  1. Knew it wouldn't happen, but it would have been nice to see Central Wisconsin's own Jordan Zimmerman make it to the game as the Nats lone representative. Thought he had a chance coming out of Point, and then when he was great in AA it seemed like just a matter of time. But didn't expect him to pitch as well as he is now.
  2. I think Gamel at 3B might be telling us a lot. They want to see if he can (still, sort of) play there. I think it tells us as clearly as anything they know they have an issue at third. I think it tells us they'd prefer to keep Green out of the pressure cooker for now. It looks like they'd like to keep Gamel around and are just looking for a way to justify it in terms of finding a spot where he will do more than just be an occasional contributor off the bench. (If it's the latter, they probably send him down, as they need him to be ready next season). Hope Greinke can mentally handle the defense (such as it is) behind him today. I fear that if he's let down by them again early he could be in real trouble. I don't know if stuff like the headline in the JS about him "failing to meet expectations" botheres him or not, but another bad outing today will mean that the heat will really be on in his next home start vs the Reds.
  3. I think Gomez was probably a better option than Kotsay today. I do think Greinke worries about the defense behind him more than many, and with Target Field being not especially homer friendly at least having an outfield that can run down most ball in the park may have settled him down a little bit. Of course, maybe he just tries to K everyone today and hopes never to have to turn around and see exaclty what's behind him. The muscle injury to Braun, provided it's not significant in terms of actual structural damage, largely comes down to how well Braunie can deal with it. It's a very tough call and I doubt the organization will put him on the DL unless they have to, and then it will be a retroactive move at some point in the future. The upcoming homestand is a pretty important one, especially in view of what follows the break. They won't do anything to jeopardize the ability to play Braun in at least part of it unless they are certain that he can't go at all. If they do make a roster move quickly, I think that tells us a lot, and none of it good.
  4. How about that? Not sure if it's the biggest win of the year, but it's in the top few.
  5. If something is wrong with Braun this all means not so much. Time to finish it off, Ax Man. Then the T-Plush post-game is required viewing.
  6. If I had any kind of confidence in Counsell, I let him swing, but that seemed like a perfect time to take advantage of CC's strenghts and bunt. I appreciate the sentiment to keep attacking when the guy is missing like Capps was, but I think that's just getting a bit greedy, especially with CC at the plate. Classic late-inning Brewer tease from years gone by.
  7. There has not been a single point in this entire road trip that I thought the Brewers had a decent chance to win a game. They have now been down by at least 4 runs for half of the road trip.
  8. I'm starting to think there is a chance that by the end of July Braun's hit streak will be more important than the standings.
  9. That's a victory. Expanding on the above. Of the now 35 innings the Brewers have not led on this trip, they actually been BEHIND in every single inning. They ave trailed 31 of those 35 by at least 2 runs. So only being down 1 run at the end of an inning has only happened 4 times on this trip. 2 of them tonight and all of them in Minnesota.
  10. Innings played this road trip to date: 37 Innings led by Brewers on the road trip: 3 (all in one game)
  11. At stake tonight: Not being tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the loss column.
  12. Yeah, there are lots of moves that COULD make people happy. I'm just guessing that won't be the case. It's not a rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic situation. Far from it. But at some point I'll wonder what "all-in" means to the Brewers.
  13. No word yet? Why do I get the feeling that this move will cause more agita here than a bad game result?
  14. For some reason I fear this season could end up like 2007. The division is eminently winnable. AGAIN. But if this team keep performing like this on the road (no matter what the reason, or if there is no reason at all), they may not even get a chance to let things slip away, as they did in late September in Atlanta in 2007. The lineup that series was something like, Weeks, Hardy, Braun, Fielder, Hart, Jenkins, Hall, Estrada. That lineup is probably better than what the team has this year. In my mind the Brewers owe nothing to any position player on this year's roster not named Braun, Fielder, Weeks or Hart. If you're all-in you have to be all-in. You don't have to mortgage the future, but everyone else should be dealt with with strictly on a performance basis. Obviously you need to manage the people as people, but a good clubhouse will go bad just as easily over frustration due to underperformance as it will over guys thinking someone is dealt with unfairly. They need to get this done, or accept the fact they're not much different than Pittsburgh. It's nice that the Brewers have the 1 in the 1-15 record the NL Central has posted in the playoffs since the Classies won the series, but my 3rd grad Kickball League championship trophy is nice, too.
  15. You win as a team, you lose as a team. While the first part eludes them, the Brewers have the second half down pat.
  16. I don't think it's ALL that should matter, but it should be foremost in the equation. Very nice job by Yo getting out of that. Time for the middle/bottom of the order to do something.
  17. Braun is so good. Was just gonna post a question as to why he was taking that 3-0 meatball all the way, only to get caught with a tough second strike call. Then he goes and just rips it with a full count anyway.
  18. Yeah, Betancourt stinks. But you can't walk Cudduyer to get to one of the great HR hitters in the history of the game. Yo had a nice stretch there, but he was shaky early in the year and he looks to be reverting to that form. It's a good thing this road thing is just an inexplicable statistical blip attributable to random variance that our human minds only wish to put into some kind of meaninful context..
  19. The best stretch the pen had this year was when McClendon and Mitre were pitching well enough in their roles. Neither is with the big club any longer. In the meantime, the organization has screwed around with Estrada (starter), DiFelice (?), Hererra (disaster), Dillard (no defined role) and really gotten nothing out of it. Braddock hasn't done much either. This isn't to say that McClendon and Mitre are really good, or even kinda good. I'm not saying you want those guys pitching oftern, or even ever, in high leverage situations. But the way bullpens work in today's MLB I'd rather have guys who are good in a given role than perhaps marginally more talented guys who are mismatched with their position. Of course you'd rather have a pen full of big power arms, but nobody has that and if a team did it would most certainly not be Milwaukee. As good as the starting pitching has been you'd think this shouldn't be that hard, but the baseball operation from the GM down to the manager seems to have messed it up a lot worse than need be. They've been in a position of waiting for guys to get back, but they really haven't had to scramble because guys have gotten hurt in-season. It seems like they have just been making changes to make changes with some of these spots. It certainly doesn't seem like there has been much of a commitment to any sort of plan. Just waiting for Saito to come back isn't a plan.
  20. If form holds, and you want to predict a winning record on the month, you have to figure out which series they will sweep at home and go from there. 13-14. Too many road games, plus the Reds.
  21. RR has made some bad decisions, but I think some of the criticism here is over the top. RR came in for big criticism here one night the team got shut out because of his pitching decisions. The bottom line is that the team is still good enough to be in first place in their division. That's all that matters. Just win the division. Then you just hope they can pull off a Seahawks-type upset in the first round of the playoffs and you go from there. That would be quite an accomplishment for an NL Central team. Hasn't happened in a while.
  22. 22-4. Held the lead at the end of 3 innings in the entire series. Were tied for the lead at the end of 0 innings in the series.
  23. Unless you compare that number with runs gained due too be aggressive, I don't know that it means a whole lot. Not saying it would turn out any better (and it might be worse) but just counting up outs on teh bases isn't enough. There is also teh question of whehter the problem is strategy, execution of strategy, or just plain poor-decision-making unrelated to whether or not the player was looking to be aggressive.
