  1. Rickie's just trying way too hard at the plate right now. Looks like he wants to swing at everything that's close. That won't be how he breaks out of this.
  2. .843 OPS for Hart vs .594 OPS for Weeks True, but it's not like the strikeout complaints weren't there for Weeks when he was OPSing in the .800s. Nice to see Morgan beat out an infield single. Effort's still there for him, even if he's having trouble hitting the ball hard.
  3. It's sort of funny how much flak Weeks gets for striking out all the time, but Hart is immune. That's number 44 for him.
  4. Corey Hart. TOOTBLAN. That's the kind of stuff that convinces Buntin' Ron he needs to call for one after a leadoff double in the first inning. Also, nice to see Bob Davidson hasn't missed a beat in the "terrible ball/strike calls" department. Pavano threw 5 straight balls to Braun before that groundout on "3-2."
  5. Most of my optimism these days is rooted in my belief that the Brewers as we see them today won't be the same group of players we'll see a month from now. But I've always had more faith in Melvin & Co. than some. Most of the runs being given up lately have been by the Chulks and Dillards of the world, guys who'll be replaced before long. Guys like Conrad and Izturis won't be around all year, either. Then again, I never expected 90+ wins this year. I felt like this was an 85-win (give or take a couple in either direction) team, and as long as that's still plausible I'm not going to get too far down. Although it's been painful to watch at times this past week.
  6. Encouraging to see a scoreless, relatively-worry-free inning from Axford, at least.
  7. Because he just got an extension for having an even keel. Apparently thats on the top of the list for qualities you want in a MLB manager. As opposed to, well, managing. Should have kept Dale, at least he has some fire... I hate RR. Really? We had no clue. Good performance from the offense against Diamond. 9 baserunners in 5.1 innings..more success than Toronto and Anaheim had against him.
  8. how could that possibly be any worse then this garbage? 4-0 instead of 4-2. 2 hits instead of 6.
  9. By 1 and 2 games. It's May. The Angels are also looking up at Oakland, the Phillies and Red Sox are in last place, and the Diamondbacks are looking a lot like the Brewers. The standings are worthless right now.
  10. The Astros have actually been hitting. This is the Pirates batting order tonight against Verlander: .238, .256, .344, .211, .230, .195, .157, .158, .186. In OBPs: .256, .308, .405, .270, .253, .290, .232, .185, .286. That's just absurd. People here can't stop complaining about Weeks...the Pirates have 6 guys hitting like Weeks. In a row.
  11. Things could be worse. We could be stuck watching the Pirates every night.
  12. Replace Estrada with Greinke and this is a post from last June.
  13. The only thing less predictive than batting average after ~160 plate appearances are batting average splits after ~160 plate appearances.
  14. The Marlins have a little "V" gesture they do after a big play (they call it "Lo Viste," basically their Beast Mode salute). Lopez mocked the gesture after drilling Hanley.
  15. I laughed, and then I thought about it. The 2002 infield would have outhit this one by a country mile. I don't really know how they were defensively though. Who's pitching, the 2012 staff or the scrubs from 2002?
  16. Weeks et al need to start adapting to the fastball on the outside corner. It might not be a strike, but it is tonight. Doesn't help that Braun's trying to do way too much and has stranded a small village on the bases tonight.
  17. Not sure I like Marcum throwing 30+ pitches in an inning when he had an injury scare before the game, but long relief options are lacking after Wolf's start. I smell a postgame roster move.
  18. Yeah, the Brewers always struggle against Happ. Oh wait. And wait. And wait.
  19. Can't blame that inning on Weeks. Braun got a pitch to kill with the bases loaded and flat-out missed it.
  20. For what it's worth, Weeks is 13th in all of MLB in Pitches/Plate Appearance this year at 4.23. His 14.7% BB% (taking "he gets so many plate appearances" out of the equation) is also 13th in MLB. And since you asked, number of pitches for each of Weeks' walks this year: [pre]Apr 10 - 6 Apr 10 - 5 Apr 11 - 4 Apr 13 - 4 Apr 14 - 5 Apr 15 - 5 Apr 18 - 5 Apr 18 - 5 (IBB after a steal) Apr 21 - 6 Apr 22 - 6 Apr 24 - 6 Apr 28 - 6 Apr 28 - 5 Apr 29 - 5 Apr 30 - 6 Apr 30 - 5 May 1 - 4 May 4 - 4 May 4 - 5 May 5 - 6 May 8 - 6 May 9 - 4 May 11 - 4[/pre] So six 4-pitch BBs, nine 5-pitch BBs, eight 6-pitch BBs. So yes, they're all "six pitches or less," but very few players are going to see more than 6 pitches in an AB, let alone walk after 6+ pitches.
  21. Weeks' approach is why he gets deep into counts, not a "failure to put balls into play." He looks for pitches he can drive, and lays off ones he can't. It's an approach that has worked really, really well for him in his career. The downside is when his timing at the plate looks out of whack (like it is now), he has trouble squaring up on the pitches he is swinging at. Even now, though, the approach isn't changing -- he's rarely chasing pitches out of the zone (he's actually chasing less this year than he has over his career). For the most part, his swing rates are the same, he's just having trouble squaring up on pitches he's killed in years past. It seems like the strikeouts are a big reason why people are so frustrated with him right now. Would everyone honestly feel better about Weeks right now if he was swinging at the borderline pitches and/or grounding out weakly earlier in the count instead of striking out?
  22. Weeks is going to be hitting second tomorrow because there aren't very many (if any) better options. Morgan's been worse. Aoki isn't going to see as many pitches per AB. They could put Lucroy back up there, but then people will complain when Weeks is hitting 6th and leaves Braun/Hart on base. Things with Weeks could be worse. The fact that he's still carrying an OBP north of .300 (granted, an OBP in Yuni territory) is pretty incredible considering he's hitting .1whatever. Doesn't help that he's been jobbed on a couple of called third strikes the past few nights, but those 50/50 calls are less likely to go your way when you aren't hitting well.
  23. Weird thing about this start was that up until the ball Lowrie hit that Hart botched (and maybe the ball that bounced off the Crawford Boxes that Braun terribly misjudged), Wolf wasn't even getting hit that hard. Just singles and 16-hoppers up the middle. Frustrating start to the game. At least Norris is a guy they've hit before, even if it typically takes until the 5th inning for him to wear down.
