The Low-A Carolina Mudcats trail Salem 4-1 in this week's series, but have 22-year old RHP Aidan Maldonado on the hill looking for second straight dominant start (4 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks in debut). 19-year old CF Jace Avina (0-for-12 with 10 Ks and 5 walks) returns to the lineup after exiting Thursday's game early on a hit-by-pitch. The team faces Red Sox #23 prospect (MLB.com), 19-year old RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz (1.74 ERA in 41.1 career IP).

A win today would give AA Biloxi a 4-2 series win at home over Pensacola. The team has 23-year RHP Justin Jarvis on the mound aiming to duplicate his last outing (6 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 8 Ks). Behind the plate is 25-year old C Nick Kahle getting his first start of 2023.

High-A Wisconsin can clinch its first series victory of 2023 with a win today at home over Peoria. 23-year old RHP Tyler Woessner aims for his second straight victory (5 IP, 3 R (1 ER), 3 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks in last outing). 23-year old 3B Ben Metzinger (1.017 OPS in 29 PAs) has reached base 6 times in the last 2 games, with 4 RBIs.

Some very rough defense from Salem in the Bottom of the 1st, and the Mudcats are taking advantage. Jace Avina has his first hit of the season, a single up the middle, and Hedbert Perez smoked a double to left-center. Great to see.

7 runs on 7 hits by 7 different players in the first inning! Woo hoo! Poor Gregory Barrios though. He’s now 0-for-27 with 1 walk.

The AAA Sounds have lost 2 in a row, but can still win the series with a home victory over Norfolk today. RHP Pedro Fernandez (2.25 ERA, 1.88 WHIP in 8 IP) gets another start after exiting Thursday's game early. LF Keston Hiura (1.045 OPS in 45 PAs) hit his 5th homer in 11 games yesterday and C Brent Diaz makes his season debut. Orioles' 19th-ranked prospect, LHP Drew Rom is starting for Norfolk.

Gregory Barrios has singled on a hit into center field in the 3rd inning, breaking his skid! RHP Aidan Maldonado pitched 3 scoreless innings and comes out for RHP Jeison Pena, leading 7-0.

We've got a nice start in Biloxi as well, as Tyler Black smacks a 2-run shot in the bottom of the first inning. Black now has 2 homers and 6 stolen bases in 9 games. 2-0 Biloxi over Pensacola early. This is some impressive power:

Pensacola got both runs back on 3 hits in the 3rd inning, but it could have been worse. A Carlos D. Rodriguez -> Zavier Warren -> Nick Kahle relay caught the last runner at home. Biloxi 2, Pensacola 2 in the 4th inning.

Peoria's gotten 4 hits off of Tyler Woessner, but just 1 run. He really bore down in this 4th inning, striking out 3 straight batters after a leadoff double. The Rattlers have just 1 hit, but it's a DH/1B Jesus Chirinos homer. Wisconsin 1, Peoria 1 in the 4th inning.

Tyler Woessner struck out 3 more Chiefs in the 5th inning, giving him 8 through 5 innings. Some keen eyes and a passed ball have given Wisconsin a second run in the bottom half of the inning. Rattlers 2, Chiefs 1. RHP Ryan Brady has come in for the 6th inning.

Chourio chases a changeup low and in for a strikeout. He's now 1-18 with a HR, BB and 6 SO since his 2 HR game on Tuesday.

C Darrien Miller has stolen a base and also thrown out two baserunners (awesome development). And now fellow catcher (leftfielder today) Alex Hall has blasted his first homer of the year, a solo shot. Wisconsin 3, Peoria 1 after 6 innings.

Pedro Fernandez did well to tip-toe through 50 pitches and 3 innings, giving up 1 run. Unfortunately, the Sounds offense has not yet broken through. It's Norfolk 1, Nashville 0 after 3 innings. RHP Tyson Miller has come in for the 4th inning.

Darrien MIller has now thrown out 3 baserunners. What progress!! Wisconsin and Peoria are into the bottom of the 7th inning. Rattlers 3, Chiefs 1.

Chourio ripped a double to LF but the inning ended after the Biloxi 3B had a very bad send and Collins was out at home plate pretty comfortably despite a poor relay.

Really questionable call with Tyler Black on deck who has been Biloxi's best hitter this season and Biloxi down 2 runs.

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. We were down 4-2. Give Tyler Black a chance with runners on 2nd and 3rd! And this is after stranding the bases loaded the prior inning. And flying into a double play the inning before that. RHP Abner Uribe has come on in to pitch the 8th inning. Pensacola 4, Biloxi 2.

It was a very bad send. The relay throw overthrew the first relay (tipped off the top of his glove) got to the second relay guy and then still easily cut down Collins at home. Really bad send down 2 runs.

Alex Hall goes yard for the 2nd time today, a 2-run shot to give Wisconsin a 5-1 lead in the 8th inning. Then RHP Taylor Floyd (what's he still doing in High-A ball?) comes in for a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Series win!

Nashville let the game get away from them in the 7th inning on some walks against RHP Cam Robinson, a fielder's choice which recorded zero outs, an error and LHP Bennett Sousa not being able to escape. What started as a winnable 2-0 game turned into a 7-0 rout, but at least Keston Hiura got to hit again in the 9th inning. Here's his 6th homer in his 12th game played:

Rough end to that Norfolk series after squeaking out some wins in the first half. Thanks for the updates, gents. Much appreciated! Gregory Barrios with a 3B?!? Great Scotts, Marty!

Other than maybe Black and Moore, I can’t think of any positional prospects who are playing really well right now. A lot of guys slumping to start the season.
