Roy Oswalt Available?

Posted
According to Baseball Tonight, Roy Oswalt could very well be available soon as the Astros continue to fall back to earth. I think there is no doubt we should go after him but what would we have to give up? I would give up the farm for him because he has years left on his contract.

I highly doubt he would be traded in the NL, much less to a team in the central. However, i have no problem giving up Gamel or Laporta(or maybe even both), for a true ace like Roy, who still has a few years left on his deal.

My first thought is, "Houston would need to get young arms." Their pitching is already woefully thin, and then Oswalt would be gone - I think they'd want as many young pitchers as they could grab.

This is a guy that I would give up Prince for, not CC. I'd try LaPorta and/or Gamel first as it would give us a better shot of winning now, but if he's available he's someone I'd give up a ton for. Imagine Sheets and Oswalt in the same rotation, deadly. Sheets/Oswalt/Gallardo/Suppan/Parra next year would be crazy though taking Oswalt's contract would probably mean the end of Sheets for sure.

Wow, Oswalt has been homer-riffic this year. His career high for HRs given up in a season is 18 and that was in 241 IP. This year he has given up 17 in 102 IP. His K-BB rate is still good, but he's giving up more hits and more runs are being scored. By ERA+ he is performing as basically replacement level so far. I can see why the Astros might entertain the thought of giving him up.
