  1. Rattlers win fourth straight game with 7-4 triumph at Lake County Wisconsin scores seven in the 2nd & Banda pitches seven scoreless By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattler EASTLAKE, OH - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers used a big two-out rally in the second inning and seven scoreless innings from starting pitcher Anthony Banda to defeat the Lake County Captains 7-4 on Thursday afternoon at Classic Park. The first two Timber Rattlers to bat - Taylor Brennan and Rafael Neda - in the top of the second inning reached on walks issued by Lake County starting pitcher Luis Lugo, but he got the next hitter to ground into a 5-3 double play. That looked like the end of the scoring chances for the Rattlers (54-47 overall, 18-14 second half). Then, the next seven Timber Rattlers reached base to pull away from the Captains. Jose Pena singled off the foot of Lugo to start the rally. Angel Ortega dropped a blooper into center to score Neda for a 1-0 lead. Johnny Davis drew a walk to load the bases for Chris McFarland. McFarland worked the count to 3-2 and lined a single up the middle to score two runs for a 3-0 lead and to knock Lugo out of the game. Lake County (42-60, 15-17) went to Justin Garcia to face Michael Ratterree. McFarland stole second during Ratterree's at bat and the Captains elected to try to pick Davis off third base. The throw went into left field and Davis scored easily as McFarland cruised into third. Ratterree would draw a walk, the sixth of the game by Lake County pitching, to set the stage for David Denson. Denson singled to center to knock in McFarland for a 5-0 lead. The throw in from center got away from everyone and trickled to the backstop behind home plate to allow Ratterree to take third and Denson to move to second. Taylor Brennan made the Captains pay for their third error of the inning when he singled to right to send both Ratterree and Denson home for a 7-0 lead. Meanwhile, Banda was cruising. He tossed seven scoreless innings in 79 pitches. Banda allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out six. Lake County got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning against reliever Victor Diaz. Diaz walked the leadoff batter and gave up a two-run homer to Richard Stock. Brian Ruiz followed with a double and an error allowed Ivan Castillo to reach. Claudio Bautista got Ruiz home with a grounder to third. Diaz got the next two outs without incident. In the ninth, Diaz retired the first two batters. Stock kept the inning going with a double. Ruiz singled to left to drive in Stock to cut Wisconsin's lead to three. Diaz ended the game and the Captains comeback hopes when he got Castillo to ground out to second for the final out. Wisconsin's win was their fourth in a row and pushed them to seven games over .500 to match their high water mark of the season. Lake County has lost eight straight games - all to teams from the Western Division. The final game of the series is Friday night at Classic Park. Zach Quintana (3-4, 6.02) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Luis Lugo (5-7, 5.55) is set to start for the Captains. Game time is 6:00pm CDT. Catch the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:40pm CDT. 2. Right because everyone in the NL would be looking forward to Price, Wainwright, and Wacha in the post season... I know I'd feel great about those match-ups from a Brewer perspective...
  3. Sounds Take Down Sky Sox, 5-2 Nashville's Orr Goes Yard; Pena Picks Up Seventh Win Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/2/4/86021024/cuts/MPS_5788_Large_aldkuz60_81upyl54.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (55-50) downed the visiting Colorado Springs Sky Sox by a 5-2 margin Wednesday night at Greer Stadium, highlighted by a four-run 6th inning featuring Pete Orr's pinch-hit home run. Matt Clark, 2-for-4, got the Sounds' big inning started with his lead-off single to left field. Caleb Gindl followed by slapping a double to right field to score Clark and level the game at two runs apiece. Outfielder Kevin Mattison, 2-for-4, gave Nashville the go-ahead run by driving in Gindl with his single to right. Then Nashville took a 5-2 lead when Orr crushed a two-run pinch-hit home run over the tent beyond the right field wall. It marks only the second pinch-hit home run of the season for the Sounds. Starting pitcher Ariel Pena (7-6) held the Sky Sox scoreless through his first five frames, but ran into trouble in the 6th inning, allowing Colorado Springs to take the 2-1 lead with two runs on three hits. Pena, who picked up the win after benefitting from the Sounds' four-run 6th, finished with six strikeouts and no walks. He finished the inning and was followed by reliever Brent Leach, who delivered two scoreless innings for Nashville. Rob Wooten entered in the 9th inning, using only 11 pitches to record three outs and log his fifth save of the season. In the 3rd inning, Clark helped Nashville out to a 1-0 lead with his RBI single. The run scored Irving Falu, who singled to reach base and stole a pair of bags to stand at third. Gindl, 3-for-4, had two doubles on the night to give him 89 in his four-year Sounds career, which ties him with Chad Hermansen (1998-2002) for 2nd all-time among Sounds players. The Sounds look to win the series against Colorado Springs on Thursday at Greer Stadium. PCL All-Star RHP Mike Fiers (7-5, 2.68) will make the start for Nashville opposite the Sky Sox's LHP Pedro Hernandez (6-5, 6.05). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME. Nashville Boxscore It's always nice when the "good" Ariel Pena shows up. Nashville Recap Nashville Gameday
