't without any context. Haniger has enough tools to be an average RF offensively with above average defense as his ceiling. He'll hit somewhere between .250 and .270, has the potential to hit 20 HRs, has a decent eye at the plate, a good arm, and can even play a passable CF. He's not a burner, but he's not slow, he's just a very good baseball player who does many things well but isn't all that flashy. Parra is a decent upgrade of the bench and Milwaukee's OF situation is crowded so losing Haniger isn't the end of world, but Haniger may well end up having a better all around career. This trade isn't a slam dunk win for the Brewers but they traded from a position of strength to acquire an upgrade for the MLB team which made more sense than trying to sell out for someone like Price.

Archer on target in Wisconsin's 2-0 win over Kane County Rattlers starter strikes out eleven in seven innings By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/2/6/87176926/cuts/Archer_7_30_2014_ir9pnkef_jjg38fp6.jpg Tristan Archer struck out 11 over seven shutout innings to pick up the win against the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) GRAND CHUTE, WI - Tristan Archer struck out eleven Kane County Cougars in seven innings to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 2-0 victory on Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Omar Garcia had two hits and scored both Wisconsin runs to provide all the offense Archer needed. Wisconsin (57-50 overall, 21-17 second half) took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Garcia doubled off the base of the wall in left field with one out and stole third. Jose Pena's chopper to third was enough to get Garcia home for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars (67-41, 22-16) had one good threat against Archer in the game. Jacob Rogers singled with one out in the seventh. Kevin Brown singled with two outs to put runners at first and second. Archer struck out Jeffrey Baez on a 2-2 pitch to end the threat on his 100th pitch of the night. Archer allowed five hits and walked none in his seven innings. He set a new single game high as a professional for innings pitched and strikeouts to put himself in line for his fourth win of the season. The Rattlers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth against the Kane County bullpen. Garcia singled to start the inning and stole second against James Pugliese. Then, Pena drew a walk and Pugliese left with an injury. David Garner took over on the hill to face Angel Ortega. Kane County was expecting a bunt from Ortega and the defensive alignment played with the third baseman in on the grass. Garcia and Pena pulled a double steal instead and the throw to third was late. Garner struck out Ortega, but threw a wild pitch with Taylor Brennan at the plate to allow Garcia score for a 2-0 lead. Zach Quintana, who worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, gave up back-to-back singles to Chesny Young and Ben Carhart to start the ninth. Quintana struck out Rogers for the first out, but threw a wild pitch with Jeimer Candelario at the plate to move the tying runs in scoring position. Quintana got the second out by striking out Candelario. He got the final out when Jeffrey Baez hit a hard grounder to short for a 6-3 putout. The Timber Rattlers have matched their best record of the season at seven games over .500. The Cougars, the team with the best record in the Midwest League, have lost a season-high five straight games. The final game of the series between the Rattlers and Cougars is Thursday night at 7:05pm. Barrett Astin (6-5, 4.79) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Kane County has Ben Wells (0-0, 0.00) as their scheduled starter.
