If Mitchell had been running on contact, I think he would’ve had a decent chance to beat even a perfect throw. And if he’s thrown out, the runner on second should be over at third and you still have a chance to get the run in.

My feeling about the contact play is that you do it with runners on second and third and none out. 
 

if the lead runner is thrown out at the plate you should have runners on first and third so you haven’t  affected your chances of getting one run.