  4. Wisconsin doubles up Captains in 8-4 win Pena, Denson each drive in three runs for Rattlers By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers EASTLAKE, OH - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored five runs in the first inning to grab an early lead that they never relinquished on Wednesday night at Classic Park. Wisconsin defeated the Lake County Captains 8-4 to win their third straight game. The Rattlers (53-47 overall, 17-14 second half) pounced on the Captains right away. Leadoff hitter Johnny Davis started the game with a walk. Chris McFarland extended his hitting streak to six games with a bunt single. The duo pulled a double steal with Michael Ratterree at the plate and Davis scored when the throw to third sailed into left field. Ratterree would draw a walk after McFarland have moved to third on a wild pitch. Ratterree would wind up at second on a wild pitch with David Denson at bat. Denson cashed in both runners with a single to center to give the Rattlers a 3-0 lead four batters into the game. Later in the first, Taylor Brennan was on second and Omar Garcia was at first with two outs. Jose Pena lined a double into the corner in left to drive in both runners for a 5-0 lead. The Captains (42-59, 15-16) got a run in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by Clint Frazier. Wisconsin starting pitcher Preston Gainey retired the next seven batters he faced, but allowed two-out singles to Claudio Bautista and Frazier in the bottom of the third. Gainey appeared to get out of the inning on a ground out by Mike Pappi. However, catcher's interference was called on the play and the Captains had the bases loaded. Nellie Rodriguez drilled a single to left to drive in a pair of runs and Wisconsin's lead was cut to 5-3. Pena added to the Rattlers lead in the top of the fourth with a long, solo home run to left to make the score 6-3. The Timber Rattlers kept adding on in the inning. Davis and McFarland each singled to put runners on the corners with one out. McFarland stole second on a pitch that struck out Ratterree, but the throw went to third to try and get Davis. The throw was wild again and Davis scored to make it 7-3. Denson drove in his third run of the game when his single off the glove of the first baseman allowed McFarland to score. Wisconsin's 8-3 lead was tested in the bottom of the fourth inning as Gainey gave up a single and back-to-back walks to load the bases. A wild pitch by Gainey let one run score and move the other runners up to second and third. Ivan Castillo appeared to pull the Captains back to within three runs with a sacrifice fly to left-center. But, the runner at third was ruled to have left early and was doubled off third base. Gainey escaped the fourth with no more damage and pitched a scoreless fifth. Seth Harvey took over the mound duties for the Rattlers in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings before turning over the 8-4 lead to Luke Curtis in the top of the eighth. Curtis closed out the game with a perfect eighth and a 1-2-3 ninth. Game two of the series is scheduled for Thursday morning at Classic Park. Anthony Banda (4-6, 4.27) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Captains will counter with Luis Lugo (5-7, 5.55). Game time is 10:00am CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 9:40am. HOME RUNS: WIS: Jose Pena (7th, 0 on in 4th inning off Dace Kime, 0 out) LC: Clint Frazier (11th, 0 on in 1st inning off Preston Gainey, 1 out) WP: Preston Gainey (3-6) LP: Dace Kime (5-12) TIME: 3:08 ATTN: 2,260 Wisconsin Boxscore I wish I would have pointed out Jose Pena's (2-4,2B,HR) power drought sooner... I have no doubt that David Denson (2-5) will be a hitter, the defensive side of things is a tad tough to project, but I like his offensive game. Chris McFarland's (3-5) effort lifted his BA to .305 and his OPS has squeaked over .800 to .804. Luke Curtis' scoreless outing was his first with the T-Rats. Wisconsin Recap
  5. Well at least Harrison is holding his own, I was so thrilled with that pick, I had Pitt taking him in the mock draft... I would rather the score in Maryvale wasn't 20-3 right now for the bad guys, but Kodi Medeiros and Jake Gatewood have plenty of time to make adjustments and get their feet under them. Neither player's stat line is pretty which is why I didn't link them.
