  1. I just wanted to share this article I read today. It's starts with Mussina's Hall of Fame chances, but is really about how the media and fans misuse stats.
  2. Bill Hall Kevin Youkilis Jason Varitek Jonathan Papelbon Joe Torre (Can I count him? Because I loathe him mostly from his managing.) Derek Jeter And #1, without a doubt, Ken Griffey Jr. I'm surprised at all the Joba hate. I honestly had no idea. (I just *heart* him.)
  3. Glad to hear you had a great time!
  4. I wish. It was due to some dumb luck, really. My theater hosted an event for Tippi Hedron earlier this week, and during that event our house manager met a woman who runs TV and Movie promos in Minnesota. The next day she was talking with the producer of The Serious Man, and she remembered our theater and gave them our number to call. I was the manager on duty that day, so I was the one who did what little legwork remained to setup a time for them to come in and view some test footage. I knew Deakins would probably be there, which is why I brought my DVD, but the Coens were a massive bonus. But everything went really well, and they seemed quite happy that we only wanted autographs and not any money, so we think their is a good chance they might come by again once principal photography starts. I'm trying to convince our company to rent them a screen for dailies, but I doubt that will happen. That would be so cool if they came by again. Please keep us updated!
  5. I saw the Clone Wars yesterday and (surprise, surprise) it wasn't good. I only saw it because my boyfriend wanted to and it was his birthday. A Star Wars movie could be made by 5 year olds with crayons, but as long as Lucas is attached, he'll see it. So I went in with low expectations, and even though it had a few redeeming parts, it was pretty bad. My favorite parts: Spoiler [+] Super R2D2. I never knew he could fly from a planet to a spaceship. I also never knew that Anakin had a padawon. The film ends abruptly, and there she was standing next to Ani in the closing shot. I was waiting all film for her to get killed off. Yes, she was annoying, but mostly because it wouldn't make sense if she lived. So I guess Lucas is planning a Clone Wars 2? But my favorite part was when we see Jaba's son. The plot revolves around the Jedis searching for him. What would you expect him to look like? Well it was a baby. A baby blob, with 'wah-wahs' and all. The padawon even said "aw, so cute." I then turned to my boyfriend and started laughing. He rolled his eyes and said "Lucas does it for the kids." Just then the kid behind us says "This movie is so funny." Oh, and the animation was baad. Obi-wan looked like he suffered some sort of facial trauma.
  6. Trenni seems the type who wouldn't condone or encourage that behavior. I'm glad Bruce complained. That sounds like an awful experience, but I'd like to think that this is the rare (unless you're at Fenway).
  7. If you're going to just make a post to brag, stick it in random thoughts. I want some gossip! What were they like? What did you guys chat about? I'm more interested in the Coen brothers, but I'm sure Deakins has some fun stories.
  8. Beef jerky has always scared me. I don't know if it's because I'm a vegetarian, but whenever I see it in bodegas, in those cases, I just stare. Isn't that also a 'Slim Jim'? I know the people in this thread aren't talking about those (Slim Jims), but that's what I think of when someone mentions beef jerky. I should really try it before knocking it, though it seems the equivalent of getting one of those pickles-in-a-pouch.
  9. I'm sorry I inferred something from your post when I shouldn't have. Still, it doesn't matter how a writer tailors their articles towards the readership. Is it that hard to want good reporting and smart baseball discussion without condescension? That's my problem with TH, but honestly I'm not really as bothered as it might seem. It's just been a pet peeve of mine for some time.
  10. You're comparing WI's major paper with the NY Post? The Post is way more tabloidish. You could use the Daily News, and again Feisand isn't as good as Kepner, but still yards ahead of TH. To me it isn't about readership, it's about being a good reporter who can communicate professionally with fans.
