  1. Simply put - the Brewers need Escobar because they can't afford to pay JJ Hardy. Escobar at $400,000 a year > Hardy at $8,000,000 a year. With our younger players reaching arbitration (Weeks, Hart, Bush etc) we need to save money - SS is the obvious solution.
  2. I had given some thought to Carmona lately as well - then I looked at his numbers. He was awesome for one season. The rest of his career - he has been horrible. I'd rather live with Parra's mediocrity.
  3. A career .809 OPS and he can play CF? Sounds like the perfect 4th OF - or 3rd OF is Corey Hart doesn't get his stuff together.
  4. Not many teams enjoy a AAA 2B/3B/SS with a 1.007 OPS. I feel like someone needs to tell Adam Heether that he just isn't that good. He may be a decent MLB player - but a 1.007 OPS!?!
  5. Just wanted to add my thanks as well. Taking and posting videos is awesome. Editing the videos is going way above and beyond.
  6. I was in that boat for a long time. I've changed my opinion of the situation. Manny Parra = Newer Version of Jorge De La Rosa (tantalizing lefty who just can't pitch) I'd like to trade him while he still has some value. If Manny Parra is a 6+ ERA pitcher next year - he won't be worth scrap iron.
  7. Well played sir. I have a question about Jeffress and developing pitching prospects in general. Do you really care about the results? Since the "development" process is largely based on working with a good coach, learning mechanics etc - shouldn't Jeffress just be placed with the Brewers best pitching coach, regardless of level? Just seems foolish to take a multi-million dollar investment and give him a new coach to "tweak" with him every year.
  8. For the record, it was kind of a "tongue in check" comment regarding Dennis. The editorial staff does a great job with the Power 50 - but Dennis might very well just into the top 30 in the next edition.
  9. "I feel like we're a better team than the Brewers," he said. "But today, they executed better than we did. They did the little things. We didn't do the little things the last two games. That's why they won the game." What he really meant... "We just have the worst manager in all of baseball," he said "Honestly, I can't believe we are expected to win with Dusty Baker as our coach. We've had a fair share of injuries - but with Ken Macha we would probably be 10 games above .500 too"
  10. I was actually disappointed to see Braddock's line - how DARE he go 2.1 scoreless innings without a strikeout! I wonder how the P50 editors who left Chris Dennis off their list sleep at night... Escobar with his 4th extra base hit in the last 9 games.
  11. Heading into today the Brewers lead the national league in quality starts. So saying "the bull pen is carrying this pitching staff" is quite a stretch. (While the bull pen has been great - a quality start is completely the work of the starting staff) Obviously someone like Peavy could help the Brewers. Johnathan Sanchez (or his type) has very little value this year to the Brewers. We are going to trade away our starting LF for a career 5.10 ERA pitcher to replace one of our starting pitchers? (None of whom have a career ERA above 5.00?)
  12. Teams looking for a corner outfielder have targeted Corey Hart as a possible solution, and the Brewers need a starting pitcher. The Tigers, Giants, and Red Sox either have scouted Hart or discussed him. Boston Globe As disappointing as Corey has been lately - I don't really see a natural fill-in on the Brewers roster. I am frustrated to keep hearing that the Brewers "need a starting pitcher". I believe we are still #1 in quality start in the National League.
  13. 804Sox - that was a great, well thought out post. As already mentioned - Hardy is under control for a year and a half. So while he certainly isn't on the same level of CC or Tex. I would think a year and a half of Hardy is fairly comparable to half a year of the aforementioned players. (Considering he plays a premium position) I've been after Buchholz for years. However, you point out one of his flaws - he has been in AAA for several years. While he has posted some fantastic minor league numbers, last year he pitched 76 innings in the major leagues with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP. Buchholz could just be an AAAA pitcher. (Phil Hughes and Homer Bailey were comparable pitchers in the minor leagues) Hardy has been a legitimate MLB all-star at SS. Other than his no-hitter - Buchholz MLB resume isn't very impressive. Lastly, regarding the CC trade - Michael Brantley was considered a very good prospect. Some actually considered him a better prospect than LaPorta.
