Monte Harrison (Turning the Corner?)

Posted

No puns intended as Harrison turned down being a WR for Nebraska, but has Harrison turned the corner?

Just 75 AB's but 6 HR's and batting .315/.375/.630

He's a big kid, 6'3" 220 pounds... Has he gotten faster since Perfect Game recorded him at 6.6 in the 60? Or is that his top end speed. Still have the cannon arm? I haven't had a chance to see him play yet, but the early returns on his stats seem promising

In person, I see huge difference in his approach at the plate this season compared to last. Even though he's had some ugly AB's this season, they are far and few between compared to last season. He doesn't look completely lost at the plate anymore. Not sure if his speed as changed or not. Has made playing CF this season look easy with his long strides, and has made some pretty impressive diving plays. The arm strength is still there, however, his accuracy is nothing to write home about.

He has had so little contiguous time playing that his whole playing history has been a sequence of small samples. Last year, he was putting together a very encouraging streak of games when he got hurt yet again.

So if "turning the corner", you mean staying healthy... I certainly hope so. Talent wise he always was a boom-bust type guy. High talent, but raw. Injuries just prevented him from really getting good development time. So hopefully he can play this whole year and we can start to see what he will become.

Otherwise, this is still just another small sample. But an encouraging one.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."
