Ken Rosenthal highlighted the Brewers in today's roundup and while the news isn't earth-shattering to any Milwaukee fan, he reports that people familiar with the team don't expect a big splash at the deadline in either money or prospect capital, even for starting pitching.

He reported that the Crew will retain their "bites of the apple" philosophy (my words, not his) and not trade away any of their top prospects for a badly-needed starting pitcher. There are several starting pitchers likely to be available at the deadline, highlighted by Garrett Crochet, who is under team control for several more seasons. As teams like the Blue Jays spiral out of contention, premier starters like Kevin Gausman could also be placed on the market.

It's a controversial decision that will surely upset some Brewers fans but given the steady stewardship provided by David Stearns and now Matt Arnold, it's increasingly difficult to argue with the regular season results the Brewers have achieved for the past seven years.

I think we still see an SP upgrade at the deadline, I think the pieces teams would want are on the 40-man already, and a prospect like Tyler Black would draw some interest. Black reminds me a bit of Joey Ortiz before the Burnes deal from a prospect eval standpoint, so Black + Frelick(?), and an additional prospect in the back half of the system should net you a SP with 1.5 + years of control IMO.

Not surprising. I would be surprised. if we trade anyone in the top 10 range of our prospects.

What gets me is the term people familiar with the team. Does that mean fans or reporters. It kind of seems like there is no specific info here just speculation from the past.

Given that it's Rosenthal, I doubt he's talking to fans. He's in touch with agents, who are often the best source of information in these matters. And I'm sure he has contact with most, if not all, front offices.

I think Kikuchi would be an excellent add.   I like the Perkins for Kikuchi idea someone else brought up.

Also would be open to getting Bassitt involved with Kikuchi ax for something like Frelick, Dunn, 20-30 pitching prospect .

I think we dangled Black last year but didn’t find the right deal, but his value may now be LESS than last year - a year older, still no defensive position, no next level offensive achievement (e.g: more power) unlocked.

We can probably trade from our 2nd tier of prospects, excluding most pitchers - e.g. Luis Lara, Yophery Rodriguez, Eric Bitonti, Luke Adams, Mike Boeve, Dylan O’Rae, Juan Baez, Wes Clarke, Bishop Letson, Filippo Di Turi.

Agree for the most part. I probably wouldn't trade Yophery, Bitonti, Letson, or Di Turi I feel like as 18 year olds (19 for Letson) those guys all have top 100 prospect upside. To trade them now seems like selling low.

From your list I’d trade Orae Clarke and Di Turri to get Kikuchi and Bassett.   We’d need more added though .

I actually think that is why they recently called up Black and why he played so much in the San Diego series.  Think they were hoping he would catch fire and use that series as an advertisement to garner some trade interest with some teams.

I would keep Bitonti and Boeve.

Agree. And that's quite disappointing.

In last nights' Nashville game, Black was charged with an error. I didn't see it, but it was described as a missed catch. A missed catch. From a first baseman.
