  1. I have to say I like the change in the National's road jerseys, which now have "Washington" across the front...very cool nod to the Senators of old.
  2. The only team with a worse team ERA than Washington is Cleveland, and we saw what kind of an effect the Tribe's pitching had on the Brewer bats. The Nats' bullpen might even be worse than Cleveland's. I type all of this hoping that this post doesn't cause the Nats' bullpen to put up 10 consecutive scoreless innings this series or something.
  3. The problem is that their offense is far from pitiful...they have a few guys who can really hurt you if you throw meatballs, as Villa's been prone to lately. I would've preferred to see Dillard get the start, but perhaps they'll just piggyback the two.
  4. At least they split the season series if the score holds up. Fortunately, the Cards ran into the Phillies buzzsaw over the weekend and face the Dodgers starting tomorrow. Amazingly, this team is still within striking distance. I can see why Melvin is reportedly looking for relievers, too...I wouldn't be happy about breaking the bank for a stopgap starter considering the current state of the team, but a reliever that would allow Burns to return to Nashville might not be a bad idea, depending on the cost.
  5. Here's to hoping Looper can duplicate the results of his last start. I won't be able to follow along very closely today, but I'll be checking the score as much as I can. Hopefully Lowe struggles with keeping his sinker down, or they at least get to him before he figures it out and the shadows start to have an effect.
  6. Hey, perhaps the sky isn't falling after all. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif It'd be great to get a win tomorrow and head into the Nationals series with some momentum.
  7. Back in late May/early June when the Swine Flu scare was at its peak in New York, the Mets had a scare when they thought Carlos Beltran and John Maine might've caught it. I believe it ended up being just the "normal" flu, but it had people in baseball genuinely worried. It's definitely a real threat, with how many players come through visiting clubhouses during the year.
  8. Well, the Brewers were able to knock Hanson around quite a bit in his first big league start, although he did get his fair share of K's in that game and has been living up to his megaprospect hype ever since. Hopefully the Brewers can give him his first Big League loss, and they can finally get Yo some offense.
  9. True, and I believe they have some contracts coming off the books, too. Still, if a desperate big market team with a need in the outfield (like say, the Mets) comes along and offers the Holliday/Boras combo a ridiculous deal, the Cards could get outbid. In the case of the Mets giving him a huge deal, it might doubly screw up the Cards' plans since the Mets seem likely to finish in the bottom half of the league and have their first rounder protected. In the short-term, though, I guess I can't fault the Cardinals for trying to capitalize on what might be Pujols' career year if he continues at this pace. He's probably only got a few more prime seasons left, so they might as well try to win while they can. Even if the Cards think Wallace will end up being a stud someday, they probably couldn't afford to wait for him to fully develop.
  10. If the Cards do go through with this trade, the irony would be that it seems likely to play out the same way the Sabathia situation did with the Brewers. He might help them get to the playoffs, but he's likely to test the free agent waters, and there's been some speculation the Yankees would be interested. If I remember correctly, there were also stories during last year's All-Star break about Holliday and his dad being huge Yankees fans while they were growing up and dreaming about the day Matt would play in Yankee Stadium. So, if St. Louis wants to give up Brett Wallace for an outfielder with an .800 OPS that's likely to bolt instead of for Roy Halladay, I say let them. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Edit: CheezWiz, Wallace is generally seen as more of a polished hitter than Gamel (hits for average and power, but with much better plate discipline) but doesn't have the "look" of a prototypical third baseman according to some. He's not exactly built like Prince or anything, but I imagine going to an AL team will help him if he can't stick at third. He's supposed to be a better athlete than his body type would indicate, though. Here is a short MLB.com scouting report.
  11. What are the "great FA acquisitions" made by Friedman? Pat Burrell? What are the great trades aside from the fluky Garza-for-Young deal (great move by Freidman & Co., but I don't really give him much credit for Steve Phillips handing him Scott Kazmir either -- not sure if Friedman was GM at the time, either). While I definitely agree that Freidman & the Rays have been run very, very well of late, I just don't see this glaring gap btw. Melvin & Friedman. I honestly don't have the time at the moment, but I will look more into that comparison later. Friedman's only been Tampa's GM since 2006, so it's hard to credit him with drafting much more than Evan Longoria and David Price (the consensus #1 overall pick that year). We'll see what Tim Beckham turns into -- he's still only 19 and playing his first season of full-season ball IIRC. What you can't credit Friedman for is the drafting of B.J. Upton, Carl Crawford, Jeff Niemann, Andy Sonnanstine, and James Shields. He's made some solid moves (trading Aubrey Huff for Ben Zobrist, the Young/Garza deal), but he's also made some moves that look bad in hindsight (giving up early on Jorge Cantu, giving away Edwin Jackson for outfield depth). In short, he's just like every other good GM out there.
