    Why would this shock anybody? He works for the same company that broke this story in the first place even though it was supposed to be confidential until the appeal because they had to break the story before anyone else. I have a really, really hard time blaming ESPN for breaking the original story. They had sources that gave them information (Braun failed a test), they reported that information, and it was true. Brewers fans have every right to be upset at MLB for leaking the info, and probably with the way ESPN handled follow-up stories, too (anchors saying he tested positive for steroids, saying he's already been suspended, etc.). But you can't fault ESPN for breaking the news. There isn't a news source in the country that would have sat on that information and done nothing with it.

    I saw a few people say it last night (maybe FanGraphs and somewhere else) that considering what the Nats paid for Gio Gonzalez and what the Reds paid for Mat Latos, the Yankees got a bargain for Pineda -- granted, Montero is a better prospect than anyone in those other two deals, but New York only gave up one guy they're likely to miss, as opposed to two or three. It will be interesting to see what happens with Pineda's numbers after moving from Safeco to the Bronx launching pad, though. He's overpowered right-handed hitters, but Yankee Stadium is heaven for LHB, while Safeco was much more forgiving. It wouldn't surprise me to see Pineda struggle with giving up home runs at home. As for the M's, Montero can really hit. The sooner they forget about him catching, the better. Stick him at DH, hope Smoak has a fully healthy year at first, watch Ackley get better, and suddenly you have the makings of a promising young lineup. Losing Pineda could hurt, but they'll still have Danny Hultzen likely making his debut this year, and guys like James Paxton and Taijuan Walker coming up in the next few years. Having that many good pitchers coming up through the system probably made it easier for Jack Z to trade Pineda to improve the offense. Then again, you could argue that the Mariners would have been better off keeping Pineda and improving the offense by signing Prince Fielder, but maybe Jack Z got tired of waiting for him like everyone else.

    Pettitte's going to be an interesting case. On one hand, you'll have the PED moralists trying to keep him out. On the other, he's a Yankee and is like the Jack Morris of the 2000s (some pretty average seasons, but big-game reputation on World Series winners). I actually think Pettitte has a better HOF resume than Morris (neither are really HOFers to me), but I will fully admit that I'm probably too young to remember Morris, while I can recall most of Pettitte's career.

    Considering Darvish's ERAs before the ball change were 1.82, 1.88, 1.73 and 1.78, I don't think they're too worried. ;-) His ERA did drop to 1.44, but he also cut his BB/9 and rose his K/9 from the year before, so it wasn't all batted-ball effects. As far as Aoki goes, it seems pretty clear that the Brewers only see him as a reserve type if they're only going to offer $1.5MM a year. It'd be a total commitment of $4MM this year when you factor in the posting fee, which seems fine enough. I do wonder if the Brewers would be more willing to add more money in later years of the deal, backloading it like many of the contracts they've handed out this winter.

    Sorry, that's not going to happen. We have discussions like this when it comes to the team playing poorly, too. Supporting the team and players 100% isn't a requirement to post at BF.net. People can express their opinions any way they wish as long as it's within the guidelines of the forum. I think Brewers employees and families know that these are opinions of individual people, not necessarily indicative of the fanbase as a whole.

    That is the worst case scenario, that Braun has been doing it for his whole career and will now stop to avoid a potential longer or lifetime suspension. The Brewers then end up paying him for much diminished performance over the next decade. If Braun was doing something his entire career, he likely would have been popped before this. He's one of the guys who's been constantly tested every step of the way, from rookie ball to the big leagues. Braun's in a tough spot now (whether or not he deserves to be is TBD) where any decreased production in 2012 and beyond will lead to "SEE! HE'S NO GOOD WITHOUT THEM!" talk. Even if he's "guilty," Braun and the player's union should be absolutely pissed that this was allowed to get out ahead of time. Stuff like this is why the league doesn't announce anything until the appeal is heard.

    News coming out that the Marlins' offer was actually richer than the Halos' (and they have the added benefit of no state income tax in FL). Maybe proof that it wasn't all about the money with Pujols -- perhaps he just didn't want to be in St. Louis anymore. With TLR gone, it's at least a possibility.

