Free Agent Comparison...Cuddyer, Pena and Ramirez

The Brewers' lineup is set beyond first base and third base right now. They could go with McGehee/Green at 3rd, or McGehee/Gamel at first...so I thought I'd look at some options, to see how they compare.

 

I have no idea what any of these guys would cost, and I have no idea if team management has any interest in any of them beyond Aramis.

 

Three year averages, with 2012 age...

 

Cuddyer - 22 HR, .277 average, .807 OPS, 1.7 WAR, age 33, 2011 Salary - 10.5M

 

Pena - 32 HR, .216 average, .815 OPS, 1.7 WAR, age 34, 2011 Salary - $9,959,996

 

Ramirez - 22 HR, .288 average, .840 OPS, 1.3 WAR, age 34, 2011 Salary - 14.6M

I want no part of Cuddyer or Pena. Ramirez, I have some interest in, but that is starting to cool somewhat. I really worry about his defense and motivation, to the point I'd only give him a two year deal. This way, you'd be sure he'd be playing for a contract 50% of the time and you wouldn't have to worry as much about a shift to 1B when his defense goes from bad to unacceptable.

Cuddyer has a 3 year $24 million offer from the Twins. That is probably the minimum he'll get.

i'm good with giving greene and gamel a shot. marginal free agents are getting WAYYYYYYYYYY too much money this offseason.

I wouldn't complain a bit if they signed Pena, but I do want Gamel to get a chance to play every day and the only spot that will happen at is 1B or on someone else's roster.

why not add Beltran to this list and play him in RF or at 1st?

 

i think ramirez is definitely the way to go...
