Cubs Trade Rumors

Seeing that the Cubs are our #1 rival/contender I think that it makes sense to keep tabs on what they might be doing to improve over the course of the season. What rumors have been floating out there?

I heard they're willing to deal Matt Murton for bullpen help. Although I wouldn't give up a good bullpen arm for Matt Murton so if that's all they're willing to trade they won't get much.

Not that they are valuable, but I would imagine they are dangling Jones and Prior, as well.

Prior can't pick up a baseball until November or December at which time the Cubs may not want to offer him arbitration so he may have thrown his last pitch as a Cub. His value is less than nothing.

 

The fans all want Jones dealt, but he's got a fairly large contract and is not all that attractive to other teams.

 

The Cubs are stuck. The guys they'd like to get rid of, Jones, Howry, Eyre, are all saddled with big contracts.

And in three years, the next problem they will be asking themselves is, "How do we deal this Soriano guy?"

I guess what worries me about the Cubs is what would happen if they got actual bullpen help. If that happens they could become a very serious threat.

The guys in the Cub pen (Howry, Wuertz, Eyre, Ohman, Dempster), all have some record of success in the past. If they ever all start to pitch like their capable, then I'd worry.

 

Of course if that happens, its likely guys like Marquis will come back down to earth.

Gee, if you way overpay for average guys, and they don't play well, you can't get value back for them in a trade? That's the first time I've ever heard of that - NOT (Yankees, Orioles et al).
