  1. I read that and winced, too, but otherwise the ESPN article is very, very good. It's a little long, but if you have some time to kill it's worth it. I also hope he does well in San Diego...by all accounts he seems like a great guy, and it's very cool to see Tony Sr. so excited about the deal. It's a deal that's brought a lot of excitement for a San Diego fanbase that hasn't had much to cheer about this year. Gerut hasn't panned out so well for the Brewers, but it was a deal that I think had to be made if Tony was ever going to have success.
  2. Not only that, but there's no name (or screen name, even) attached to the article. No place for comments after the article, no e-mail address to reach the author, no way to get in contact with anyone to ask about the validity. It's on a site no one's ever heard of before that never really posts any original breaking news stories. The list is plausible, but it does look like they just took everyone who's been busted already or named in the Mitchell Report and sprinkled in random fringe players and other guys who have been suspected but never proven.
  3. Way too many big name players for me to think that it's a legitimate list. It's like someone went through every team's 2003 roster and picked out three or four top players from every team, and then threw in a few lesser known players to make it seem credible. If you remember the Mitchell Report hoopla, there was a similar list that was "leaked" online before the report came out, and that list only had a few players that were actually listed in the report. People like to put hoaxes like this up on their website in order to increase traffic. I can't imagine the hit numbers that website is pulling in, because I've been to a few other message boards where this topic has come up and they've all posted the same link.
  4. I actually have relatives that used to live in Janesville and worked at that plant that closed. Luckily, they got transferred to another plant in Michigan before the one in Janesville was closed. There was a bit of a scare when GM started closing plants left and right in Michigan, but they've survived the first cutdowns. They're not out of the woods yet, since they've apparently been told there will be more cuts near the end of the year if things don't improve soon. They have friends back in Janesville that are in situations RoCo described...being laid off months before retirement, applying for local Wal-Marts and not being able to even get a job there due to the flood of over-qualified applicants, etc. It's a tough situation all around, and in small towns dominated by a single industry like that you never really realize how bad it can get until that industry shuts down.
  5. If I had to guess, the poll that followed Rogers' column was probably overrun by White Sox fans who have a bigger distaste for the guy than most other fans. As far as the idea goes, he's a pain in the neck, but he's still one of their best pitchers and they'd be in even worse shape without him this year.
  6. Don't look now, but the Brewers have won 4 of 6 and have the division lead back to themselves. Pretty good night, huh? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. Wow, what a bomb by J.J. into the seats above the bullpen. I believe that's only the second home run Nieve has allowed so far since joining the Mets.
  8. Oh man, bad luck double play...Prince absolutely smoked that one. Solid play by Murphy at first there.
  9. Whenever they're on ESPN, I tend to watch the national feed. I'm a glutton for bad announcing, but I do like to hear what the national guys are saying about the club.
  10. Nieve has faced the Brewers before as a member of the Astros, throwing a total of 9 innings in 2006, allowing 8 hits (3 of them home runs) and 4 runs, with 9 strikeouts and 4 walks. Obviously a tiny tiny sample size, but at least it's not someone making their big league debut. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

  12. I had totally forgotten about Sheffield coming back to Milwaukee. That'll be fun...I wonder if ESPN will pick up on why it'll be raining boos. On another note, I wasn't that upset with Gamel not playing every day, but it's starting to get a little worrisome that he's not playing every day at third. Counsell should be the one getting sporadic starts here and there, not Gamel.
  13. Today, ESPN ran an episode of Outside the Lines focusing on the tough times small towns are having keeping Little League programs afloat given the tough economy. They also included a report on how well the Beloit Snappers are doing, despite the economy and the poor play of the team. I thought all three pieces were pretty well done. Videos of the stories embedded below. Did anyone else catch this today? Part 1: Little League Parents in Beloit Part 2: Success of the Beloit Snappers Part 3: Janesville's Little League diamond project
  14. After going 0-5 today against Minnesota, Colby Rasmus is hitting .263/.308/.442, translating to a .750 OPS. He's been playing well lately after a slow start, although he's had a cold week or so. I still think he has the best shot to win the award, especially if the Cards end up winning the division. McGehee would definitely be a surprise, though...if he can catch up to Rasmus' home run total things might get really interesting.
