  1. Cards have 2 runs on 14 hits through 9. It'll be a fun night here when the Crew posts those kind of numbers, but I guess we'd grudgingly take it if the Crew got the win because the other team has simply terrible plate discipline.
  2. I'm glad for Houston that they have the Texans.
  3. So we shouldn't institute replay because it will only correct 95% of wrong calls? That's like saying we shouldn't have amoxicillin because 5% of people may have diarrhea. I understand the resistance to replay because it has never been used and it's not part of the tradition of the game, but it's been incorporated seamlessly and successfully in every other sport and improved them. It can easily be used in baseball in a similar fashion. No, I didn't sya we shouldn't institute replay. But it WILL be imperfect and that needs to be considered. It is not a panacea for all that ails baseball officiating. In some cases it will create its own problems. We've already seen how replay has tended to make officials in football hesitant to make certain calls. If anything, that hesitatino would be much more of a problem in baseball than it is in football. I'm just saying it all needs to be thought through very carefully before just jumping in head first. I've yet to see any good solution to the problems inherent in using instant replay to review calls that are made on teh basepaths when there is continuing action elswhere on the field. Baseball has many more "can't unring the bell" situations than does football.
  4. You'd rather save Counsell for the bottom of the 9th? Why does it matter who is first off the bench? The only thing that matters in terms of PH is situation.
  5. Nothing is perfect. Therefore, it follows that any replay system will itself be imperfect and will introduce its own type of error into the game. What's worse from a perception standpoint: getting the call wrong on the field or having replay and getting the call wrong anyway? Sooner or later replay will overrule a decision that was made correctly on the field. The call will be made, the replay will be viewed and a new call will be made. Then, after the game, or even during it, a new piece of evidence will come to light demonstrating that the umpire was indeed correct. Even though it will be rare, it will happen and that fact needs to be considered.
  6. Baseball simply is not as amenable replay oversight, in mant cases, as are many other sports. The question isn't whether you want to get the calls right. Everybody wishes the world were perfect. It isn't. The question is whether institutiting replay will provide gains in accuracy that significanltly outwiegh both the cost of institutting replay and the introduction of other mistakes that will come with the replay process itself. In a lot of ways, the replay debate now is as much about the public relations aspect of simply introducing some sort of system as it is about making the game better. I'm not completely opposed to all further expansion of replay, but expansion, if it comes, should be incremental and narrowly focused.
  7. C'mon you guys. Embrace the fact that MLB is out to screw the Cards. Houston is just collateral damage.
  8. The Reds are going to be 8.5 out after tonight, 4 games under .500 and they are tied for the 7th best run-differential in baseball. Meanwhile, the entire AL Central continues to be on the negative side of the run-differential calculus.
  9. OK, somebody needds to get plunked in the bottom of the 9th. That's a dangerous pitch.
  10. Counsell gets an AB tonight? Have to stick around just to see that.
  11. It's been a long time since I've been relatively bored while watching a Brewers game. No suspense, nothing to complain about, no great plays. I'll take it.
  12. With Ed manning the 3B coaching box they even have a windmill.
  13. If those stupid 295-foot seats in left come into play here I'll be a little upset . .
  14. It's a shame people are paying major league ticket prices to sit in that park.
  15. Would have been hilarious if that ball had bounced through the fence where the guy was changing the numbers in the manually operated scoreboard.
  16. Has anyone ever explained why it's pronounced 'JAY' Happ instead of enunciating both initials as ' JAY AY' Happ? I'm assuming his first name isn't really Jay. Is it? Starting to look like maybe he should be B.B. Happ.
  17. I think Braun is just one of those guys who provokes strong feelings in that segment of people who don't like him and because of that those same folks can't figure out why anyone would like him. I can't wait to see hoe the Crew is treated in STL next week. I'm sure that by that point there will be a sizeable group of fans down there who have somehow twisted all of this into the Brewers somehow having done them wrong and that the Cards are the victims.
  18. My ISP crapped out on me for over 24 hours, just before the game started last night. It almost killed me not to get in my 2 cents here.
  19. My internet was out all yesterday and most of today. Did I miss any interesting comments?
  20. If somebody gets a walk-off hit with Counsell on deck at 0-45, will that somebody get booed like Rick Manning?
  21. Giants lose again tonight. Brewers 0.5 games out of the 2 seed. Random fun fact with no place to post it: The entire AL Central is currently sporting negative run differentials.
  22. Greinke stealing the sign on that bunt was epic.
  23. Some folks can't differentiate between the two.
