You are still generalizing. The point is, this happened not in the "ghetto", random violence is everywhere, the fallacy of a safe suburb is alive and strong. But if you want to say that violent crime rates are increased in the inner cities, then yes. But just saying this kind of Violent crime only exists in the inner city is simply silly.

A guy was gunned down in broad daylight on 60th and Greenfield just last weekend. That's West Allis - not the inner city.

This thread was the first thing I thought of this morning after hearing the news story about the two would-be robbers who were shot (last night?) on ~10th and Chambers. Paraphrased comments from family members were direct denials that the perpetrators would ever do anything bad, not criminals, never had any trouble, they wouldn't be robbing anyone, cops are wrong, etc. Yet, both persons had extensive criminal records, even including armed robbery.

Perfectly backed up Invader's comment. Right on cue.

"I was flicking through the channels on the TV, on a Sunday in Milwaukee in the rain,
Trying to piece together conversations ... Trying to find out where to lay the blame"

Most days i have a great deal of faith in the good of humanity. This was not one of those days. I put this guy in the group of individuals that stroll around presidential events with loaded guns. I'm not sure why, but it seems like we have alot of people who are absolutely desensitized to violence.

Props to Mayor Barrett and the thousands of other good citizens that put their lives on the line for strangers. Throw the book at the guy. If he serves less than 10 years, i will be extremely disappointed.

Yeesh. Y'know, I expect relatives to kind of turn a blind eye to the wrongdoings, but the mom's comments are borderline sick.

"I guess I just grew up in a time when it was understood you minded our own business and don't get involved in other people's affairs" Not a direct quote, but that's the very basic gist of what she said.

Truly sickening.

She's right... if a woman is screaming for help and telling passerbys to call 911, people should really just mind their own business.

This is like political spin - they are saying something so absurd and just hoping that some people will agree/believe.

I hope this guy never sees his kid again. Anyone that stupid and violent, with a family that stupid, doesn't belong in the kids life. Did this moron really even know it was the mayor? Why would the family say that if it was anyone other than the mayor he wouldn't have done that? What's he doing with a lead pipe at state fair anyway?

I see what your saying Invader but I believe the correct response is "We are sorry our family member is an idiot and did something so terrible."

I realize it's the Onion, but I think the national media has been reporting this story as an event that happened at the Wisconsin State Fair (Also phxMILWfan's post suggested this as well). It didn't. It happened as the Mayor was walking to his car, which was apparently parked on the street a couple of blocks from the fair grounds.

It's a black eye for West Allis which is in turn a black eye for the State Fair, which is located in West Allis. Street parking really is a Fair-related issue. For all intents and purposes, it's one and the same in this scenario. Either way though, it was completely random and unpredictable, so it's not as if it should deter rational people from visiting either of State Fair or West Allis as a whole.
