  1. Brewer draftee Khris Davis went 1-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Cal State Fullerton's 10-6 loss to Arkansas at the College World Series today. They'll play in an elimination game on Monday. Smith has pitched really well, but as I expected, Contreras has been baffling the offense so far. Frustrating that they only have one hit.
  2. Plenty of time to crawl back into this one, but the bullpen will need to be the team MVP today for it to happen. They showed they can score 7 runs yesterday...here's to hoping they can do it again today.
  3. Shades of the Hendrickson game against Minnesota, where he wasn't able to record a single out in the first inning. Now that was a brutal start.
  4. That's a little harsh, IMO...Hendrickson was a junkballer who couldn't get guys out. Parra's got good stuff but can't control it. Jorge de la Rosa seems like a better comparison to me.
  5. Well, the good news is that Suppan went pretty deep last night, so the bullpen should be in good shape for today. On a side note, I like Karros' commentary so far. Pretty astute observations on Parra right there, and he seemed to know a lot when Telly interviewed him last night.
  6. I get the feeling Contreras' inconsistent deliveries are going to give the Brewers fits this afternoon. Hardy looked really confused once he dropped down to a sidearm slot.
  7. I'll echo the sentiments that TH seems to be very dedicated and works harder than most beat writers out there. I also give him credit for calling a spade a spade sometimes...there are a lot of beat writers that won't write a single negative word about a team for fear of losing access. TH gets just as frustrated as the rest of us with this team sometimes, which leads me to believe that he wants to see a winner just as badly as we do. However, I do feel like he's struggling to adapt to the changing face of journalism, as many newspaper guys are right now. I love Kaukauna's analogy of TH jumping into the pool, nearly drowning, and being too afraid to step near that pool ever again. While it is dangerous to buy into everything you read on the Internet, it seems to me that he fails to see that there are levels of credibility when it comes to Internet rumors. Any bozo can sign up for a blogspot account and make a post saying the Brewers are close to acquiring Alex Rodriguez for Bill Hall and Jeff Suppan, but that person doesn't have the credibility of Brian or a few of the other insiders we have here. With so many of the old school newspaper guys, credibility seems to be be all-or-nothing. My biggest concern is TH's condescending attitude is rubbing off on Witrado, based on the arrogance he's shown in his live chats. It's frustrating to submit a few well-thought-out questions to the live chats, only to see them pick out the questions asking if J.J. Hardy is married and other dumb questions that they can laugh at and reply sarcastically.
  8. No thread so far by pretendastronaut so let's just get something up to discuss the game. If PA has graphics for today, I can edit them into this post later. Today the Crew looks to ensure a series win over the ChiSox, and they'll be playing in front of a national audience (well, at least those not being subjected to Mets/Yankees) on FOX. It'll be Manny Parra (3-7, 6.86 ERA) going up against Jose Contreras (1-5, 6.45 ERA). Both pitchers have struggled to this point, and look to rebound with strong starts. Today's lineups, from FoxSports.com's Game Trax: Name AVG HR RBI SB 1. S Podsednik, LF .311 1 11 8 2. A Ramirez, SS .258 5 27 9 3. J Dye, RF .277 15 39 0 4. P Konerko, 1B .291 8 39 0 5. 9. West Salem only plays summer baseball, but I don't know if he's coaching for them or not. I do remember him donating a fairly large amount of money to help upgrade the baseball diamond, but it's been a few years since I've really paid attention to the baseball there.
  10. If that happened to the Brewers, it'd easily spark the biggest explosion on this board in recent memory. The Ramirez HR game was just such a shock to the system that you felt more helpless than angry. Cordero in Texas was pretty bad for me, but mostly because it was my birthday and that lead was blown on like 42 consecutive seeing eye singles. If a Brewer dropped an easy would-be third out that directly resulted in game-winning runs scoring, I think the board would crash. I can only imagine the carnage if said player was Bill Hall. Edit: This needs to go into the FanGraphs Hall of Fame: http://www.fangraphs.com/lgraphs/290612110_Mets_Yankees_130993451_lbig.png
  11. The Bradley gaffe was an all-time classic, really...it was great on so many levels: - The way he just stood there after catching the ball, before slowly turning towards the crowd - The view from the home plate camera that showed Derrek Lee waving his arms and jumping up and down to try to get him to stop - Len Kasper slowly realizing with growing horror in his voice that Bradley didn't know how many outs there were I was half expecting someone in the bleachers to throw the ball back and peg him in the back for his stupidity. I'm mildly surprised that Piniella didn't yank him from the game right there. Someone needs to make a GIF of that play.