  6. Sounds Strike Early in 7-5 Win Nashville Returns to First Place With Victory Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/8/2/85814482/cuts/Jason_Rogers_627_3_z19d4h17_r7bqhtsh.jpg NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Behind an early offensive outburst and a solid start from Michael Blazek, the Nashville Sounds (54-50) picked up a 7-5 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (44-58) at Greer Stadium on Tuesday night. The victory, coupled with a 1-0 New Orleans loss in Iowa, moved the Sounds back into first place in the American Conference Southern Division. Nashville took a 3-0 advantage off of Sky Sox starter Brian Burres (1-3) in the top of the first thanks to a string of RBI singles by Jason Rogers, Matt Clark and Hector Gomez. The opening strike and win improves the Sounds' record when scoring first at Greer Stadium to 26-2. Rogers went 2-for-3 in the contest, giving him hits in nine of his last 12 starts with nine RBIs in that span. Gomez's impressive July continued as well, as his 1-for-3 performance, which also included a sacrifice fly in the third inning, gives him hits in 16 of 19 games played this month. Sounds starter Michael Blazek (1-4) dealt four scoreless innings, striking out five while allowing just three hits. He was followed by Jose De La Torre, who threw two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his second win of the year. Nashville added an insurance run in the top of the seventh after Sean Halton scored Eugenio Velez on a fielder's choice. It took until the top of the eighth for the Sky Sox to get on the board, as they cut Nashville's lead to 5-2 after a Matt McBride RBI single and an error by Gomez off of Sounds reliever Alfredo Figaro. Brent Leach and Rob Wooten, however, combined to get out of the inning with the Sounds still holding a comfortable margin. Matt Pagnozzi delivered a crushing blow in the bottom of the eighth when he hit a two-run home run over the left field wall, his 10th of the season. Colorado Springs did not go down without a fight, scoring three runs off of Wooten in the top of the ninth and putting the winning run on base before Dustin Molleken came in to get the final out and pick up his third save of the year The series between the Sounds and Sky Sox rolls along with the next game scheduled for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Sounds RHP Ariel Pena (6-6, 4.62) will take to the bump opposite Sky Sox RHP Mike McClendon (2-1, 3.30). Nashville Boxscore Yes that Mike McClendon, our old friend. Apparently this is former Brewer pitcher week for the Sounds... where's Claudio Vargas when you need him? Maybe his Mexican league team will give him up to complete a trifecta... Nashville Recap Nashville Gameday
  7. He works 91-94, about what Gallardo did coming through the minors. He was primarily a 2 pitch guy last year; a FB with decent sink and run and slider that flashed plus. He's a low 3/4 arm slot guy so I'm not sure he'll ever possess the command necessary to be more than a #3. He wasn't as inconsistent as say Jorge Lopez, who had wide swings in quality of stuff and location from outing to outing, but he doesn't have the pinpoint command or nasty arsenal of multiple pitches necessary to be more than a #3 either. Who knows though, if his change up and slider keep progressing so that he would have a consistently plus slider and change by the time he hits MLB then he might have enough to be special even without the command and be a #2. I don't really ever throw out a best case projection for any player so like Taylor Williams on this year's team I'm guessing he falls in that #3 range if he sticks as a starter. Peralta was 2 pitch guy with no command and a nasty slider when I saw him in WI so quite a bit can happen by the time a player hits MLB, there's always hope for that best case scenario.
  8. I've been dismissing Nathan Orfsince he signed (UFA) but he skipped a level and while his power predictably fell off so his OBP is higher than his SLG, he's still been extremely impressive. Between he and Brennan the Brewers have done some very fine work after the first 20 rounds in recent drafts/signing periods. Did I mention he only has 2 errors in 21 games at 2B this season?
