For the optimists out there, like myself, that like to remain hopefully about pitching prospects that can’t seem to stay healthy in recent years (i.e. Nathan Kirby, Nash Walters, Brendan Murphy, Lun Zhao, Scotty Sunitsch, the list goes on)- Here is some news for you! RHP Caden Lemons threw his first bullpen session since last year’s surgery today.  He is likely to join one of the ACL squads within the next few weeks and hopes to make it back to Carolina by season’s end.

More news from a rehabbing farmhand, LHP Jackson Gillis also threw his first bullpen of the season yesterday.  His return may be somewhat quicker than Lemons, though, as he will work out of the bullpen as would be expected.  Lemons, however, still plans to be stretched out in preparation to start games once again which will slow his timeline.

26-year old RHP Thomas Jankins of Massachusetts was drafted by the Brewers in the 13th round of the 2016 draft out of Quinnipiac University. A reliable performer, Jankins scaled through 5 minor league levels (High Rookie Helena to AAA San Antonio) in just 4 seasons, skipping High-A Carolina altogether.

In spite of the aggressive placements, Jankins accumulated respectable stats over those first 4 seasons: 88 games (77 starts), 30-24 record, 3.95 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 7.1 K/9, 3.2 K/BB ratio. The biggest surprise was his promotion to AAA in April 2019 on a full-time basis ahead of more-heralded Trey Supak, Cody Ponce and Marcos Diplan, but Mr. Jankins wasn’t overwhelmed by AAA ball at age 23/24, battling to a respectable 4.38 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 123 1/3 innings in the notoriously difficult Pacific Coast League that season.

Unfortunately, the 2020 Covid wipeout stunted Jankins’ momentum and he never got going at AAA Nashville in 2021, registering a 6.11 ERA in 84 innings as he steadily shifted toward more bullpen work. The start to 2022 has also been a bit of a struggle and perhaps his first injury placement since 2017 was the final straw in his retirement decision. We credit your achievements, Thomas Jankins and wish you terrific success wherever the road of life takes you.

Yeah, this is a wonderful article. Thanks, @damuelle! Really enjoyed reading and relating to his story. He made a very practical personal life-based decision as an 17/18 yo to leave Minor League ball and grab his degree. He came back, but because he had already signed he was un-draftable. Another working man's story. Another underdog. I hope he shines!

Not to sound the alarm too early but… Jackson Chourio was not even in uniform at the ballpark in Carolina today.  He was with the team but did not partake in batting practice.  I should also note that I have confirmed with multiple sources that he is not injured.  Speculation may commence now

Out of baseball (presumably) at 21. Happens every day, but seldom with that much of a bankroll. He's Dominican, he'll be set for life if he has 25% of his signing bonus.

Former DSL All-Star RHP Rafael Garcia threw his first bullpen session of the year yesterday and it went well.  The 21-year-old Panamanian righty struggled in his stateside debut last year as he’ll hope to bounce back whenever he gets into a game.