  12. Nope, that'd be the Rays, who picked him up on a minor league deal a week after the Brewers released him. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  13. Some who follow the Red Sox expect Duncan to head straight to AAA Pawtucket, since there really isn't any PT for him in Boston right now. The reaction on their end of the deal is similar to what I imagine the general feeling here would be like if the Brewers managed to trade Bill Hall for a lukewarm body: http://firebrandal.com/2009/07/22/red-sox-trade-lugo-to-cardinals-for-duncan.html
  14. The season's been declared "over" so many times already this year that it's hard for me to get too worked up about a 3-4 road trip. For me, the sweep in Minnesota was tougher to take, as was the Colorado/White Sox homestand and the 4th of July series loss to the Cubs. It looks like the bats are finally starting to heat up a little bit, but Suppan and McClung let the offense down a bit today. Yeah, the Braves are bringing some tough pitching to town, but the Brewers knocked Hanson around the last time they saw him (albeit in an eventual loss) and beat Vazquez and Jurrjens (who's arguably better than Lowe). It's frustrating to see the team tread water, but since no one seems interested in winning this division, I'll keep watching with the belief that this is a team still in contention for a playoff spot.
  15. Tough to win when your starter gives you a performance like Suppan did, but I can't get too hard on him since he's had some solid outings lately when the rest of the rotation's been struggling to last 6 innings. Disappointing, but far from the end of the world.
  16. The ball from Jones literally hit foot 21 of that 21-foot wall. The MLB.com cameraman seemed to think it was gone off the bat.
  17. This seems like a good time to remind everyone that the Pirates blew a 4-run lead with 2 outs in the 9th against Philadelphia a little while ago. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  18. Well that livens things up a bit. Credit the ump for not throwing anyone out after that. Still not a fan of intentionally putting guys on, but considering the game situation it's probably not going to hurt as much.
  19. My favorite part of this game has been watching the concessions guys behind home plate just chilling in the first row for a few pitches because there's no one to sell concessions to. In games like this, it's the little things like that which prevent me from ripping my hair out. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  20. I've been away for most of the weekend, but I just have to pop in and say that I'm happy that the Brewers were able to get Felipe Lopez for two guys who ultimately weren't in the team's plans. Gillespie wasn't going to advance much further than AAA in the Brewers' system and Mercedes seems like a reliever at best. It's a little disappointing that Doug wasn't able to get a pitcher, but it makes sense when you consider the recent reports that the Diamondbacks have shown interest in negotiating an extension with Davis and they just signed Garland. I do think this move shows that Melvin (thankfully) thinks there's still hope for the Brewers' playoff chances, and at the same time this isn't one of the dreaded instances of making a move just for the sake of making a move. Even if Lopez is seen as a bit of an unsavory character, at least he'll be a decent bat that'll only be around for a few months.
  21. I really can't wait for Edwin Encarnacion to leave the Reds. I was happy to see Adam Dunn and Javier Valentin leave, but EE seems to be an even bigger pain in the butt. pebadger's right, this wouldn't be a GAB game if it wasn't interesting until the very end.
  22. It's really frustrating to see Looper benefit so much from run support this year, but still being unable to get through 6 innings. Reminds me of the start he had in Florida earlier this year, when he got that huge lead and couldn't get through the 5th to get a win.
  23. I think it's safe to say the Home Run Derby didn't mess up Prince's approach at the plate. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  24. Nice play to end the inning, but they were probably lucky that it was such a slow runner. Braun's throw wasn't all that great, but at least Kendall was able to snag it and run over for the tag in time.
  25. Could've sworn I typed Jim, but thanks for the catch, TLB. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Perhaps I was just in shock that Yost was legitimately mentioned, although he's been rumored for a job or two in the past year...I remember there being serious speculation about Jack Z looking at him for the Seattle job.