    Cardinals making it sound like they're not interested in a big splash now that Pujols is gone -- like the Brewers and Fielder, any offer they made was a "special case" since he was likely worth more to them than anyone else. Like others have said, in the short-term they should be fine. Berkman moves over to first, but with Allen Craig likely to miss the start of the season, they might need to go out and sign a corner outfielder. Someone like Carlos Beltran could make sense, and they can pretty much pay whatever Rafael Furcal wants to return. It stinks from the Cards' perspective, but I have a feeling they've been preparing for this day once last season started and Pujols still wasn't under contract. Re-upping Berkman was a nice insurance policy, Freese should be healthy for a full season, and they still probably have one of the best pitching staffs in the division. They'll still be a winner without Pujols.

    The Pirates declined a $3 million option on Ronny Cedeno to give Barmes $5.5 million a year, $11 million total. Barmes is a bit better than Cedeno, but not enough to warrant that much more of a commitment, IMO. That's a contract that would make more sense for a team like the Brewers, who would've been making a clear upgrade with Barmes. It's also possible that this signing isn't a money thing -- Barmes really likes Clint Hurdle from their days in Colorado. Can't blame a guy for going to work for a boss he really liked, even if they're not going to contend.

    Outstanding is probably a little strong to describe his defense, but he's capable in CF. Even if/when he has to move out of the position, he has the arm to be good in RF if that's where the Dodgers want him. This is probably an overpay, but the Dodgers were in a position where they had to do something positive to get the fanbase believing in the future again. He wasn't going to be a FA until next year, but at least with Kemp locked up there's a bit of cost certainty for whoever ends up buying the team. He has the talent to put up a few more seasons like he had this year, but he's also admitted that his 2010 numbers were down because he checked out in the second half. The new coaching staff in 2011 refreshed his focus (Davey Lopes gets a lot of credit for Kemp's improvement), but how long until that wears off, especially if the Dodgers stay stuck in neutral for another couple years? That's what would worry me if I was a Dodger fan, but once the franchise gets back on its feet I doubt they'd have to worry too much about him being an albatross.

    In 2015, the Phillies will have over $60 million owed to just Ryan Howard, Cliff Lee, and Jonathan Papelbon. Even for a team with a mammoth payroll, that has the potential for a lot of dead money. The Howard extension is looking bad already and it doesn't even kick in until next season. This seems just as insane as the Madson contract rumor, especially for a team whose problem down the stretch was offense. They don't want to risk the big money on upgrading SS with Reyes, but they'll throw $50 million at a reliever? $50 million is just too much to give to a guy who pitches three outs a game, even if you highly value the last three outs. Charlie Manuel doesn't seem like the type that would use him outside of the 9th inning, either.

    That's the thing, though -- TLR has never called Motte his closer. Since the Cards dumped Franklin, he hasn't called any reliever his "closer" and has lectured the media whenever they referred to Salas or Motte as "the closer."

    I was unbelievably disappointed that I had to miss the majority of this game due to work. Luckily, I was able to at least catch the last few innings and listen to Uecker's call live. I feel good for a lot of the guys on the team, but I don't know if I feel better for anyone but Ueck. He deserved at least one more deep postseason run behind the mic, and he's finally getting it. Still work to do, but this is definitely sweet right now.

    It already seems like the national media is trying to blow this story up, which seems a little odd because it's been pretty clear that's where things were headed, even if he was dodging the question for most of the year. If Braun's reaction is any indication, it's far from a distraction. The guys understand it's a business.

    Truly a sad day for Brewers baseball. Of course, there's always hope the Ricketts family hires someone like Jim Bowden or Ed Wade (once he's fired in Houston) to replace Hendry. They'd probably be better off poaching one of Tampa's young FO minds, but with the Cubs the pressure might be there to hire someone who's "done it before."

    Trying to draw a throw to make sure Prince scores? Kemp cut the ball off in pretty shallow CF, so Fielder scoring was no guarantee.

    The Miller Park thing might hold more weight if the Cardinals could actually, you know, beat the Brewers in St. Louis. The Brewers are 20-11 there since 2008. I suppose they're stealing signs in Busch, too?
