Beloit 7, Quad City (Twins) 2 Tony Gwynn Jr with an RBI single, and others join in on a mini offensive barage... Riverbandits.com Game Summary: The River Bandits equaled a season-high with four errors and had no answer for Beloit?s five stolen bases as they were defeated 7-2 by the Snappers on Saturday at John O?Donnell Stadium. Scott Tyler got the loss for Quad City, while Bryan Kennedy belted his fifth home run of the season in defeat. Quad City?s Danny Matienzo, who entered the game on a 13-game hitting streak, went 0-for-4 in the contest. In his final at-bat, in the eighth inning, the first baseman popped out to short. Matienzo?s streak, which includes four home runs, ties Seth Davidson for the longest of the season by a Bandit, and the third-longest of the season by a Midwest League player this year. Beloit took the lead in the top of the first inning, on a pair of choppers up the middle. After Kennard Bibbs had a single to open the game and stole second, Tony Gwynn had a bouncer into center for a 1-0 Beloit lead. Quad City tied it up in the bottom of the second, with a brief two-out rally. Alex Romero walked, and Jose Morales followed with a screamer down the right field line, a two-run double for a 1-1 tie. Morales was 2-for-4 in the contest, and has hit safely in his last nine starts, during which he?s batted .370 (10-for-27). But the Snappers scored three times in the top of the fourth inning. Travis Hinton and Mario Mendez each had RBI singles and Pedro Esparragoza had an RBI double during the rally. Quad City tried to rally, as Bryan Kennedy led off the bottom of the inning with a solo homer, his fifth long ball of the year, second on the team. After the next two men reached, Jose Liz hit into a rally-killing double play to end the threat. The Snappers broke it open in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three times against Kevin Cameron. Cameron hit two men with pitches during the frame, and the Snappers took advantage of a Seth Davidson error to score a pair of unearned runs. Scott Tyler got the loss, allowing four runs in five innings to drop to 2-8 on the year. Peter Tautor went 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball, while Steve Murray had one scoreless frame in his return from the disabled list. Beloit Box Score: Tony Gwynn on base three more times -- his name sure looks nice in that #2 spot; wonderful bounce-back effort from Dennis Sarfate; Josh Alliston has been oh-so-solid out of the pen... Indianapolis 7, Richmond (Braves) 3 Jim Rushford with the grand slam.... Pete Z goes yard as well... Pascual Coco picks up win #8, and stays red hot... Speaking of red hot, Billy Hall is absolutely flourishing in the leadoff spot. Indyindians.com Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians returned to Victory Field in grand fashion Saturday night defeating the Richmond Braves 7-3 as Jim Rushford drove in five runs for the Tribe, including four with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the third inning. Tribe pitcher Pasqual Coco turned in another quality start allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits over seven innings. Coco (8-4) retired the first seven hitters he faced, while giving up single runs in the third and fifth innings, as he won for the seventh straight time. It was Coco's bat, however, that started a two-out rally in the home half of the third inning. With two outs, Coco dribbled a swinging bunt down the third base line that was fielded by Richmond pitcher John Ennis, but the throw to first base was not in time. Bill Hall then ripped a double to left-center advancing Coco to third. Jason Conti loaded the bases when he was hit by an Ennis offering. Rushford wasted no time in delivering the first pitch by Ennis high and deep to right field for his fourth home run of the season, and putting the Tribe on top 4-1. It was the Tribe's first grand slam of the season. Pete Zoccolillo added some power of his own in the bottom of the fifth inning blasting a two-run homer to right off of Ennis with Rushford on base after having singled home Hall two batters prior. Hall was 3-for-4 in the contest with two runs scored, a double and a stolen base, raising his average to .368 in the 14 games since being moved into the lead-off spot in the batting order. The Tribe (37-43) and Braves (35-48) will continue the four-game series at Victory Field on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when Nate Teut (1-2, 3.62) makes his first start since returning from the disabled list for Indianapolis. Teut will be opposed by Richmond's Jason Marquis (5-3, 3.26). Quad City (Twins) 6, Beloit 2 The juniors provide the offense in defeat... Tony Gwynn, Jr. reaches 3 times with an RBI in his first pro game... Fielder with a solo shot... riverbandits.com game summary: The Quad City River Bandits turned a season-high three double plays and scored three times to break a tie in top of the fifth inning as they defeated the Beloit Snappers 6-2 on Friday night at John O?Donnell Stadium. T.J. Prunty went six innings to pick up the victory for Quad City, while Nick Blackburn pitched the final three frames to earn his first professional save. For the Snappers, second-round pick Tony Gwynn reached base three times in his pro debut, while Prince Fielder belted a solo homer in defeat. Quad City turned its first double play in the second inning when, with a scoreless tie, Mario Mendez grounded sharply to first. Danny Matienzo made the pickup, stepped on first and then fired to Seth Davidson at second. Davidson tagged Travis Hinton to end Beloit?s first threat. Quad City then took the lead on a two-out hit in the next half-inning. After Bryan Kennedy singled and Alex Romero doubled to left-center, Jose Morales hit a line drive into center to score both runners for a 2-0 lead. The Snappers came back to score a run in the top of the third inning, all after two outs. Chas Terni walked with two away, and moved to second on a bunt single by Kennard Bibbs. Gwynn sliced a line drive to the opposite field to bring home Terni. Beloit then tied it up in the top of the fourth, as Prince Fielder led off with a line shot over the wall in right field. Fielder?s drive was his 12th of the season, and his fourth in seven games against Quad City pitching. But Quad City struck back in the bottom of the fourth, pushing across three runs against Tom Wilhelmsen. After Omar Burgos walked, Jose Morales hit into a fielder?s choice, five straight baserunners reached to chase Wilhelmsen. Singles from Garrett Guzman and Trent Oeltjen loaded the bases, and Kaulana Kuhaulua laced a single into center to score two runs. Davidson then singled to re-load the bags, and Danny Matienzo walked to put Quad City on top 5-2. Quad City turned crucial double plays to end threats in both the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, with the tying run at the plate, Prunty coaxed a chopper from Prince Fielder that turned into an inning-ending double play. In the eighth, it was slugger Jeff Eure bouncing into a 5-4-3 twin killing against Blackburn. Quad City added to its edge in the bottom of the eighth, on an Alex Romero single that brought home Matienzo. Matienzo extended his hitting streak to 13 games in the contest, tying Seth Davidson for the longest hitting streak by a Bandits player this season. West Michigan?s Juan Gonzalez had a 17-game hitting streak in May, longest in the MWL this season. Prunty picked up his fourth win of the year for the Bandits, allowing just two runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked one. Blackburn, a starter-turned-reliever, went three innings, allowing no runs on three hits. He struck out two as he picked up his first pro save. The problem here, Gumby, is you're only responding to 1 out of 4 of my points, but i'll indulge.... The Cards have a stud pitcher in Danny Haren, who's made his way up to AAA. They have another stud in Jimmy Journell in AAA. I think it's only a matter of time before St. Louis separates themselves from the pack a bit. I think Cinci will get worse, and Pittsburgh will stay sub-par, making for a more polarized division. Chicago and Houston are the two wildcards here, and their success will depend on how their young pitching pans out. [ Why throw away 4 years waiting for the guys in AA to become competitive? ] Who said anything about 4 years? 2005 is only a year and a half away. I'd assume the team would spend money at the beginning of 2005 to supplement their youngsters... Having a few quality players around to show them the ropes would probably be a wise idea. -

