Are we sure Rodgers on that squad will be THAT good? With 2021 Rodgers, the Jets are NOT the best team in that division. With 2022 Rodgers they might be the worst team in that division. It would be quite hilarious if the Packers bet against Rodgers and settled on the 2024 first round pick as primary comp only to have it be a top 10 pick.

I think the 24 1st will be conditional. So if they suck, chances are the pick doesn't end up being a 1st. If Gute can get a guaranteed 1st, fantastic but conditional with a reasonable chance of it becoming a 1st seems a lot more likely to me.

So Rodgers wasn't answering when Gute called. I can't believe Rodgers left that out of his story!

I imagine it was like this when Gute attempted to call him.

Asking for protections back in 2025 if A-Rod doesn't return is a 'no go' from my vantage point. If they stick hard to that, dig in the heels. That's the risk they take for the opportunity to have a meaningful shot. The 2024 compensation is also the validation of why the Packers aren't demanding a 1st rd pick imho.

Depends on that that 2025 protection is.  Yeah, we'll give you a 5th round pick if he doesn't play, sure.  Maybe even a 3rd because we can't draft in the 3rd round to save our arse.  Anything more than a 3rd is a no-go.

The 3rd round failures for Gute are just weird.

  • 2022: Sean Rhyan - PED
  • 2021: Amari Rodgers - Cut
  • 2020: Josiah Deguara - meh
  • 2019: Jace Sternberger - Cut
  • 2018: Oren Burks - let go as a FA

That's pretty bad. I guess Rhyan could pan out - so there's time there. Deguara is still around - but hasn't look like anything special. I know he's had some injuries.

After 4-5 years, roughly 1/3 of all 3rd round picks have not been a starter at least one year in the league. And while there's not a ton of pro bowl types (I counted six from amongst the 3rd rounds in 2018/19), teams should be getting some players that contribute on a regular basis.

Oh well - maybe this year!

I actually have a weird sense of confidence this is the year Deguara shines. I personally feel he is a better player than given credit for and has improved significantly in the run game. I think Love helps him get involved quite a but more in the passing game.

There really isn't precedent for an elite talent to be traded in the NFL with minimal team control. Maybe looking at baseball is the answer as it happens quite often. Teams have a tendency to shell out big in prospect value for elite talents at the deadline with either 0.5 or 1.5 years of team control remaining. I certainly get the impression from comments above that sides are not close. If the Packers are just now backing off needing #13 overall AND the Jets claim the Packers are being irrational and unreasonable...that gives me the impression maybe they think he's worth like a 3rd or something and the Packers wanted #13 overall value which I think I've seen would also be comparable to getting those 2 2nds. Maybe the sides really are THAT far apart.

It doesn't surprise me that we asked for #13. It also doesn't surprise me that we never really had a chance of getting it.

What does surprise you? 🤔😅

That we DFAed Keston Hiura :(

It surprises me you think he was DFA'd as Hiura was Outrighted. I know it's getting into minutia here but there is a difference.

I don't think you can be outrighted without being DFAed? Not 100% sure on that.

All I meant to point out, even though I understand he remains with the organization, is that it feels like the end of an era that never was with Hiura. A few years ago I thought he was going to be a mainstay in this lineup for years, but I was very mistaken. If only our offense had the Hiura and Yelich we thought we had 3 years ago, who knows where the fortunes of this organization would be.

EDIT: Oops sorry, back to the Packers 😅

I'm not sure I heard he tends to double clutch on throws to across the diamond if the first basemen doesn't take the proper route to the bag.

This also only works if we can convince the Brewers to trade for Cobb to play 1b.

I believe the optimal solution given the thread is to go back in time and trade Huira for a wide receiver.

There are plenty of layers in this post that make it delicious given various thread histories on this board even if the spelling error on Keston's name wasn't intentional...but if it was intentional it just makes it gold.

well done!

Regardless, he will grouse about not ever drafting a 1B in the first round....

Hopefully a happy surprise that we still have him then?

No, I know he cleared and we still have him. Just still feels like the end of an era that never happened of a guy that I thought would anchor our offense for a decade.

I'm surprised this is in the Packers 2023 thread.  🙂
