  1. Why can't the Dodgers ever hit scrub rookie pitchers making their first start?!?
  2. I think this might end up helping any potential Greinke trade market. With Oswalt still out there, teams looking for a low-end #1/high-end #2 were likely looking more at Oswalt than swinging a trade. He doesn't cost prospects, his pro-rated salary is cheaper than what's left for Greinke this year, and like it or not he's probably seen as more of a steady/known commodity. Oswalt's out of the picture now. No matter how bad things get in Philly, I don't think they trade Cole Hamels (especially now that Halladay is down for a month+), either. That pretty much leaves Greinke as the only low #1/high #2 out there for teams that want to make a push. If the Brewers want to go the trade route and they get lucky, the competition for Greinke will be enough to overcome concerns other teams might have about not getting any draft pick compensation for him.
  3. This thread's gone so far off the rails, it can't be saved. If you want to keep the Lawrie stuff going, feel free to start a new topic. Same goes for the Greinke contract talk.
  4. I'm a little surprised Ramirez is in the lineup after the nasty-looking welt on his elbow last night, but I suppose the alternative was Maysonet at SS and Ransom at 3B tonight. Hopefully Greinke can keep it going and the team can start building a bit of a winning streak. The offensive output over the past 5 games or so has been encouraging, even if it didn't always lead to runs. Edit: And now according to TH, Ramirez is a scratch with a bruised elbow. Ransom to 3B, Maysonet to SS. And Ramirez is talking like someone's getting hit tonight.
  5. Latest from McCalvy should satisfy some here: Looks like top two options right now are Fiers and Peralta.
  6. Diamondbacks fans will boo Braun because they think he cheated in the NLDS, but deify Luis Gonzalez and his totally not suspicious 57 HR for that 2001 World Series team. And it's not like they love admitted PED user Matt Williams there, either, or anything.
  7. Braun was far from the only player -- home or away -- who complained about the shadows. How much did the Braves complain after Sheets' 18-K game in the shadows? Given the choice between seeing the ball while they're hitting and seeing the ball while they're on defense, I imagine most players are going to choose seeing the ball when they're in the batter's box.
  8. McClendon was sent down because the bullpen was gassed in late April, they needed a fresh arm, and McClendon has options remaining. Who starts Tuesday depends more on how much the bullpen is needed this weekend than on how Fiers does in Nashville tonight. If they can avoid using Parra, he'll probably make at least the first Estrada-less start. If the bullpen keeps having to pitch half the total innings, then I could easily see them sending McClendon back down for Fiers. There's not much reason for them to make an announcement on who's starting Tuesday before Monday night.
  9. One of Axford's strongest 9ths of the year. Hopefully the day off will give everyone some much-needed rest, but wouldn't count out a move to also get a fresh arm in the mix (on top of also possibly replacing Estrada). It'd be swell to win two or three in a row at some point.
  10. Probably would have been more comfortable if the bullpen didn't have to pick up 8 innings, or even if the bullpen wasn't still reeling from the past couple nights. Lots of tired arms today.
  11. Romo is a really bad matchup for Weeks, and on the strikeout it looked like he guessed wrong on the pitch (both location and type) and got caught cheating. Pretty much swung through it before it even got to him like he was looking fastball for some reason. The double last night definitely doesn't mean he's "back," just like the HR last week in New York didn't mean he was back. I do think it's encouraging, though, that he's slowly having more success -- the double last night was his 4th hit in 5 games, and while it still isn't great, it's more success than he's been having in about a month.
  12. Signs of life from the offense tonight, even if Cain continued to strand runners. Only the third time this year Cain's allowed more than 3 runs in a start, tied a career high for most hits allowed, new career high for extra-base hits allowed (7). Feels like the Brewers should have more runs, but Cain really did a nice job pitching with RISP (like he has all year). At least they've been able to put together some very good ABs tonight against a tough pitcher.
  13. Opponents against Matt Cain with RISP this year before today: .116/.143/.209. Only 5 hits, 2 extra-base hits (a 2B and a HR). At least it's not just the Brewers.
  14. That's a pitch Weeks has been fouling off or flat-out missing for Weeks. Just one AB, but hopefully a sign he's getting his timing back.
  15. I can't fault Sedar on the send...Melky didn't even get his feet set, Posey wasn't blocking the plate so the throw needed to be perfect, and it was. If Aoki is a half step quicker he scores, but that's not a throw you expect even the best arms to make in that situation. Only reason it's an iffy send is because you have Braun coming up, but he's no guarantee if he's hurting.
  16. Also worth noting how much Lucroy has worn down in September the past two seasons, playing as much as he has. Last September he was at .188/.284/.359. .256/.307/.366 in August. He was actually pretty bad overall after May.
  17. Wait, are you saying Izturis is an above average player? Believe that was about Weeks.
  18. Better AB for Weeks than what we've been seeing. Didn't chase out of the zone, made good contact (not a weak grounder or infield flyball), 0-for-1 anyway. Process is important, results will follow.
  19. Not really true. 2 really bad starts, 6 okay-to-good starts heading into tonight. Going to be digging out of that ERA for awhile, though.
  20. Gomez batting 5th against a RHP isn't terrible. It's probably not ideal, but it's not terrible. .800+ OPS against lefties over the past year and change. Kottaras starting against a LHP is a valid complaint. Kottaras starting when "Lucroy is hot!!" isn't. Lucroy's been hot for over a month. A day off isn't going to hurt him.
  21. One thing to remember about possibly trading Greinke, though, are the new free agent compensation rules. In order to get comp picks, you need to make a qualifying offer on that player, and you can only make a qualifying offer if the player was on your team for the entire season. Any team that would trade for Greinke would be unable to get compensation picks for him, meaning the return for Greinke likely wouldn't be as great as it would have been under the old rules. In other words, they won't be getting the equivalent of what they gave the Royals to get him. If they wanted that, they would have had to deal him over the winter. Midseason blockbusters are pretty much dead, unless the team trading for the star player thinks they have a good chance at keeping him or you deal with a GM who isn't very sane.
  22. This is definitely the worst lineup the Brewers could have trotted out there. Moving Lucroy up has paid off so far today...his RISP numbers are going to drop eventually, but it's fun right now. It'll be interesting to see if RR keeps him there when Ramirez isn't resting. Maybe go Hart-CFer-Braun-Lucroy-Ramirez?
  23. A Brooks Conrad walkoff home run for his first hit would be awesome. Until it causes Green to be sent down for Gomez instead. But it'd be awesome for today.