  11. But it can be done. Look at Tyler Kepner, Yankee beat writer for the NY Times. He's a smart baseball guy, can write for both the casual fan and the stat geeks, and writes daily on his blog (where his opinions are present, but it's never "well this is what Tyler Kepner thinks on this..." He responds to comments and criticisms (on both the blog and emails) with professionalism. TH doesn't bother me because I've come to understand that he's the majority, but it doesn't have to be like that. It really is a shame that the JS thinks he's the best option.
  12. That's just like saying "This poop is better because it doesn't have flies." Just because he's not the worst, doesn't absolve him from criticism. The whole lot of them are just terrible and Brewers fans deserve better. I don't care what TH writes anymore, but there should be some form of responsibility. Maybe it's a personal thing, but I grew up a baseball fan in a family where no one liked baseball and I didn't have any friends who did either. This was before the internet so I had to rely on newspapers or announcers. What if there some poor kid out there who wants to learn more and thinks the best is TH? That is why we should all wear bf.net paraphernalia as much as possible. And I agree kramnoj, I definitely think TPTB know what he's doing and don't care because it's traffic to the site. I enjoy beat writer blogs, and I've seen similiar behavior elsewhere, for longer. I just hate that bitterness from the older writers, and it's super frusturating when they're your only option. At least he isn't Murray Chass.
  13. I don't care about his attitude, I just think Fielder is the bee's knees.
  14. Does anyone know where I can find a video online of the opening ceremonies?
  15. I don't know if anyone cares, but Yankee beat writer Tyler Kepner made a post about this on the NY Times baseball blog. I'm still interested in what Betemit or the second baseman Kinsler were thinking.
  16. I saw the strangest play during the Yankee game today. Top of the 9th, one out, Yanks leading by 2 in TX, Betemit on 1st, Molina hits a soft chopper to the second baseman, it bounces once before him, and he throws to the first baseman, who steps on the bag. But when the ball was hit, Betemit started going towards second, but then went back to first AND was standing on the bag when the ball arrived. So he was safe, and Molina was out. Why didn't the 2nd baseman throw to second? Why did Betemit go back to first so quickly? It didn't look like it was going to be a popup to me. I hope one of the writers ask Betemit or the second baseman what they were thinking.
  17. Wildwood Crest, NJ (It's been a family vacation destination every year since I was a little kid. I'm probably biased, but I've traveled all over the place and I still love to go back there every year.) If I had to live abroad, I would do Granada, Spain again.
  18. If you go, let me know what you think.
  19. Pretty sure you aren't his 'type'. Not that there's anything wrong with that. That's why I said beard. Does no one know what that means? My boyfriend asked if it was to describe a sex act. Yes, allegedly, he's gay and I would still marry him (on the condition we would have an open marriage so we could still get laid).
  20. I'm Italian (and Puerto Rican), spoiled, and one of my favorite baseball players is Paul O'Neill. However I'm really disappointed in how he handled the Yankees reissuing his number this year so I wish I could change it to 13 for my most favorite baseball player evah Alex Rodriguez.
  21. David Beckham is gorgeous and I just adore Joba Chamberlain, but for marriage I might have to go with Anderson Cooper. Smart, funny, and so cute. A little too old for me, but I would totally be his beard. (allegedly)
  22. Thank you for posting this, although I can't believe he didn't speak on the hilarious sex scene in the pool.
  23. Italian - Forlinis (on the border of Chinatown and Little Italy) Spanish - Sevilla (west Village) German - Rolfs (lower East side) [but I think it might be more of a Christmas thing] Columbian food - Corona, Queens (I mean the neighborhood, this is not the name of a restaurant) ETA: There's a steakhouse on the east side that opened a couple years ago by people who once worked at Peter Luger's. It became my father's favorite. I can't think of the name though. But if you would really like to try it out, I can get the info for you. It would be very pricey, unlike the restaurants above.
  24. O. M. G. I am right there with you. I really can't explain it but everytime I catch it on cable I have to watch.
  25. I recently found out, well I guess in the last year or two, that Kiera Knightly was in Episode 1. She was the bodyguard. Kinda cool.