  15. Apparently if you ask ESPN, they're doing a Cards/Mets game tomorrow night. They flashed a graphic of their upcoming games of the week and had the Cardinals listed on it instead of the Brewers. Woohoo! Free off day!
  16. "They don't pay me to win every day, just two out of three..." -- Casey Stengel Today was a clunker, but winning two out of three against a main rival for a playoff spot at this point was big after another disappointing Minnesota series. The Mets are coming into town very late tonight due to playing on Sunday Night Baseball, and half their team is on the DL. Beat up the guys not named Johan Santana and I have a good feeling about winning another series to close out the homestand.
  17. True, their offense is better, but the Brewers' starters have been consistently better than Philly's starters this year, so they can probably afford to not score as much and still win more (and coming into today the Brewers did have the higher winning percentage and would be leading the NL East). If the league and division is awful, it helps the Brewers in their goal of making the playoffs. I guess I'm having a hard time understanding how that's a bad thing...I'd gladly take another playoff appearance, even if it's in a perceived weak league.
  18. Yeah, I do. Like I said, there are teams also in the playoff hunt that have a lot of question marks in their rotation. As an example, Philadelphia is leading their division and they have one starter with an ERA under 4. The Brewers don't need to have the best pitching in the league to make the playoffs, just a serviceable staff which is what they're working with now. Am I opposed to an upgrade? Not at all...I'd like to see one as much as the next guy, but I don't think it'll be the end of the world if Melvin can't find a significant upgrade. As for Vazquez, he didn't exactly come cheap for the Braves -- they had to give up Tyler Flowers, another very good catching prospect of theirs that's posted a career .898 OPS in the minors, and a few other prospects. Vazquez was a 4-for-2 trade (Atlanta also got Boone Logan if I remember correctly), so he didn't exactly come at a small price for them.
  19. Suppan's gone at least 5 innings in 12 of his 15 starts, and hasn't had a sub-5 inning start since May 26. Looper's gone at least 5 innings in 13 of his 15 starts, with the only two sub-5 inning starts coming this month, and he's gone at least 6 innings in 10 of his 15 starts. McClung's not stretched out so it was probably unreasonable to think he could go more than 4 or 5 innings yesterday, and Burns didn't pitch too bad in his first career start. Teams like Philadelphia and New York are having a harder time finding good pitching and they're also in the playoff hunt. The pitching hasn't been good in June, true, but for the most part this year they've been a very solid group (as expected).
  20. The second inning has been tough to watch so far, but I hesitate to get on Suppan too much considering he was carrying the rotation for awhile. Hopefully he can get out of this with only 2 (or less) runs scoring.
  21. Gamel leading off is certainly a surprise, but with Counsell out of the lineup he's a better alternative than Hart against a righty. He's typically patient and getting him a chance for an extra AB today will probably be beneficial in the long run.
  22. http://www.fangraphs.com/lgraphs/290627108_Giants_Brewers_132686967_lbig.png That's a thing of beauty.
  23. If it does turn out to be Perez and Wallace for DeRosa the Indians made out big time. Wallace is a stud.If the Cards were going to deal someone like Wallace as a PTBNL, I would expect it to be for Holliday, not DeRosa, but that's just me. Wallace would be a coup for Shapiro..he'd be building up quite a collection of young bats.
  24. If I had to guess, maybe he wanted to save Gerut as a left-handed pinch hit bat just in case the game went into extras? Kendall seemed like an odd choice to pinch run, but after using Cat earlier in the game I think Gerut and Kendall may have been the only guys left on the bench and he wanted to save the better hitter for a possible pinch hit appearance...I could be wrong, though.
  25. My guess is that Schumaker stays at second, and DeRosa starts at third for them, replacing Joe Thurston/Brian Barden. They've been getting horrible production from third all year.