  9. Sounds Edged By Sox In Homestand Opener, 5-2 Clark, Gomez Homer For Nashville In Losing Effort Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/0/4/84286904/cuts/Clark_0711_lyyhbke3_ea3phv6l.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds opened their homestand on the short end of a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. Former Sound Chris Capuano (1-0) twirled a solid outing for the visitors, fanning 11 batters over seven innings while holding Nashville to a pair of runs on four hits to earn the win. PCL mid-season All-Star Donovan Hand made his first start of the season for Nashville and took a no-decision after allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in four frames of action. After retiring the first six batters in order, Hand gave up a run in the third as Colorado Springs took a 1-0 lead when Drew Garcia doubled and scored on Tim Smalling's RBI single. The Sky Sox upped their lead to 2-0 with an unearned run in the top of the fourth following a two-out fielding error by third baseman Jason Rogers. Capuano was virtually untouchable for the first six innings, holding Nashville scoreless while permitting only two hits over that stretch. The Sounds finally broke onto the scoreboard in a big way in the seventh, blasting a pair of mammoth 400+ foot homers to open the inning and knot the score at 2-2. First baseman Matt Clark broke up Capuano's shutout bid when he led off the Sounds' seventh by blasting the southpaw's first pitch for a massive 442-foot solo homer to right-center, the slugger's second longball of the year. Shortstop Hector Gomez (2-for-4) followed with a game-tying, 421-foot moon shot to left-center, his team-leading 12th roundtripper of the season. The homers were Nashville's third set of back-to-back big flies this season. The red-hot Gomez is batting a team-best .357 (25-for-70) with 13 RBIs and 10 extra-base hits in the month of July for the Sounds. Colorado Springs jumped right back on top in the eighth, plating three runs against Johnnie Lowe. Jason Pridie drew a one-out walk from the right-hander and later scored the go-ahead run on Angelys Nina's single to center. Dustin Garneau followed with a two-run single to up the Sky Sox lead to 5-2. Dan Houston worked the final two innings in scoreless fashion for Colorado Springs to close out the win and earn his first save of the year. The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. matchup on Tuesday. Right-hander Michael Blazek (1-4, 4.70) will make the start for the Sounds and face Colorado Springs southpaw Brian Burres (1-3, 6.92). Nashville Boxscore Donovan Hand was much better as a starter today despite the lack of strike outs, but perhaps it will be an outing he can build on. If you look at the boxscore you'll notice ever pitcher for the Sounds who pitched today has an ERA north of 4.4... *sigh* Jason Rogers has been a bit streaky since joining the Sounds, he posted his 3rd consecutive 0 fer this evening but still has an impressive last 10 games. I don't mind Capuano pitching well, just don't do it against the Brewers or their affiliates in the future please and thank you! Nashville Recap Nashville Gameday
  10. Rattlers wrap homestand with walkoff win in eleven innings Wisconsin beats Dayton 5-4 on RBI single by Pena By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/6/2/85598062/cuts/Pena_and_Neda_Celebrate_July_21_61kwvxp9_pxgevkm3.jpg Rafael Neda leaps at Jose Pena after Pena's RBI single in the bottom of eleventh inning drove Neda home with the winning run for Wisconsin's 5-4 victory over the Dayton Dragons Monday afternoon. GRAND CHUTE, WI - The series finale between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Dayton Dragons on Monday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium was filled with twists and turns and bumps and bruises, but the Rattlers outlasted the Dragons 5-4 in eleven innings. Jose Pena drove in the winning run with a single in the eleventh inning to put an exclamation point at the end of an odd game. David Denson gave Wisconsin (52-47 overall, 16-14 second half) a 1-0 lead with a mammoth home run to center. The ball sailed out of the stadium just to the right of the extended batters' eye that sits atop the wall beyond the boardwalk for a home run of over 450 feet. The homer was Denson's fourth of the year and his first since rejoining the team on July 18. Dayton (50-48, 14-16) tied the game in the top of the fifth. Jamodrick McGruber singled with two outs to drive in Jonathan Reynoso from third to even the score. That was the only run allowed by Wisconsin starting pitcher Taylor Williams. The right-hander, who was pitching on his 23rd birthday, struck out a professional career high nine and allowed three hits over 6-2/3 innings. Wisconsin went back in front in the bottom of the sixth. Omar Garcia singled and Chris McFarland walked to start the inning. Michael Ratterree drove in Garcia with a single and the Rattlers were up 2-1. Williams would walk Reynoso to start the seventh. Reynoso stole second to get into scoring position. Williams struck out the next two batters to get two outs. He was nearly to 100 pitches and came out of the game in favor of Tyler Alexander, who walked McGruder to put two runners on base. Alexander got the final out of the seventh on a tapper back to the mound. The game zigged in the top of the eighth. Alexander