Phil Hughes to Twins: 3 years/$24M

Joins Nolasco with the Twins. I know some of you were looking at Hughes for the Brewers.

Hughes has been really bad 2 of the last 3 years but he still has talent. The Twins are spending some money this offseason to upgrade their rotation.

So the Twins just spent about $75 million on Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes. Not saying the moves are boneheaded (Target Field generally has a HR park factor favoring the pitcher), but just imagine the outrage if Doug Melvin gave those two guys the same contracts to come play in Milwaukee.

Hughes seems to have had some New York-itis so he might be just fine in Minneapolis. He's always had the talent it seems.

I really like both signings for the Twins. Both at a decent age, fair value, and durable.

The Hughes signing is impressive to me at that amount. I think new Yankee Stadium had at least something to do with the down years. If the Brewers had signed Hughes at that price I wouldn't be without caution, but not the worst chance ever taken.

I think Hughes had a hard time in NYC and will be better in Minny. I would have liked it for the Crew but we need a groundball guy to pitch here in Miller Park.

Seems a little expensive for Hughes. Looks like he made some dramatic changes in his pitch selection last year. Either that or his curveball is flattening out.

 

Both look like bad but not horrible deals. At least Hughes is under 30 and neither cost a pick.

Twins have a lot of money with Morneau off the books and the $26 million extra that every team is getting from the new TV deal. They had to do something after back to back 66 win seasons, and attendance in free fall. They couldn't wait for prospects and high draft picks to spark interest. I still don't think they are very good, but at least they have something to sell.
