  1. How many other teams have gotten to play 2 series against the Pirates? Also, what's the OPS+ against the pitching staff this season? This early in the season, the only other team that's played the Pirates twice is Los Angeles. In those 7 games, the Dodgers scored 5, 3, 10, 0, 6, 5, and 9 runs, which is an average of 5.43 runs per game (they went 4-3 in those series). The Pirates won't have another repeat opponent until the middle of May when they play the Reds again.
  2. I'm not sure what this post has to do with Melvin. This isn't a vent thread, and the reason why this thread has stayed open so long is because there's still quite a few posts that have clearly been well thought out. Let's keep it that way instead of posting one-liners that are likely to be hidden in the future.
  3. From what I remember of that time period last season, Melvin did put in a claim on Doug Davis and seemed to have legitimate interest in finishing a deal, but it couldn't come together in time to get a deal done within that 72-hour window. Not exactly a high-profile move like the previous summer, but it was pretty widely believed that the Brewers didn't have what it took to get Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee. Hoffman was claimed by the Giants, but I don't remember there being any serious negotiations reported in that scenario. Granted, in hindsight it might've been a good idea to let Hoffman go, get a piece or two from him, and thereby avoid signing him to the extension that looks so bad after Hoffman's April, but we don't know what the Giants offered before Doug pulled him back.
  4. The Weeks stuff would've made for a really good off-day feature, but I agree it doesn't make much sense to focus on Weeks in regards to last night's game. Talk about Gomez having to leave early, talk about Bush not getting support for a good start again, talk about the fact that the Brewers as a team haven't been this cold offensively since 2005, etc. I can't wait to see what Witrado's recaps of the Dodgers series are going to look like. Those are always fun.
  5. 2 @ SD 1-1 3 @ LAD 2-1 3 @ ARI 1-2 3 vs. ATL 1-2 3 vs. PHI 1-2 2 @ CIN 2-0 2 @ PIT 1-1 3 @ MIN 1-2 3 vs. HOU 2-1 3 vs. NYM 2-1 1 @ FLA 1-0 15-13 Tiebreaker: 6 + 9 + 2 = 17
  6. I wish I could bet on things like "Macha will excuse Suppan's performance by saying he's just not used to pitching out of the bullpen." Davis had really crappy luck, Suppan has been giving up some rockets.
  7. I have to admit, I'm interested to see if Gomez and Escobar can take advantage of the huge ballpark. Here's to hoping Sharpie can build on his last start and go 7 innings or so.
  8. Now who gets the 9th?What would make sense: CoffeyWhat will probably happen: Hawkins I wouldn't be opposed to a closer-by-committee strategy, but it's not something I'd trust Macha to do well.
  9. Yeah, if these weren't the Pirates, they'd probably have Wolf in a much bigger hole by now. This hasn't been one of Wolf's best starts...even the outs have been rockets. Here's to hoping the offense can break through against Karstens this inning.
  10. Definitely a shock, but thankfully it sounds like a routine procedure (or at least as routine as heart surgery can be). Knowing people that have gone through heart surgeries before, though, the recovery is typically more worrisome than the actual procedure. Here's to hoping Ueck can make a quick recovery, but he doesn't push himself to come back before he's ready.
  11. Dear Doug, Don't forget what you said in hawing's signature this time. God bless, crewcrazy
  12. As an aside, I think quite a few posts in this thread are an example of how we can be negative without flat-out venting. Kudos to everyone. On the topic of Suppan, I think the fake spring training "competition" still has me sour. If the Brewers are that worried about injuries taking their toll on the rotation again, they still need Parra and Narveson stretched out enough to fill in when needed. I would hope that the Brewers start giving Parra and Narveson a start here and there when the fifth starter is needed. It's something that could be done without officially removing Suppan from the rotation if the front office still refuses to admit that he doesn't have it anymore, I think, while appeasing the fans who really don't want to see Suppan out there every week. It's not an ideal situation, but it jives with Melvin's preseason comments that he doesn't see the 5th spot being held by one pitcher all year.
  13. Jeff Suppan: 9 ER in 9.1 IP Manny Parra: 0 ER in 6.2 IP (to this point) I know, small samples, but I'm just sayin'.
  14. Like my mom always told me, "If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all. Unless it's about Jeff Suppan." Hopefully the bullpen can put up a few zeroes and the Brewers can at least make the end of this game entertaining.
  15. After seeing him punch the bench a few times after striking or popping out this year, I'm completely shocked to hear this news.
  16. I haven't been able to listen to the actual audio of the broadcasts for most of this season, but is it fair to say that it sounds like Bill isn't a huge fan of Escobar?
  17. I have to say, I love the presence of Dave Bush's Beard in the graphics. Hopefully the bullpen will let Bush get his first win tonight. He should be 2-0 right now.
  18. The MLBPA makes sure that information is easily accessible for the players -- I believe there's even a hotline for players to call if they're not sure, and the people on the other end will look up the supplements' active ingredients and tell them if it would cause a positive test. Pleading ignorance in your appeal isn't going to get you out of a suspension. Edit: Invader beat me by a few seconds. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  19. Per Jon Heyman's Twitter, it's Edinson Volquez.
  20. Playing 20 questions at this point, and Craig Calcaterra has a few updates:
  21. I find it hard to blame a loss like this on the pitching when your offense only manages 4 hits against Livan Hernandez. Ryan Zimmerman saw more pitches than Braun and Fielder combined today. Just one of those ugly games where nothing really went right. Go get them tomorrow, Sharpie. I'm not too optimistic, but the last time I went into the series finale assuming a sweep they actually won, so who knows.
  22. The Nationals actually aren't a bad offensive team, but I fear what the reaction would be if the Brewers were to drop this game. Yo could really use a solid start, so hopefully it's tonight. The Brewers have historically roughed up Lannan, if I remember correctly.
  23. That's my hope. Zambrano is racking up the pitch count early, so there may be a chance to jump on the middle relievers.
  24. Well, on the bright side, at this pace if he only pitches 5 innings, he'll only give up 5 runs.
  25. It's Coffey Time! Another solid outing from Wolf...I'll take it. At least it's taken until the last game of the series for Pujols to do something.