got the first out with a strikeout, but walked Phil Ervin and allowed a single to Jose Ortiz. Carlos Rosa was next and he hammered a tape-measure home run to left on the first pitch he saw from Alexander and the Dragons were up 4-2. Alexander hit Reynoso with the next pitch and the benches cleared as Reynoso stalked to the mound. Wisconsin catcher Rafael Neda got between Reynoso and the mound as Alexander tossed his glove aside and walked towards Reynoso. While that was going on, a heated altercation developed between Denson and Ortiz near first base. The respective coaching staffs calmed the situation down before things escalated. The end result was ejections for Alexander, Denson, Ortiz, and Reynoso. Harvey Martin came into the game to replace Alexander and retired the next two hitters and get the game to the bottom of the eighth. That's where the game zagged. Zack Weiss took over on the mound for the Dragons and walked Garcia. McFarland followed with a single. Ratterree drew a walk and the bases were loaded with no outs. The Dragons called for Alejandro Chacin to bail them out of the inning. Chacin got Taylor Brennan to ground into a 6-3 double play that allowed Garcia to score. The Rattlers trailed 4-3 and had a runner at third, but there were two outs. McGruder, who started the game at second base, had been moved to left after the defensive changed that were needed due to the Dayton ejections in the top of the inning. He had played one game in the outfield this season prior to Thursday, but had been an infielder/outfielder in the Seattle Mariners system for two seasons prior to joining the Reds organization this year. Steve Halcomb, who entered the game at first base for Denson after the ejection, stepped to the plate with the tying run at third and sent a fly to the track in left. McGruder got back to the track and leapt, but just missed the ball. Halcomb's double allowed McFarland to score the tying run to even the game 4-4. Martin tossed 3-2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts to keep the game tied and give Wisconsin a chance to win the game. The Rattlers hitters could not strike the winner in the ninth or tenth. In the eleventh, Neda drew a walk off Scott Brattvet, the fifth Dayton pitcher, to start the inning. Dustin DeMuth sacrificed Neda into scoring position with a bunt. Brattvet threw a wild pitch with Pena at the plate to get Neda to third. Then, Pena smacked a single to right on a 3-2 pitch to drive in Neda with the winning run. This was Pena's second walkoff hit of the season. He had previously hit an extra-innings walkoff, three-run home run to beat Lansing 10-7 in the first game of a doubleheader on April 16. Wisconsin has won two in a row and finished their ten-game homestand with a 6-4 record. The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday night at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio with a game against the Lake County Captains. Preston Gainey (2-6, 3.95) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dace Kim (5-11, 4.81) is set to start for the Captains. Game time is 6:00pm CDT. The broadcast is available on AM1280, WNAM and IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:40pm. HOME RUNS: DAY: Gabriel Rosa (1st, 2 on in 8th inning off Tyler Alexander, 1 out) WIS: David Denson (4th, 0 on in 2nd inning off Amir Garrett, 1 out) WP: Harvey Martin (3-5) LP: Scott Brattvet (3-6) TIME: 3:47 ATTN: 2,587 Postgame Post – July 21, 2014 A loaded postgame, the interviews are worth your time. Wisconsin Boxscore Remember when I posted Taylor Williams' MWL rankings for pitching peripherals pointing out that he'd been good but not great and I was hoping he'd ascend in the 2nd half? Well, he's been brilliant since the break. Tyler Alexander was ready to throw down which for some reason I found amusing as Chris was relaying the on-field action. Harvey Martin needed his 3.2 scoreless innings today in the worst way, he's only gone scoreless in 2 of his last 10 outings. Jose Pena was 2 for 21 on this homestand before his game winning hit today. I haven't had a chance to gush about David Denson since his injury and I disagree with the take that his April was awful... he was putting in quality ABs each time out, he was not overmatched even though the statistics would suggest otherwise. Omar Garcia (2-3,2 BB) had a nice day at the plate. Wisconsin Recap Wisconsin Gameday
  11. Sounds' Rallies Fall Short In Oklahoma City, 7-5 Nashville's Gomez Belts His 11th Homer of the Year Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/4/6/78466946/cuts/Hector_Gomez_519_1_Large_fpnfh2vr_mziy8nhz.jpg OKLAHOMA CITY - Despite rallying to tie the game in the 7th and 8th innings, the Nashville Sounds (53-49) were unable to top the Oklahoma City RedHawks Sunday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, losing the series final 7-5 . In the 8th inning, Sounds shortstop Hector Gomez, 3-for-4, belted a two-run home run, his 11th of the year, to level the game at five runs apiece; but the RedHawks answered by driving in two runs on a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the frame, proving to be the difference. Eight of the game's 12 runs were scored with two outs. The RedHawks scored two runs in the 1st inning on Marc Krauss's groundout and a Preston Tucker RBI double to left field. In the following inning, Oklahoma City added one