Nothing comes easy for the Shuckers. Cruising 6-0, they crashed into the overpass…five straight Chattanooga hits (all off Castaneda) to open the top of the 5th inning cut it to 6-4. RHP Robbie Baker comes in.

Have you seen how he's swung the bat in Durham? Not that surprising at all considering. He's been on an absolute tear.

he's been hot, but not a typical leadoff hitter compared to the others. And he's not really a prospect.

Welcome to Double-A Mr. Baker - 2/3 IP 2 K's. He gets them out of that jam. Zavi Warren knocks home Dillard and Whitely after their double steal. 8-4 Shuckers. Warren now has 5 RBI's on the evening.

So Wiemer is back doing Wiemer things.  Hope he ends the season strong, and has a decent shot at making the team out of spring training.

Oh, hey, I almost forgot! Shucks!

Brice Turang hit another HR tonight. I'm going to say it yet again: He is just discovering his power stroke. He is 22 years old. I could get real used to 1 HR every 5 game output from Turang. ?

AND, it's a home run palooza in Biloxi's bottom of the sixth. Not 1. Not 2. BUT, 3 jacks. Corey RayCam Devanney (his 18th), and Thomas Dillard all smack solo jacks. It's now 11-5 Shuckers. Let's GO! Corey and Cam led off with back-to-backs.

THIS is exactly why I see Cam Devanney as a very serious candidate to be protected in Rule 5. The improved bat is obviously one thing. The body-type is another. From Game 1, and I am dead serious, he has flashed the stalwart D and the cannon. He can fill in any spot on the left-side of the diamond. 18th HR blast just plated here in the 6th...he is trending UP. Check out this defense:

And, how about a lil power stroke from 'down under'.

so you're saying he's gonna a be a 30 HR guy next year?

You mean protected from the minor league rule five draft, right? I can't imagine a big league club thinking there was enough upside to commit to keeping him on the roster all season.

I'm not saying anything other than:

(1) He is only just discovering the power stroke

(2) I could get real used to a 1 HR every 5 games played pace

The fun part is: we get to watch what happens.

I do. Whereas I can't fathom it with Valerio given his season overall (and, I'm still high on Valerio) and his defensive limitations, I can legit see a path for Devanney to stick. This obviously doesn't mean he is going to be protected. BUT, consider he was promoted from the ACL straight to Double-A right after the COVID-cancelled season. He was placed here again to start 2022. Whereas Ashton McGee started Game 1 - he was injured that same game - he was ultimately demoted after a significant regression at the dish. Cam came in from Day 1 of the season and grew into an MLB player before our eyes. I see quite a bit of upside potential in this player. The defense is stellar. The arm is an absolute cannon. And, now, well now we're seeing a player develop offensively. In a system incredibly thin on capable 3B prospects, it's an interesting proposition that Cam Devanney very well could be the current next in line ultility-knife infielder behind Brice Turang. The bat evolution in 2022 is the cherry on top. Everything you want to see. We simply don't have many players (if any) that can make this play:

Eh, Devanney is a bit older but Fangraphs touted his power potential at one point, so it isn't just a fluke with the power. A guy with power who can play all over the infield and isn't overly strikeout prone could be enticing. The Brewers took a similar guy in Colin Walsh a number of years ago.
