Links

It really bugs me when I make (or click on) a link and it doesn't open a new window, but just opens in the window that I'm currently using. It seems like sometimes I can get it to open in a new window but not always. I always make my links the same way so I don't know why I'd be having this issue. Any ideas?

Excellent, another Opera user. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Joe, that's really curious. You're just talking about forum links, right? I don't see why there'd be inconsistency, it doesn't make sense.

Yeah I was just talking about forum links. I did notice though, when I use Mozilla and make a link it doesn't open in a new window. However, if I use Internet Explorer, the links I make open in a new window so i dunno.

I looked at the source, and I wonder if it's how target="top" is handled by IE versus FF.

Opera opens in the same window as well, so I'm sure what's going on is that the standards say that "top" should open in the same window (I think "_Top" opens in new and "_top" opens in same as well), and IE does it's own thing, as usual.

Yeah I usually just use the right click/open in new window option, but its just a little more convienent to just have the link open in a new window automatically.

I'm one of those who absolutely hates new windows I don't request. To me, it's unnecessary clutter and should be a user-controlled issue. Also, it's confusing when different web sites have different behaviors. Following a link and having it open in the same tab or window has been the 'expected' browser behavior since browsers were first available.

If I want two web pages available simultaneously, I'll opt to open a new tab or window with a right-click. (I almost never use a new window; tabs are so much more handy.)

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