  14. According to SI.com, the Mariners are going to be shedding players in the coming months as they head towards a full "rebuilding mode". Is there any reason why Russell Branyan shouldn't end up back on the Brewers? He is only signed through this year. I doubt too many teams have a huge interest in him - but he provides the Brewers with a lot of help at 3B. (And giving Counsell time off) He bats LH. He has 1.012 OPS. He has a .400 OBP. And the Brewers have a good relationship with Jack Z. Maybe trade away Gindl or Gillespie? (Or Brent Brewer) (And if you had May 30th as the date that someone would suggest trading for Russell Branyan - YOU WIN!)
  15. Ellsbury plays CF. He bats LH. He steals bases. He is a very good lead-off hitter in the AL EAST. He would become the best lead-off hitter in the NL Central. I understand your argument that Prince and Hardy seems like too much for Ellsbury and Buchholz - but there is also significant cost savings. We would get Buchholz for 6 years and Ellsbury for 3 years while giving up 2 years of Prince and 2 years of Hardy.
  16. How about we add Prince and Ellsbury in the deal as well?
  17. I'm just curious to hear what everyone's first impressions are of Mat Gamel so far as a MLB player. After today's game, Mat's batting average has dropped to .174. However, his BABIP is hovering around .230. So you can argue he has had some tough luck as well. He made one great play at 3B - and followed that up with an error later in the game. I also like him working with Willie Randolph on defense. (no disrespect to Don Money) His swing looks very pure. He is well balanced and takes the ball to all fields. But best of all....have you seen him running out the ground balls!?! In one of his first games he was on 1B for a grounder when the shortstop went to second for the force out. They should have gotten Gamel by 3 steps. He was running so hard I thought he beat the tag. (I still think he might have - the ump just called him out because he was surprised) If you haven't noticed yet - at least enjoy that aspect of his game. It is in stark contrast to Bill Hall watching everyone of his balls for 3 second before leaving the batters box.
  18. If Riske under goes Tommy John surgery his career might very well be over... It is possible that the Brewers are better off losing him? (I would imagine his contract is insured - if he never pitches for us again we might be able to recoup a bunch of that money)
  19. Between projecting the Brewers as "sellers" (they would probably have to lose around 30 of the next 40 games to be "sellers") and comparing Brett Lawrie to Bill Hall - I would say TBadder is having a pretty pessimistic day.
  20. Did Lawrie use performance enhancers to earn a long-term contract too? (Pure speculation - but come on, it was pretty funny?)
  21. The A's are in a real pickle with Holliday. They traded away a decent package hoping to contend this year - offer arbitration - and take the picks. If Holliday keeps performing at his current level, I am not sure that any team will give him a large long term contract. They could end up with a similar situation with the Arizona relief pitcher (Cruz?) Holliday might refuse arbitration, but not get any long term offers because no team is willing to give up draft picks for his services.
  22. How do you pronounce "Wily" Is it WHILE - Y or WILL Y
  23. That with Harang, Arroyo, Cueto and Volquez they will be in the hunt for 85 wins and a playoff birth. Unless they collapse, the Reds are more likely to add players than subtract.
  24. This was very surprising when I read it in the paper this morning. Haudricourt has absolutely HATED all of the Peavy talk and shut it down whenever he has gotten a chance. And, in spite of popular opinion, Melvin is very honest with Haudricourt. I HIGHLY doubt Haudricourt just wrote that article based on the White Sox trade falling through. I would imagine at the very least Melvin told him they were exploring the option. That is a LONG ways from completing a trade - but I would bet phone calls have been exchanged.
  25. I wonder if he might get called up to AAA with Escobar playing some 2B.
