It's known as the "vicinity play." Umps will give shortstops and second basemen some leeway to allow them to avoid a charging baserunner. If he's WAY off the base and it's pretty obvious he didn't even put any effort into even making it look close, I've seen umps call the guy safe.

Yeah, I definitely know the play. I just thought he was off enough that he definitely could have been called safe. I'm glad he wasn't though...
