The Incredible Shrinking Tyler Black

In 2021 the Brewers drafted Tyler Black.  An infielder from  Toronto Canada who had just completed his Junior season at Wright State University.  To be very specific the Brewers drafted Tyler Black: the 6.2” infielder from Wright State university.

"Proud to have been selected by the Brewers in the MLB draft," Tyler Black wrote on his Instagram page. "Thank you to Wright State Baseball for taking a chance on a kid from Canada. Excited to get started."  Black added the hashtag "brewcrew" to the caption, the nickname for the Brewers team.  The 6-foot-2 player hit 13 home runs, had 59 RBI and a batting average of .383 in 48 games with the Wright State Raiders this year. He added 11 stolen bases.  CBC report on July 11, 2021

 

Also reporting that Tyler Black was 6’2” was the Toronto Star and many many scouting report websites. 

Today, Tyler Black is listed as a 5’10” tall third baseman by the Brewers, MLB and other player statistics sites. 

Perhaps this could be explained by Tyler Black being Canadian and someone got the math wrong when they translated his height in meters in Canada to feet and inches in the States?  But for the three years, at Wright State their roster had Tyler Black as 6'2”.  One would hope that Wright State folks know how to measure height and would not engage in unethically “stretching” the truth by four inches. 

The other potential answer is that Tyler Black shrunk.  Could this have happened?  Well, he was 6.2” in Canada, at Wright State and when he signed with the Brewers.  It seems like the shrinkage happened around the time he was playing in the heat of the Arizona Fall League.  Could the warm air of Arizona have shrunken Canadian Tyler Black?   

I ask this question while wearing a sweater that is now three sizes too small after accidentally being dried in a dryer set on high.  And I ask you to come up with a better answer for the incredible shrinking Tyler Black? 

Also, should the Brewers be worried that Tyler Black will shrink from prospect status?  He has shrunk four inches in about two years.  If this keeps up, he will be 5’2” by the time he is 28.  That may help Black draw walks; but it will be difficult to generate power from such a diminutive frame.

And no the sweater isn't three sizes too small just because of all the Christmas cookies eaten.

Haha, there was much talk about Tyler Black’s (ahem) shrinkage over on the Minors forum this summer.

FanGraphs had a nice dive into the topic in general a little bit back too, with Black getting some mention.

Essentially boils down to amateurs over-reporting their height because it is advantageous to do so, and then once they reach the minors (especially leagues with automated ball strike systems) it becomes advantageous to be shorter.

Brewers had by far the most players who shrunk in that linked article so there may be some degree of organizational gamesmanship at play as well.

So you're saying he could play first base??

Yah, I'm guessing with Black the truth is somewhere in between. I could see him slouching a bit to take advantage of a smaller automated strike zone.

Different sport, but I seem to remember some stories from the NBA combine where prospects were sacrificing an inch or two on their standing reach measurement by not fully extending in order to add that amount to their jumping measurement.
