  1. Yup. If he'd given up a HR to somebody like Izturis I'd be worried.
  2. Aoki's back foot ended up in the opposite batter's box on that bunt.
  3. Yeah, that was a pretty bad call. Can't miss that, even though it was a good throw. I knew it was safe in real-time.
  4. Is it good or bad that he's not rolling over everything weakly to third base anymore like he was in ATL?
  5. You'd think they'd get more out of hitting for the team cycle than just 2 runs. It's not impossible to score only 1 doing that, but you'd think that it's pretty rare to get only 2 as well.
  6. Maybe we should start a separate, on-going bad calls thread, purely for yucks and not to circumvent the vent thread prohibition. This pic is up at Deadspin today. Shows the 5-pitch K to end the Rays-Red Sox game today in Boston (1-0 Rays victory). Who knows. Maybe the pitch tracker is "off". http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17js9zoncd6jvpng/xlarge.png http://deadspin.com/5902405/the-red-sox-game-ended-with-a-magical-elastic-strike-zone
  7. Agree that Dillard is just fine for the role he's slotted into. The problem isn't Dillard. The problem is a team that has gotten itself into situations where Dillard has had to pitch as much as he has. The basic problem is that the team has too many outfielders and not enough infielders. Can't get ABs for Aoki, stuck with ABs for Izturis. The way to diminish the impact of that situation in the short to medium tern is to have Weeks and Ramirez produce the way they need to. Longer term they probably need a replacement for Ishikawa. Wouldn't be opposed to moving Izturis eventually either, but you can gain more utility by replacing Ishikawa first (provided you actually replace him with a guy who gives you that utility).
  8. My preseason optimism is leaving me in a hurry, but that will happen when you run differential is approaching 2 runs/game. the only thing standing between the Crew and a truly abysmal out-of-the-gate record is the Cubs. Given the big-picture numbers it's actually kind of amazing that teh team will still only be 2-under in the absence of a miracle today.
  9. It will be great if things work out down there for the Marlins. The worst thing that ever happened to sports in South Florida, IMO, was moving the Dolphins out of the city. I think there is a lot to be said (and more than was realized) for just having that anchor right in Miami itself. For too long people wanted to move sports out to the suburbs (in a lot of places) and make everything uber-convenient for a certain segment of the audience. I think there is a lot to be said for having stadia/arenas right in the heart of cities and making going to the game a bit more exciting than just going to an edge-city mall/theatre complex. Obviously you can't make it terribly inconvenient for people to go, but I think people have figured out that building a non-descript venue in the middle of a field somewhere is no longer the right answer. The old Orange Bowl was great, but as times/people changed it had outlived its usefulness. Maybe the new Marlins park can capture some of that, at least to the degree that sports can capture public imagination as much as they used to.
  10. The Miami market has all the cynicism of the NE corridor markets but without the hardcore base. It's simply not a very good sports "town" if you can call a sprawling metro like that a town. That's fine. Not everyplace needs to be a sports town. Times have changed and there's now been a generation of kids growing up with the Marlins as the local team, but there used to be no question that there were both more Yankees and Mets fans in South Florida than Marlins fans.
  11. Tip the cap. Guys looking fastball and he just pumps in some nasty breaking stuff to get the advantage in both of those ABs.
  12. About what you'd expect from an Izturis PA. Hit a weak foul ball to third, then hit a weak dribbler to the first base side of the mound, the ball only reaching about halfway to the mound.
  13. Ouch. That's the old Rickie. 3 Ks with some bad swings tonight.
  14. ARam has hit the ball the same place his last three PAs. At least this time he hit it harder.
  15. And all of these reactions are occurring because ONE gutless, dishonorable person betrayed a trust and went running to the media with a story that hadn't played out yet. A very strong argument can be made that it's quite likely the leak was made with malice aforethought BECAUSE it hadn't played out yet and Braun's people were quite confident way back on that first day in December that they were going to win this thing (meaning that the time to strike for maximum damage infliction was BEFORE the story changed to a default setting favorable for Braun). If I had the money Ryan Braun does I'd spend a considerable amount of it quietly and consistently ruining that person's life, but that's because I'm bitter and vindictive. I'm sure others are bigger people than me and would just let it slide.
  16. I guess I can go either way on the IBB call, but in that situation I think no matter what I do I just play the infield at normal depth and try to keep the damage to 1 run. Maybe that's too fatalistic, but 2 and 3 with no outs I think you just have to think in terms of minimizing damage rather than hoping for the big result.
