Emilio Bonifacio

If we can't land Reyes, Melvin could look at trading for Bonifacio. I know his range is just as bad as Yuni's at short, but he does get on base at a good clip unlike Yuni. He has excellent speed, great versatility and would be nice at either leadoff or in the seven hole. He hits arbitration for the first time in 2012, and could potentially be expendable with Hanley coming back off injury. Maybe a package of Wolf or Marcum and a mid-level prospect like Merklinger or Meadows. Thoughts?

Career OBP of .328 with last year a high of .360. His other years were .333, .296, .303, and .320. Those are better than Yuni but I don't think they constitute a good clip. A package involving Wolf/Marcum would be way overpaying. I would trade a mid-level prospect maybe but that's it. And I think we should concentrate on getting a glove-first SS.

This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.

Yeah, I was referring to his 2011 .360 OBP where he finally got regular playing time

I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure he was a starter in 09 and parts of 2010 as well but he's been injured a few times. I wouldn't mind having him but Marcum is definitely overpaying and Wolf might be as well.

Marcum wouldn't be overpaying. You are getting a switch hitting middle infielder (who could also play 3B and CF) who hit .296, stole 40 bases, in his prime who you'd control for 3 more seasons.. Those guys do not grow on trees. Not only that you'd be getting roughly $4 million ($7 million in the case of Wolf) of salary relief. I'd do that deal in a second. But I doubt the Marlins would.

He had a .372 BABIP last year, up from his previous career mark of ~.320. I don't think there is any way he sustains that. Trading Marcum for a guy who fields a tiny bit better than Yuni and OBP's .300 would be a horrible move.

Did people really forget how great Marcum was outside of the playoffs? Geesh.

Yeah I don't get this either. The guy was great this season overall and was pretty darn good in 07, 08, and 10 (missed 09 due to injuries). He may have been tired at the end of the year but I don't think that's the case since he only pitched 5 more innings than the previous year. I think it's just a bad stretch he went through which happened to come at the worst possible time. Either way, I wouldn't trade the guy we traded Lawrie for to get a guy who is basically a switch-hitting Gomez without the defense and power. He gets on base a little more than Gomez but probably isn't as fast. And I don't think he'll replicate his numbers from this year. Probably looking somewhere around .270/.320/.340 with 25-30 steals. I don't think that's worth Marcum.

Unless our brass knows/thinks Marcum is going to be bad this year, I agree we are selling him short too much because of his post-season. That said, we should be telling teams Wolf is available for the right price in an effort to sell high and possibly cut some payroll to be used elsewhere.
