Doug Davis released

Posted
Cubs have unconditionally released Doug Davis. Going 1-7 with a 6.50 ERA for one of the worst teams in baseball should spell the end of his career. He did beat the Yankees though.

My kid brother and some of his friends used to party with Davis in New Berlin. His description of Davis in a bar matches what's in the link to the letter. I don't know that that adds any credibility to the rest of the story, but Davis "getting tanked and tossing around hundreds" would appear to be spot on.

I happened to have the day off when he beat the Yankees and I watched on MLB Network. I think the two keys to Doug's on-field mojo were to wear #49 (which obviously couldn't happen his second time in MIL or with CHC) and to have me in the viewing audience.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