[ Given the current state of the NL central, a team with 87 to 90 wins would be right in the thick of it. ] That's a best-case-scenario outlook, and it assumes: - The NL Central will remain tight next year - Players who are exceeding expectations in 1st half 2003 (Podsednik, Jenkins, Sexson, Kinney, Perez, Estrella, Kieschnick) will be around next year - Players acquired to play in 2004 will meet or exceed expectations - The injury bug that has so far NOT plagued the Brewers, will stay away. I think point number 4 has been huge for the club this year. I'm not going to talk much more about it, because I don't want to be the one who jinxes it. -

Just gotta say it's nice to see the AZL Brewers team faring much better offensively than last year... For comparison's sake, here's last year's stats: www.brewerfan.net/ViewTea...&year=2002 -

[ Lets not forget that Vaughn joined the 50+ hr club soon after being dealt. It doesnt really matter but its just a case of a proven player being dealt for prospects who turn out to be fools gold. ] We should never had traded that Wickman guy away either... after all, he was a proven veteran. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif -

[ Square were you consulting your magic 8 ball for all of those predictions? ] They were simply projections.... Keith Ginter may be the second coming of Jeff Kent, but I doubt it. Many people here would agree that a team with this payroll won't be competitive until a combination of home grown talent and acquired talent is set to go. It's common knowledge that Melvin's plan for the home-grown portion of this plan will be ready to go by 2005. I'm not saying all Huntsvillian's labelled as prospects will be superstars, but more than one should be major league caliber ballplayers. Ned has the team playing above their heads right now, and it's great to watch.... but don't expect them to get all that much better this year. The team has about 2 and a half decent starters and a bullpen that's not as solid as last year's. More importantly SQUARE, you didnt answer my question. Who do you suppose milwaukee could lure in Jenkins place who could put up his numbers for cheaper? Where is the list? When did I ever say there was a list? Don't get so combative. Jenkins is reasonably prices this year, but 8.25M next year is quite a reach. Is it inconceivable to believe that Sexson or Jenkins couldn't be moved for OF talent? Jose Cruz Jr's only making 2.5M this year, and the team has an option on him for 4M next year. He certainly wouldn't have signed this year with the Brewers, but a team that has talent, it'd be a different story. There are bargains to be had every off-season. just realize that the production we get out of a streaking Geoff Jenkins is not the production we'll always see from Geoff. -

[ Who would replace jenks if he left? Let me know about all your brilliant ideas. ] - I think bars should have single service cigarette machines - I think the open faced sandwich is an abomination and should be abolished - I think the Brewers do not have the talent it takes to be trying to make a push in 2003. - I think the Brewers do not have the talent it takes to be trying to make a push in 2004. - I think that a low existing payroll will allow the Brewers to take on salary in trades in 2004 and sign free agents in 2005 to field a team that will certainly be in contention in 2006 and regarding Greg Vaughn, the trade netted: - Marc Newfield.... he was a bust, but contrary to popular belief, he wasn't the only player Vaughn was traded for. - Ron Villone (we won't mention his role in the Grissom debacle) who gave us two solid years in 1996 (3.28 ERA) and 1997 (3.42 ERA) - Bryce Florie... who gave us a decent year in 1996 (4.32 ERA, mostly in relief with 8 starts)... He was traded for Mike Myers along with Santiago Perez (and Rick Greene) Vaughn would have been a free agent... Do we think Vaughn would have resigned with Milwaukee at a normal market rate? -

Scoop, what's the point of holding on to Jenkins to simply try and achieve the lame .500 goal?... He'll be 8M next year, and Jenkins always manages to wind up injured while trying to make some spectacular play. He's gone on record as saying he's not going to change how he plays the game. Why play for 2003, when there's a better chance for a legitimate shot down the road. Or maybe i'm just being "stupid". -

I suppose it all would depend on what level you're currently playing at. A contract attorney might be fine for the initial sign, but agents schedule all the PR, public appearance, card signings.....yadda, yadda, yadda. -