more run when Austin Wates slapped a single to centerfield, scoring Matt Duffy, who doubled to lead off the frame. Nashville plated its first run in the 2nd inning on outfielder Kevin Mattison's single to right-center field to score Gomez from third base. Mattison finished the game two-for-four and has recorded multiple hits in five of his last seven games. In the 5th inning, left fielder Eugenio Velez drove a two-out single to center field to pull Nashville to within one run. Nashville worked a tie game in the 7th with infielder Irving Falu's second bunt single of the night. Tied 3-3 with one on and two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, Sounds reliever Dustin Molleken entered the game looking for the inning's final out, but instead the RedHawks touched the righty for a pair of RBI singles for the 5-3 advantage. Nashville reliever Brent Leach (4-2) was charged the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in the 8th inning. Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann worked five innings for Nashville, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. He fanned five RedHawks before reliever Kyle Heckathorn stepped in to begin the 6th inning. The Sounds return to Nashville on Monday to begin their third-to-last homestand of the season. The club welcomes the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to town for a four-game series. RHP Donovan Hand (1-6, 5.44) will make the start for Nashville opposite the Sky Sox's LHP Chris Capuano (0-0, 3.52). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME. Nashville Boxscore Interesting pitching match-up tomorrow... Taylor Jungmann was alright but this < 6 IP thing is becoming a trend, he's only gone 6 IP or more in 4 of his 12 AAA starts. Tonight he threw 47 of 82 pitches for strikes. 12. Just wanted to start with a thank you to MH and TLB for covering my games this week. Wisconsin stops skid with 3-0 win over Dayton Terry and Astin combine on 4-hit shutout By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/1/4/85470814/cuts/Clint_Terry_July_20_v58ypafi_p65mhgn4.jpg Clint Terry pitched six shutout innings in Wisconsin's 3-0 win over Dayton on Sunday afternoon. GRAND CHUTE, WI - Clint Terry and Barrett Astin gave the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers just what they needed to snap a three-game losing streak. The Timber Rattlers pitching tandem combined on a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Dayton Dragons Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Chris McFarland put the Timber Rattlers (51-47 overall, 15-14 second half) into the lead. McFarland singled up the middle with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the third inning. The hit drove in Jose Pena and Steve Halcomb for a 2-0 advantage. Michael Ratterree lined a solo homer just inside the left field foul pole with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend Wisconsin's lead to 3-0. The home run gave Ratterree the team lead in homers over Clint Coulter, who has 16. Ratterree is second in the Midwest League in homers behind South Bend's Daniel Palka, who has 18. That was all the Wisconsin pitchers needed. Terry allowed three hits, walked two and struck out five over his six scoreless innings. That put him in line for his third win of the season. Astin took over in the top of the seventh and retired the first six batters he faced. Dayton (50-47, 14-15) made it interesting in the top of the ninth against Astin. Robert Ramirez was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Phillip Ervin followed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate. Then, Astin fell behind Avain Rachal 3-1, but closed the game and earned his third save of the season by getting Rachal to ground into a 6-4-3 double play and Joe Hudson to ground out to third. The shutout was the fifth of the season for the Timber Rattlers. The final game of the homestand is Monday afternoon. Taylor Williams (7-1, 2.72) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dayton will counter with Amir Garrett (4-5, 3.86). Game time is 12:05pm. 16. This thread is what happens when people set their eyes on a championship instead of just being happy to get into the playoffs. The problem with most professional franchises is that they possess an extremely short term vision regardless of what "mode" they are in. There's a group of posters on the this forum who regularly lament the fact that WI is all about the Packers and that the Brewers for many are just a summer distraction, well why is that? Maybe the rich history and huge disparity of championships between the organizations might have something to do with it? The Brewers simply haven't earned the right to be held in the same kind of regard as the Packers and I don't intend that to be a slight against baseball at all. The Brewers as a franchise simply don't have anything legitimate to hang their hats on... 1 WS appearance 30 years ago doesn't really mean anything. I would love for the Brewers to become a power in MLB but they aren't going to do without the front end pitching and if they aren't able to develop that pitching and aren't able to compete for it in Free Agency, then they need to trade for it and I'm not talking about unloading prospects for 1-2 year window. I'm talking about trading for pieces of the puzzle with longevity that they can build around.
