A--3062 hdmavs.com site summary: Danny Kolb threw seven shutout innings as the High Desert Mavericks defeated the Lake Elsinore Storm in the lowest scoring game of the year at Mavericks Stadium, winning 2-1 on Friday night. Kolb left with the Mavs leading 2-0 after seven before watching the Storm get back into it. After Aaron Dean worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, his first pitch of the ninth went over the left field wall for a home run for John Benick. Dean then allowed an infield hit to Joe Gerber and a single to Josh Carter. Justin Gordon was called upon with runners at first and second with no outs to hold a 2-1 lead. Gordon struck out Nick Trzesniak looking then got Marcus Nettles swinging. However, the third strike to Nettles was off the glove of catcher Joel Alvarado, allowing the runners to move up to second and third. Gordon earned his third save of the year by striking out Freddy Guzman on an 0-2 pitch to end the thriller and win it for Kolb. Kolb evened his record at 3-3 and has allowed only one run in his last 13 innings of work. The Mavs took the lead in the third as Chris Morris picked up a two-out single and scored on a Ralph Santana double. The Mavs made it 2-0 in the sixth, as Jason Belcher hit a ground-rule double with two outs, then scored on an RBI hit by Froilan Villanueva off of Storm starter Mike Thompson (4-3). Over 3,000 fans were treated not only to a pitcher?s dual, but also a triple play by the Lake Elsinore defense. With the Mavs leading 2-0 in the eighth inning, Dan Boyd and Jason Belcher hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. With runners at first and second, Froilan Villanueva hit a looping line drive headed for center field. Storm second baseman Josh Barfield made a tremendous diving back-handed catch for the first out. Dan Boyd, who was running on the pitch was too far off the bag at second, as Barfield stepped on second base for the second out and then lobbed it over to first base to complete the triple play, as Jason Belcher was also too far off the bag.

[ And I am still not happy with this draft unless some mathematician/statistician can explain to me that it is highly likely that the best player available was a position player in rounds 1-5, a pitcher in rounds 6-10, a position player in rounds 11-15, and a pitcher in rounds 16-20. ] It's the classic sine wave approach...

  16. Indianapolis 9, Toledo 4 (Game Two) Indianapolis Site Game Summary: TOLEDO, OHIO -- The Indianapolis Indians defeated the Toledo Mud Hens 9-4 Wednesday night completing their first series sweep on the road and winning their third straight road game for the first time this season. The Indians (22-35), who have won four of their last five overall, came from behind against the Mud Hens (27-29) for the second straight night. Keith Luuloa tripled twice and drove in three runs to power the Tribe offense. The Hawaiian native's first triple on the night came in the fourth inning and drove in Jim Rushford to give the Indians a 2-1 lead. With the game tied at 3, the Indians sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs in the seventh to take the lead for good. Steve Scarborough lined a one-out double to left-center and later scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. Luuloa's second triple of the game with two out in the inning drove in two more runs to make it a 6-3 lead. Wilton Veras then singled in Luuloa to give the Indians a 7-3 advantage. "It was great to see us come out with so much focus after sitting at the ballpark for seven to 10 hours," Luuloa said of the Indians who had arrived at Fifth Third Field early this morning for the first game of a day-night doubleheader that ended up being postponed until Aug. 6 due to rain. "When we keep our focus like that, we're a tough team to beat," the first baseman added. Indianapolis pounded out 15 hits against four Toledo pitchers. Every Indian had at least one base hit while six men in the lineup hit safely twice. Pete Zoccolillo extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-4 night. His run-scoring single in the eighth gave him his 11th RBI in the last nine games. The Mud Hens were their own worst enemy at times as six of the Indians runs were unearned. Errors on outfielders Andres Torres and Mike Peeples allowed the Indians to score single runs in the third and fifth innings. A fielding error by third baseman Warren Morris made all four Tribe runs in the seventh unearned. Dave Burba, rebounding from two rough starts, earned the win for the Indians to improve to 3-6. Burba worked into the seventh inning allowing three earned runs on eight hits. A.J. Hinch and Yohanny Valera accounted for all four Toledo runs. Hinch doubled, tripled and scored twice. Valera drove Hinch home both times with a single and a two-run homer. Valera's second homer of the season came in the fifth inning and gave the Hens a 3-2 lead. Valera also singled and scored the Mud Hens final run in the seventh inning. 