Diamondbacks sign catcher Stephen Vogt to a one-year contract

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Diamondbacks have signed catcher Stephen Vogt to a one-year contract.

The deal also carries a vesting option for the 2021 campaign. No word yet on the financial terms. Vogt, 35, reportedly drew interest from several teams this offseason after posting a strong .804 OPS with 10 home runs and 40 RBI over 99 games (56 starts) with the Giants in 2019. The veteran catcher will presumably serve as the primary backup to Carson Kelly next year in Arizona.

Arizona likes to Carry 3 catchers, so Vogt makes some sense since he can pinch hit without burning the only other catcher in the roster

We believe in Pinottingham!

I'd be shocked if a trade or signing isn't made. Remember Yaz signed on 1/14 last season. I just don't get the level of anxiety this early in free agency / offseason.

Yaz was still available on 1/14 last year. I get what people are saying when they say it's still early, but the few decent chips for catchers are already falling off the table. At this point it's kind of either Jason Castro or a trade, and I don't really know what's available out there for a trade.

Yes, there isn't a Yaz free right now. I think a trade is more likely than a signing at this point, but I just can't believe they would go into the season with that catching corp.

It could be Castro, but Avila, Romine, and Chirinos are FA and Seattle is shopping Narvaez

Vogt isn't really a good catcher or any sort of defensive player and his bat really isn't much for a guy with no defensive value. Factor in a 35 year old shoulder that almost ended his career and the Brewers would have been pretty stupid to rely on him to split catcher duties.
