  1. He was literally on 3rd base when the LF was coming up into his throwing motion.
  2. Wow, giving Fielder a chance. Maybe Weeks should have thought of that a few innings ago.
  3. I was going to say something nice about McClendon at the start of the inning but I was afraid I'd jinx him. And as soon as I type a smart-aleck comment he gets a GIDP.
  4. That was Greinke-like in its unexpected suddeness.
  5. You can't make errors on balls you can't get to. The problem with all of our fielders except Weeks and Gomez/Morgan is range. Fully understood. But I still contend the Brewers are playing better defense so far this year than they did last year when they were simply awful. There wasn't a whole heck of a lot of range in the infield last season, either. From a mental-state point of view, I think there is also something to be said for just making the plays you can make. On most balls that make it through the infield there is no point in wondering whether another step of range may have led to an out; you simply don't know. When you kick a routine play, it stares you in the face for the rest of that half-inning. Guys can live with hits the other team gets if they're anywhere close to legitimate hits; you accept your limitations and move on. It's harder to ignore the vast majority of errors which are just simply fundamental breakdowns. The systemic Brewer defensive deficiencies will likely manifest themselves over the course of the season: but on a day-to-day basis they're doing well with what they have. It beats the hell out of not being good in the big picture and compounding that with not maximizing what you do have on a game-to-game basis.
  6. Wow. I won't argue the Brewers are a great defensive team, because they aren't. And you can argue about range and the like all you want. But when you go from 23 errors to 9 over the same span of games from one season to the next it's pretty hard to say they aren't *playing* much better defensively, even if they aren't "better" on paper, or from some theoretical standpoint. Will it continue? Who knows. But there has to be some correlation between the decrease in errors and the +10 win differential.
  7. Yep. Looks like if guys can wait on stuff they can handle it. Easier said than done. Braun can do it. Fielder can do it. Other guys still have to be at their very best to make it happen.
  8. Nice double-take Braunie did on the called first strike.
  9. Thing about that bunt was, given how much the Crew was struggling to score runs at that point, there was a fair amount of not minding that the Crew was taking baby steps to make sure they got a run.
  10. Haven't seen the Crew's lineup yet, but I'll take the liberty to lodge the first complaint. Was at a miserable game against the Giants last season in early July. Sanchez was there to be beaten and the Brewers just let him off the hook. Escobar had a bad error. Posey had a real nice game; one of those games where you get to see in person that the new guy is a ballplayer. The Giants just worked the Crew that whole series and I think it was at that point last season when I knew they were just playing out the string. High point: great seats, got a foul ball of the bat of Pat Burrell. Time to turn that series around and stamp the momentum permanently turned in the other direction this season.
  11. 12 pitches, 4 outs. Nice work. RR clearly had the plan thought out in terms of the DS and Loe pitching the 9th.
  12. That whole situation turned out well, but it was a perfect opportunity to get Rivera an AB. Why have him up (with yet another backup C also on the roster) if you're not gong to find ways to get him plate appearances?
  13. I thnk I probably would have left the pitcher in teh 9 hole there and not done the double. Loe wouldn't have been hitting anyway and you could have gotten Rivera an AB there with a man on if the situation arose. Now we're looking at Yuni batting with a man on if the situation arises.
  14. I mean not swinging at pitches that aren't hittable, especially when you're way ahead in the count. Or not hittting a borderline first pitch into a double play against a guy who can obviously be worked a bit for a better ptich.
  15. Marquis has been pretty erratic the past 6 or so ABs and Kotsay was the only one of the last 3 batters to have any clue as to how to approach his AB. Edit: make that 4.
  16. Seriously Casey? You're ahead 3-0 in the count and you get yourself out on that pitch?
  17. That looked pretty improbable way back in the 3rd/4th. Have to give big credit to Mitre and McClendon.
  18. Boggs hit the catcher pretty hard, but it wasn't one of theose spectacular collisions with people flying around.. More like one of those where a guy gets hurt because all the energy of the collision gets absorbed by both players. Kind of like hitting a brick wall.
  19. Would you guys put Boggs in CF here and the pitcher in the 3 hole? Have to do it, right?
  20. Nice job by the pen to keep this game where it was. Can't let McClendon back out there in the 8th.
