An international prospect from Venezuela, Garcia inked a $1.1 million deal with the Brewers on his 16^th birthday in 2018. He missed nearly two full seasons after suffering a broken ankle injury early in 2019 followed by the pandemic wiping out the 2020 season. Garcia spent most of the 2021 season in the Arizona Complex League, but did have some success following a late season callup to Carolina. He began the 2022 season in Carolina pairing with several other teenage Brewers prospects playing with the Mudcats.

Garcia’s calling card is his defense, and those reports have been mostly glowing. He checks off the boxes that typically indicate a player can stick at shortstop in professional baseball. Those include good range, soft hands, smooth actions, easy footwork, and a strong enough throwing arm. These attributes combined with his instinctiveness and body control make it promising he’ll develop into an above average defender. Despite his adept play defensively Garcia is considered just a fringe average runner.

On the offensive side Garcia has shown developing power, but questions about his hit tool remain among the biggest concerns. Scouts believe he can be a 15-20 home run bat at his peak, but Garcia may need to improve his hit tool in order to consistently access the power in games. There are some indications he’s improved aspects of his plate approach, but his strikeout rates are trending into concerning territory. His swing can look a little awkward at times.

Garcia’s defensive abilities give him a high likelihood to eventually progress into the upper echelons of the system, but ultimately his ability to improve his hit tool will determine his possible MLB role.
