Link Report for Friday 5/1 - Welcome to May!
TooLiveBrew replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
So I really want to go see Medeiros's next start. He started on the 22nd & piggybacked on the 28th, which should line him up for a start on Sunday. Is there any reason to think he won't start on Sunday? -
While I think your analogy is really dumb, and I mean no disrespect, it is dumb. There plan was to field the best team they could. The players still have to play and perform. This season falls squarely on those players not playing to their abilities. There is no reason to think that this team could not compete for a playoff spot if they play to their abilities. Will they? Doesn't seem that way. If you "predicted" this start for the Brewers it is because you are a negative nancy boy who will always see faults in the roster no matter how good it is. I'm not sure why any Brewer fan would be upset at signing guys hoping they would play to their "career norms" and actually be contenders. People forget quick how big of a joke this franchise really is and the recent success does not go back very far. This post flies in the face of the environment BrewerFan fosters. Don't keep posting name-calling & denigrating stuff -- it's not welcome here. Disagree, but don't be a jerk.

Crew's Peralta, Cubs' Lester vie for first victory By Andrew Call / Special to MLB.com | 4/29/2015 5:14 PM ET Cubs left-hander Jon Lester, signed to a six-year free-agent contract during the offseason, will look for his first win when he faces Milwaukee at Wrigley Field on Friday. On the surface, the Brewers might be coming to town at a good time for Lester. Milwaukee has a .227 team batting average, with just two regulars, Adam Lind and Jean Segura, hitting better than .250. The Brewers are also missing three injured starters -- Jonathan Lucroy, Carlos Gomez and Scooter Gennett -- though Gomez could be activated from the disabled list sometime this weekend. Milwaukee will start right-hander Wily Peralta, who is also looking for his first win despite having walked just six batters in four starts covering 25 innings. Things to know about this game: • Lind, Milwaukee's top hitter so far this season with a .333 average, has hit .103 (3-for-29) against Lester. • The only other Brewers batter with more than seven career at-bats against Lester is Gomez, who has gone 1-for-14 against the left-hander. • Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo are both career .458 hitters (11-for-24) vs. Peralta, with a combined five doubles and seven home runs.

Lohse, Cueto both look to continue recent success By Andy Call / Special to MLB.com | 4/27/2015 11:00 PM ET The Reds and Brewers continue their series Tuesday, with Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto hoping for similar results from his most recent start -- also against Milwaukee. Cueto limited the Brewers to one run on five hits over eight innings last Wednesday and will be pitching on an extra day of rest due to Saturday's rainout. Milwaukee will counter with Kyle Lohse, who also fared well in his last start -- also against the Reds. Lohse allowed just three hits over seven innings during a 4-2 Brewers win last Thursday in Miller Park. Things to know about this game: • The Brewers came into the series in fifth place in the National League's Central Division, the Reds in fourth place. Milwaukee has spent the last 16 days in last place. • The Reds have won or tied 12 of the last 18 series vs. Milwaukee at Great American Ball Park. • Milwaukee's starting pitchers had a combined 2.61 ERA over the previous five games before Monday, when Jimmy Nelson was charged with seven earned runs over 2 1/3 innings.

Yes, I think you are. I don't think player valuations fluctuate as wildly in baseball talent evaluation circles nearly as much as they do in fan estimations. If I'm acquiring a player, it's going to be based on factors like swing mechanics, & not whether he's OPS'd .600 or .800 for a couple of weeks.

Nelson carries stellar start into series opener vs. Reds By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com | 4/26/2015 4:33 PM ET The Reds slumped into Miller Park last week and found some footing. The Brewers will try to do the same at Great American Ball Park beginning Monday night. Milwaukee needed a win in the finale of a four-game series against the Reds to avoid being swept in the first meeting between the teams, and fared no better against the Cardinals over the weekend. But the Brewers do have their most consistent starting pitcher on the mound in 25-year-old Jimmy Nelson, who carries a 1.35 ERA into play, and is coming off a Wednesday start against the Reds in which he worked a career-high eight innings. The Reds counter with veteran Jason Marquis in the opener of this three-game set. Things to know about the game: • Since a quality start in his Reds debut, Marquis has allowed 10 runs (nine earned) and 16 hits over nine innings in his last two starts. He was still the winner of a 16-10 game at Milwaukee on Tuesday while giving up five earned runs and nine hits over five innings. • The Brewers will have right fielder Ryan Braun and third baseman Aramis Ramirez back in the lineup after both players requested Sunday off, according to manager Ron Roenicke. Both men are at the center of the Brewers' early-season struggles, with Braun batting .230 with a .279 slugging percentage, and Ramirez hitting .197 and slugging the same. Between them, Braun and Ramirez have two home runs and 10 RBIs. • Jay Bruce, who pinch-hit Sunday, should be back in right field for the Reds after a two-day break -- Saturday's rainout and a day off from starting duties Sunday. Including his Sunday afternoon strikeout as a pinch-hitter, Bruce is hitless in his last 14 at-bats with nine strikeouts.

