I seriously need an explanation.

 

I can tell you that I was taught to run on contact when on third and there's a runner at first. Theory is tagging at the plate is better than the double play ending the inning.

 

Course I think I would be faster than Miller if I had a leg cut off.

JP said (and I agree)...Miller got tagged out to prevent a double play...a comebacker to the mounder, would have been an easy 1-6-3.
