  1. Good call on that. I'll admit I was wrong there -- Seth did a great job settling down after that rough first inning. It's too bad that one bad pitch to Dunn really cost him, but I still think Suppan will eventually replace McClung once he gets back.
  2. I can definitely see why they call Volquez "Little Pedro" -- dude's stuff is absolutely wicked. Hopefully the Brewers can get something going against Stormy Weathers with the heart of the order coming up next inning. Riske just has to put up a 0.
  3. Volquez over 100 pitches now...let's see how long Dusty lets him pitch. 125? 130?
  4. How does a guy with 15 errors already this year manage to save the lead for the Reds? Incredibly frustrating stuff, but at least it looked like they were starting to put something together that inning against Volquez. Edit: I have a hard time faulting Prince's patience there -- he already showed a good eye in laying off two nasty pitches and thought he had something he could hit. The bat broke and killed the momentum of the ball. Kendall's "patience" has pretty much sucked lately, too, so I don't know how he would've had a better chance at getting a run in there.
  5. I hate broken bats. Ugh. Hopefully that wasn't the last chance they'll have to tie this up.
  6. How the heck did EE get that one?? Luckily everyone is safe for Prince, but I would've loved to see that one hop down the line.
  7. Wow, Volquez has made Hardy look silly all night. He's tied him up so bad on a couple of inside fastballs that he's fallen to one knee a couple times. Jeez...96 MPH fastball on the low outside corner. Impossible to do anything with that.
  8. Haha...Prince thought he popped that one foul. I don't know what's more funny -- the fact that Prince didn't know he hit it that well, or the fact that Brian Anderson has spent the past few minutes talking about how relieved he is that Prince wasn't showing anyone up. Get off the high horse, BA.
  9. Normally, the Brewers rake against aces, but struggle against pitchers they've never seen before (because, apparently advance scouting is a foreign concept). What happens when the Brewers face an ace that they've never seen before? Does it cause a rip in the time-space continuum?
  10. Nice bounceback inning for McClung. Hopefully this is like the Colorado game Bush started where he had a rough first and was great after that (and the team scored 11 runs... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif).
  11. I thought tie was supposed to go to the runner? It didn't even really look like that much of a tie...I thought it was pretty clear that he beat it out, but I guess it could've gone either way. I guess the good news is that the Brewers managed to get a couple of hits in that inning and were pretty patient.
  12. Well, the McClung Experiment was fun while it lasted...looks like we know who'll be losing their rotation spot.
  13. Braun and Weeks struck out swinging on 88-89 MPH fastballs right down the middle last night as well. True, but Braun and Weeks aren't hitting 40 points lower than they did last year and 50 points lower than their career averages. Those were bad at-bats, too, but Griffey's been hard to watch all year.
  14. Mets on the verge of a one-hit shutout against the Rockies and their 8th straight win. D-Backs crushing the Phillies...things are getting interesting in the East.
  15. Lineups from Witrado: 2B Craig Counsell SS J.J. Hardy LF Ryan Braun 1B Prince Fielder RF Corey Hart 3B Russell Branyan CF Mike Cameron C Jason Kendall P Seth McClung Kendall is 4-for-6 in his career against Volquez, back when he was with the A's and Volquez was struggling with the Rangers.
  16. I wouldn't call Randy Johnson a good pitcher this year. He and Griffey just need to retire, because it's getting sad watching them out there. It was pretty bad watching Griffey strike out swinging on David Riske's electric 88 mph fastball last night. Volquez strikes out a lot of guys, but he'll also walk a lot of guys if you let him. It'd be nice to see the Brewers be patient early, getting the first couple guys on and putting up some runs in the first inning.
  17. Cubs have a 3-0 lead thanks to a 2-run HR by Jim Edmonds. Harden so far: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K. Impressive debut so far, but the Giants aren't exactly Murderer's Row. Edit: 4-0 now.
  18. Something else that still kind of bothers me about last night's game -- while I'm not usually one to blame WOAHs at the plate on the hitting coach, it seems like Skaalen's philosophy has always been "keep doing what you've been doing and eventually you'll start hitting." While I don't have much of a problem with this philosophy when it comes to trying to break out of long slumps, it doesn't leave much room for making adjustments at the plate against individual pitchers. For example, last night against Fogg, it was pretty obvious he wasn't going to give the Brewers much to hit hard. FSN even interviewed Skaalen during the game, and he said something to the effect of "we are what we are, and there's not much we can do". Not exactly something you want to hear from your hitting coach when you're struggling to hit another junkballer with an 8 ERA.
  19. Harden throws a perfect game on 90 pitches. I'm calling it.
  20. Even after a tough loss, I feel like I need to balance out my vent thread post with a silver lining post. Regardless of how this weekend series with the Reds turns out, the Brewers will be one of the top contenders for the NL Wildcard at the break. How many people thought that would be possible when the team sunk into last place for a few days? After that sweep in Boston? Defensive troubles aside, this team is going to be fun to watch down the stretch this year. I'm thankful I have competitive baseball to watch to escape all the Brett Favre talk on the 4-Letter Network. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  21. It'd be nice to have a first baseman who's taller than Barry Sanders...someone who could stretch out and dig a ball out of the dirt every once and awhile. It'd also be nice to have a third baseman who could avoid shorthopping throws to said first baseman when he had time to plant his feet and throw.
  22. Ump must've had a dinner reservation or something. Anyway, go get 'em tomorrow against Volquez. He's been hittable his last few outings: July 6 vs WAS - 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K July 1 vs PIT - 5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K June 26 @ TOR - 4.1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 0 K Hopefully McClung can keep the walks down and the defense doesn't boot as many balls. They were one less error and a wild pitch away from winning this game, despite the crappy play.
  23. Cameron walks...let's get some late inning magic going. Hopefully Kendall can get Cameron to 2nd.
  24. Baseball's a funny game -- starting pitching match-ups are only a part of it. They've played pretty bad defense for most of the homestand and have struggled to do much hitting at all. Add in a bullpen blow-up here and there and it's not hard to see why they're in this situation. Still, considering how bad this team limped into the All-Star break last year, I'd be pretty happy with a winning homestand. I wouldn't even count on the best team in baseball history going 10-0 on a homestand -- it takes a ton of good fortune to do that.