Lynn, Cardinals go for three-game sweep of Brewers By Jenifer Langosch / MLB.com | 4/26/2015 1:08 AM ET MILWAUKEE -- While the Cardinals seek to end a six-game road trip with their second sweep of the season, the Brewers will take the field on Sunday looking to find some traction as they prepare to hit the road. Milwaukee will enter Sunday's 1:10 p.m. CT game at Miller Park having lost 10 of its last 11 games. The Cardinals, in contrast, have won nine of their last 10. Milwaukee's Mike Fiers will take the mound for the first time since becoming the first pitcher in more than four years to allow two grand slams in a game. Fiers has lost all three of his starts this season, including one to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on April 16. Lance Lynn draws the start for St. Louis and will be looking for a bit more run support to back him up. Though he's allowed one earned run in each of his three starts, he's received just five runs of support. Things to know about the game: • Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is hopeful of returning to the lineup on Sunday, though that will [depend] upon how much the soreness in his right knee subsides before then. Molina hasn't played since being knocked out of the Friday's game after taking a fourth-inning foul tip off his right knee. • With three of their Opening Day position players on the disabled list (second baseman Scooter Gennett, center fielder Carlos Gomez and catcher Jonathan Lucroy), the Brewers on Saturday used their 17th different starting lineup in the season's first 18 games. Roenicke has employed a different lineup in 15 consecutive games, and with a day game after a night game Sunday, the streak has the potential to continue. "The constant change, I don't like that much," Roenicke said, "[although] some people have been very successful doing it that way. Joe Maddon has done it for years. Mike Scioscia does it all the time and has been pretty successful. I guess what it tells you is that if you're changing all the time, something isn't working." • Matt Carpenter will carry a 12-game hitting streak and 23-game on-base streak into Sunday's game. Both streaks are the longest active streaks in the Majors.

If any team is willing to pay like Segura's a career .800+ OPS shortstop, I think the club should be all over that kind of deal. I really like Segura, & would have no problem with the Brewers keeping him through his arby years. But if some club sees him as their long-term answer at SS & are willing to pay like it, I don't think you should pass that up. Ultimately I think he's going to wind up being a mid-.700s OPS bat, which is nothing to sneeze at for a SS.

Cardinals, Brewers meet for second time this season By Jenifer Langosch / MLB.com | 4/23/2015 3:59 PM ET Trending in varying directions these first few weeks of the season, the Brewers and Cardinals will meet for their second of six head-to-head series beginning in Milwaukee on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm CT, with St. Louis' Carlos Martinez set to take the mound against Brewers righty Matt Garza. The Brewers were able to snap their eight-game losing streak with a win on Thursday, though they enter the weekend series as bottom dwellers in the National League Central. The Cardinals, in contrast, sit atop the division and are just a little more than a week removed from having taken a home series against the Brewers. St. Louis is 8-3 against division opponents this year, while the Brewers have a 3-10 mark. Things to know about this game: • Matt Carpenter will enter the game riding an on-base streak of 21 games, the longest active streak in the Majors. He has hit safely in each of the team's last 10 games, with multiple hits in eight of those. • The Brewers hope Garza can continue their first streak of quality starts. Brewers pitchers combined for only two such outings (six or more innings with three or fewer earned runs) in their first 14 games, and hadn't had one in nine straight games before Jimmy Nelson delivered eight innings with one run against the Reds on Wednesday, and Kyle Lohse followed with seven innings of two-run ball Thursday afternoon. • Yadier Molina is expected back in the Cardinals' lineup after sitting out Thursday's series finale. It marked the first start Molina has missed this season. Also, the Cardinals will be rejoined by outfielder Peter Bourjos, who missed the Cardinals' last series while on paternity leave.

I just noticed that Bayern are & will be missing both Robben & Ribéry. That changes my prediction to "I have no freaking idea"
-
Bayern. But really it's a group where any of the remaining clubs could win & it wouldn't be surprising.
