  1. Well, you know, the 2nd guy in the lineup needs to bunt...
  2. It really is a game... the prices of fines are basically arbitrarily set, and it's pretty arbitrary how the DA will almost automatically lower the fine if you bother to show up in court.

  4. I was just going to post about the mechanics/AZ thought, biedergb. I hope the organization can get him running smoothly again.
  5. Circa 2008: I personally never thought [A-Rod] was a clutch player. The majority of his HRs and RBI seem to come in blowout wins and losses.
  6. Any manager who did would probably be roasted for doing it as well Yeah, playing your top hitting prospect, and one of the top hitting prospects in the game (at the time) -- that's crazy talk!
  7. Firing Macha will do absolutely nothing the Brewers should just ride it out with Macha and then decide on that at the end of the year. 121 103 108 120 106 121 114 110 118 Those are Yovani's pitch counts from May 1st. If the Brewers can do one thing in firing Macha, and it's decreasing Gallardo's pitch counts, I want them to do it. If Randolph would just continue to do the same, then imo there's no point in making a change. This is the absolutely most important guy to the future of this club, and Macha is pitching him like the team is in a pennant race (average of just over 113 pitches/start from this sample). It makes my blood boil.
  8. To me, the question should also contain, 'Is it reasonable to expect him to continue to be a #2 starter as he ages?' As he starts losing velocity, he's really going to get harder.
  9. I think jwill's point was that he's not sold on Gamel's bat as a 1B prospect that's anything special. I agree with Invader's approach of McGehee at 1B & Gamel at 3B
  10. How is it obvious? Why can't it be that she wanted to achieve something? Of course that will generate attention, and frankly I think it's cool that she could keep those interested updated via the internet. I don't get the vilifying of the parents. I'm sure it's probably because she wasn't an American, but no one really seemed to notice or care that Aussie 16-yo Jessica Watson successfully circumnavigated the oceans solo. And, from that article, one more note as to why I believe this was something motivated from a sense of adventure within Sunderland, and not some shameful media ploy -- I feel I'm as big a cynic as anyone, but man. Where do you draw the line between attention/publicity stunt & a simple desire to achieve something great? Once she turns 18, would there be some magical bean she or her parents have earned to be free of scorn?
  11. You'd prefer to let him walk so you can, at best, get a supplemental draft pick or two that's proven absolutely nothing? There are plenty of examples of good pitchers that are blocked & stashed in AAA. Whether they have a Track Record™ or not is of no concern to me, I'm concerned with whether or not they have good velocity & stuff.
  12. I could not be any more enamored with Mat Gamel. This kid is going to be very, very good.
  13. Try calling an insurance agent of the same company, but in a different office. Ask it as a prospective customer, like what their policies are about speeding tickets & hiking rates. Frame it as that you drive a lot for work or something. I believe you can also show up in court to contest & go to a meeting with the D.A. (or whoever would handle that where you are). The answer will probably be that you can either take the ticket as-is, or pay a lot more now & avoid the 4 points on your license. But I'm definitely not a lawyer, only have my one personal speeding ticket (which was much smaller, got it in a 35 zone) as experience.
  14. Not to mention diverting the attention of these resources if needed for someone who truly needs help and hasn't set out to be the 'first or youngest' whatever You think she shouldn't be sailing so they can rescue someone else that's more deserving of rescuing? I think the fact that she survived & was rescued is a testament to just how well-equipped she was for this undertaking. I do question the sanity of any parent that would allow their 16 year old daughter to undertake such an endeavor. I won't agree or disagree with this personally, but here is a quip from her mother on this topic: "Could there be a tragedy?" MaryAnne Sunderland told ABC News. "Yeah, there could be. But there could be a tragedy on the way home tonight, you know, or driving with her friends in a car at 16."
  15. I didn't get to watch the game tonight, so can someone not named Anthony Witrado give me a recap of Parra's performance? His line for the night looks pretty good, which would be back-to-back good outings for Manny.
  16. He's been very frustrating this season, and frankly a season like this is Exhibit A of why the Brewers should absolutely not pony up the kind of money he's seeking for an extension. I hate that it's killing his trade value, too.

  18. If the Brewers sign Fielder, it's going to be in free agency imo. At this point, being a Boras client, he's just way too close to FA to realistically consider signing an extension. I definitely don't want to see him signed as a FA, & I don't really want to see him extended at this point, either.
  19. I definitely thought the back line was soft in the first half. England started to pick them apart around the 70-min. mark in the second half, too, but to their credit the US defenders got the stops for the most part. Overall I'm not sure if it was more that the US defenders played well when they needed to, or if they got lucky in England not executing & finishing well. It was definitely good to see the US fare well against one of the stronger sides in the tournament, but England was just not very impressive today imo. If anything I think Buddle might start for Findley and Torres for Clark. I don't know anything about personnel matchups regarding Slovenia & Algeria (heck, not even that much about the US), but I would like to see more of Findley. I thought his pure speed was a nice asset on the field today, even if he didn't ultimately wind up generating much for himself. I like the combo of a bigger guy like Altidore & a smaller, speedy guy like Findley. Of course, I'd like even more to make sure we have our best forwards out there, so whoever that is, I'd be happy with it. Oh, and I agree with Strawboss on Bradley being sloppy with the ball. I don't think he necessarily played poorly, but he was one of several US players that short-circuited attacks by making simple, sloppy misplays on the ball. That was the most frustrating aspect of this match to me -- I felt the US shot itself in the foot time & time again by having sloppy touches on balls that should/could have either started or continued pushes at the UK net.
  20. That's what your focus is on after someone was saved from perishing in the ocean? I understand the feelings of scorn to the parents of that 'balloon boy' stunt, but sheesh.
  21. I agree that it was clear Carragher couldn't keep pace, Paulus. It really could have been a red card there. The US possession was troubling as well. They were just flat-out sloppy on a lot of instances, and you have to be very sharp to score goals in this tournament. I'm encouraged by the fact that they elevated their play for the most part in the second half... but I'd have loved to have seen them focus more on getting the ball to Altidore when he was matched up with Carragher. Another positive note was that Onyewu looked really good today.
  22. Not sure if everyone remembers or not, but this is the young woman who was attempting to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world (her brother accomplished it at age 17 in '09 -- geez!). She had fallen out of contact, and two distress beacons on her ship had been activated. She was recovered today. Link
  23. Gerrard was fantastic today for England. His defense was a force of its own in the first half.
  24. I'll open with the fact that my soccer knowledge is very limited... but did anyone else feel that the Carragher yellow-card tackle of Findley in the 60th minute was incredibly ill-intended? Carragher's head & eyes were looking down the entire approach & slide, his right foot & studs planted firmly into Findley's ankle, and then Carragher swept his left leg across & delivered a swift blow to the backside of Findley's lower leg. Perhaps that's proper tackling form, but when I saw that replay I thought aloud, "he tried to break his ankle"
  25. Well, alright. Not sure Hart would be my first choice to hit second, but he's definitely much better than the 'last choices' that Macha has been using in Gomez & Escobar. I'd prefer to see the 6-7-8 be Lucroy/Kottaras--Gomez--Esco, though. Actually I'd rather see Kottaras in the 2-hole on days he's playing instead of Hart, but for now I'll just be happy there's some positive change.