  12. I knew the White Sox were horrible offensively, but I had no clue they were so clueless defensively as well. They've just looked like a pitiful baseball team tonight, but I'll gladly take it. It's very nice to see Hart get going, and hopefully Hall's base hits -- as flukey as they might've been -- get him a bit of confidence as well. McGehee's been on a tear lately, too...I don't think he can keep it up, but it's definitely coming at a good time.
  13. Scotty Po's having a rough night on the bases so far. Gotta love Ozzie Ball...please keep running out of innings, Chicago. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  14. I think since the Brewers are wearing the retros tonight, the White Sox should've worn their retros. The ones with the shorts. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. Come on, it wouldn't be a Brewers/White Sox series without a brawl or beanball war. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  16. Interesting interview with Lex, to say the least. He was surprisingly candid and said some things that made me cringe, but I don't expect an 18-year old to be well polished when it comes to speaking in PC cliches that are "safe" answers. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif It'll be interesting to see if the Brewers think he's worth the money he's commanding.
  17. Don't forget about Peter Gammons picking Bobby Crosby to win the AL MVP two years ago...that one's my personal favorite.
  18. Here's to hoping a soft-tossing lefty means the offense gets a jump start. Hart had a couple encouraging ABs yesterday, and hopefully a mental break for Hardy will help him get on another hot streak. Edit: This is the kind of lineup I love seeing Suppan face: Scott Podsednik LF Alexi Ramirez SS Jermaine Dye RF A.J. Pierzynski C Brian Anderson CF Chris Getz 2B Gordon Beckham 3B Josh Fields 1B Clayton Richard LHP Not a very scary lineup, to say the least.
  19. Hopefully the great selection of awesome fares better than catching WOAH SOLVDD did. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  20. That could be what was holding things up, as originally expected. It'd be interesting to see if anything developed the rest of the afternoon before the game tonight. If anyone's a suspicious scratch tonight I think this thread might explode. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. I believe two years ago there was a bit of controversy, too, when the Brewers were left off a "wildcard contenders" graphic despite only being a game or so out of the wildcard lead at the time. The four-letter network overlooking the Brewers isn't really anything new. They pretty much discounted the Brewers from the beginning of the year, when every team preview noted the loss of Sabathia and Sheets without adding much more. When Weeks went down they were the lead story on BBTN, but they basically threw the Brewers' season out the window at that point. Nothing would be sweeter than winning the division and forcing them to scramble to put together a bunch of "What an incredible story! They really came outta nowhere, huh!?" stories.
  22. I don't frequent the rumors forum all that much, so I just read the entire 11-page thread. Needless to say, I'm pumped. All the names mentioned already are pretty exciting, to the point where it's getting hard to think about what would be realistic. I'm sitting here trying to figure out what it would take to get Zack Greinke. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  23. Richardson definitely seems like a great guy...obviously it'd probably take him a bit longer to make it due to his past priorities on football, but I'm rooting for him.
  24. At least the offense put up a fight at the end, so there are some encouraging signs. Hart had a couple good ABs off the bench. The White Sox are a very beatable team...I have confidence in them being able to take two of three to get the bad taste of this series out of the mouth.
  25. Coming into today, they've outscored their opponents 50-16 during the seven game winning streak. Sure, they haven't been crushing the ball like they did against Houston or St. Louis at the start of the streak, but they've had very good pitching for a solid week now. They're playing good baseball. Of course, the Brewers' struggles with RISP are maddening, too. Kind of a perfect crapstorm of a team struggling offensively running into a team pitching very well. Edit: Wow, how did Braun get that one out? Rivera's AB is definitely more disappointing in that light, though...hopefully Prince doesn't swing out of his shoes trying to tie it now.
