  1. I guess I always tend to look at the big picture and not just 4 hitters. 3 of those hitters provide good to above-average defensively and help the team in areas besides hitting. Rickie Weeks, he can go somewhere because his overall game is lacking, in my opinion. Two of the guys hit at the bottom of the order already with the exception of Cameron, who has provided some decent power and speed in the outfield. I dont have the time to look up are they the worst in the MLB so far and I dont really have the interest. To me, I think you are pigeon-holing your expectations of a baseball player to hitting while ignoring the other aspects of the game. So, to answer your question, I would like help at 2b down the stretch, but not the other positions, and again that's because his overall game is weak, not just his AVG and OPS. The other guys, I'm okay with their hitting stats because they help in other areas. (pared back long quote --1992)
  2. A Copy of my rant email to the Milwaukee Rec Adult Sports Department. Sir or Madam, I am writing to express how extremely disappointed I am in the operation and decision making of the Milwaukee Parks and Rec Department with the regard to inclement weather and playing conditions. Having just moved from Florida and playing ball for the past 12 years, I have never seen such a lack of effort to make conditions playable and general lack of personnel at the parks to assist in making the conditions playable. We play Friday Nights at Dyer Field. We've had one cancellation earlier in the season in which there was one 6' by 6' puddle near the pitchers mound. Last week, we arrived at the field approximately one hour prior to the game and began to warm up. It was evident that an attempt to rake had been made hours earlier, but had not been touched since around lunchtime and the ground needed to be raked again and possibly some dry clay/soil added. We found the worker and she stated she did not have the equipment to perform the task neccessary to get the field ready. No shovel and no rake. She did say that she had a wheelbarrow to transport some nearby dirt we found, but stated she was not going to perform the task, that we needed to do so ourselves. She was in casual clothes and I assumed did not want to be bothered. Needless to say, we found a rake and prepped the field ourselves. Then tonight (6/6), I drove by the field at 3:45 and found that there was no standing water and the field was in great shape, despite the cells of thunderstorms that had passed around earlier. All thunderstorm warnings and watches were cancelled by 4:00, no radar activity within Milwaukee County, let alone near Dyer Field yet ALL Recreation Activities were cancelled some few hours before the scheduled start of games. It seemed as if there was never even a general inspection performed of the individual fields and rather assumed that all the fields in the area must be bad. Had there been such a menial amout of time taken, there would be no reason to have the games cancelled at Dyer Field as the conditions were better than beyond playable. It's disappointing that even when the field conditions are slightly rough some 2-3 hours before the games and the rain has already passed that no attempts are made to make them playable. Having spent time in the industry, it takes two men, a rake with quickdry or kitty litter and 20 minutes of time. Seemingly this department only works 6am -2pm and too bad for the citizens if a rain drop falls after 2pm. Thanks for taking the time to read my rant. I realize this probably wont change and policies or procedures, but it would be nice to see a "modest" effort once in a while considering the amount of money that gets pumped into the Rec department through taxation and the collecting of fees for playing in these leagues. Respectfully, Lcbj68c (no I used my full name)
  3. Kenny and I just talked. It would be good to have a practice yet tonight if anybody is interested. Please reply quickly so we can make a decision. Everybody had planned to be there anyways. We should practice at 645-7ish and then hit an area bar to watch the Brewer's game. I went by the field again, it's in great shape. I'm writing an email to the rec department.
  4. Hotline says cancelled. "All MPS activities have been cancelled due to ongoing tornado warnings." Ay yi yi.
  5. I drove by the field at 3:20ish after work. No standing water anywhere. Batter's box had been raked, presumably after the hard down pour aroound 1pm. The last two rainbands passed to far to the north and south of Dyer Field. I suspect we will be okay. Here's hoping the recreation director physically inspects the field and just doesnt assume it's bad just because other areas may be bad.
  6. Rain on the radar pops up out of nowhere....:Sigh: Hey Nick, meet me at the field at 3:30 with a rake.
  7. Dumb, should have waited till the 6 inning.
  8. I think additional rain will stay away. However, winds are expected to be out of the SSW at 29 mph. That means, I'm hitting the ball over that little shack in right tonight.
  9. I'm not ready to get off my soapbox yet. 2 men, a wheelbarrow, and a rake, can accomplish in 30 minutes what the sun can't account for.
  10. Injury, yes. Suspension, no. The standard has been set at 4 games, not likely to affect his next start and if so, just pushes him back a day.
  11. The ONLY thing that is different about this situation is that it's June. I dont buy that argument. Game #60 counts the same as game #140. I'm all for retaliation in both circumstances.
  12. I'm surprised hardly anybody had a problem with this. If that had been Yost/McClung/Pujols, suddenly that move is stupid, the season compromised, and the other team got in their head? I dont get the two-face reaction and beginning to think when it comes to the Brewers it's all about Yost and nothing more.
  13. Congratulations. I liked the name Belle myself, but my wife said no.
  14. I did not see the slide from last night. Was it worse than the one that Yankee did in spring training?
  15. I'm not sure what happened before this pitch, but it looks like Tampa is getting tired of being the stepchild when they play in New England. Beat them in the box score before you try and beat them on the field? (edit: YouTube removed the video. Here's a video of the incident from mlb.com, provided by tomwopat in reply #23 --1992)
  16. I agree with your post, just dont get what you are getting at here?
  17. We need to add one big arm and we are fine. I still want to see what Suppan can do in September and especially October. I dont understand why everybody is so down on him and eager to cut him. Sheets 12M Free-Agent (Sabathia?) 12M Gallardo 600,000 Suppan 8M Parra 400,000 That's pretty solid.
  18. For the sake of my tax dollars, I sure hope they're not going to that extreme at the 140 milwaukee county parks we have! It's just softball!!! I think you misunderstood. They have some part of 9 hours to find 30 minutes to take care of a field. As somebody who used to help prep fields after a rain in Florida once in a while, it's not difficult to do. Mind you were are 5 feet about sea-level with no where for standing water to go, it's not that hard. However, judging from the effort those ladies put up last week at Dyer, where the team had to actually prep the field for play themselves, it's no surprise that the staff didnt lift a finger. And is it really the tax dollars at work or did we all pay a fee at the beginning of the season?
  19. Too trashed...really? Rain stopped around 10am, so grounds would have roughly 9 hours to rake and let dry, rinse and repeat. That's a travesty if the Parks and Rec department can't get that thing playable.
  20. I don't think one can or should draft a player because 'he's a leadoff hitter' or 'he's a cleanup hitter'. That kind of thing sorts itself out as he develops. Just like I think it's wrong (in most cases) to draft for a specific positional need, I don't think it's a good strategy to draft on a lineup projection. Both instances there have the same fundamental strategical flaw imho. I agree very much with this sentiment. If you have the tools to hit, where you hit in the lineup will sort itself out. Take the Seattle Mariners for example. If Jacoby Ellsbury is the best player/talent left on the board, do they pass on him because they already have a guy in Ichiro Suzuki that can play the leadoff role. Draft for talent, roles will sort themselves out.
  21. Was that over-sensationalization directed at me simply because I wondered out loud what BP said last season about the Rockies chances of making the playoffs?