23. San Jose (Giants) 6, High Desert 2 Borrowing the Game Summary from the San Jose Site for now: GIANTS COMPLETE SWEEP OF MAVERICKSThe San Jose Giants completed a three-game sweep of the High Desert Mavericks with a 6-2 victory in front of 2,012 fans at Municipal Stadium Monday afternoon. The Giants finished off the Mavericks with their third straight dominant performance by a starting pitcher. Left-hander Ryan Hannaman held High Desert hitless through the first five innings of the game before surrendering a two-out double to Dan Boyd. This was the only hit that Hannaman allowed as he retired the next batter he faced to end the inning and his outing. In the three-game series San Jose's three starting pitcher's (Greg Bruso, Anthony Pannone, and Hannaman) had a combined ERA of 0.86 (2 ER/21 IP) while only allowing 10 hits. Ramon Soler gave the Giants an early 1-0 lead when he led off the first inning with a single and then reached scoring position by stealing his 10th base of the season. Soler was then driven home on consecutive sacrifice flies by Angel Chavez and Daniel Ortmeier. San Jose scored another run in the bottom of the third inning, and then broke the game open with a four-runrally in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Justin Knoedler doubled down the left field line to open the inning, Soler then attempted a sacrifice bunt but Mavericks pitcher Jeff Robinson threw the ball down the right field line. This allowed Knoedler to score and Soler to advance to second base. Julio Cordido and Chavez kept the inning going with consecutive singles before Daniel Ortmeier finished off the scoring with a RBI double. San Jose reliever John Thomas entered the game in the top of the seventh inning and scattered three hits in two scoreless innings of relief. In the top of the ninth inning the Mavericks mounted a two-run rally versus Wes Hutchison but the right-hander completed the sweep by inducing a pop fly out off of the bat of Chris Morris. 24. Ottawa (Orioles) 6, Indianapolis 3 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians stranded a season-high 13 runners on base Monday afternoon in dropping the final game of an eight-game homestand 6-3 to the Ottawa Lynx. The Tribe loaded the bases in four separate innings, but were only able to bring three runs home on the game. Lynx starter Rafael Pina (1-2) performed like a magician over his 5.0 innings of work escaping from the danger he created by allowing only a single run to score despite giving up seven hits and five walks. The Indians (20-35) had a chance to blow the game open in the first inning when the first four batters reached base safely. A man caught stealing, and a double play on a leaping catch of a line drive kept the Indians off the board. The Tribe put the first two runners on again in the third inning. Bill Hall's line drive was snared by third baseman Jose Leon to save a run, and Pina then retired the next two men he faced. Pete Zoccolillo doubled to lead off the fourth inning extending his hitting streak to seven games. Two fly outs advanced him home with the Indians first run. By that point, the Indians were in a 5-0 hole. David Manning, pitching on three days rest, allowed four runs on five hits and four walks before being removed to start the fourth inning. Ottawa scored three times in the third inning courtesy of an RBI single to right by Napolean Calzado followed by a two-run single by Chris Lemonis. All three runs scored after Manning (3-3) had retired the first two batters in the inning. Lemonis finished the ballgame with three RBI, and all nine Lynx batters collected at least on hit. The Tribe scored its final two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning off of Ottawa reliever Mike Garcia. The Indians loaded the bases on an error, single, and a walk before Garcia plunked Mark Smith on the shoulder forcing Mark Budzinski home and leaving the bases loaded for Zoccolillo, who lined a sacrifice fly to left field bringing home Hall. Garcia then struck out Jason Conti and Joe Lawrence to end the ballgame. With his sacrifice fly, Zoccolillo has now collected at least one RBI in each of the last seven ballgames, as he totaled 10 RBI for the homestand. The Indians play their next five games against the Toledo Mud Hens. The team will first travel to Toledo to play three games in two days at Fifth Third Field before returning on Thursday for a two game series at Victory Field. Pasqual Coco (4-4, 5.26) will face Nate Robertson (3-2, 3.84) in Tuesday night's ballgame.
