  1. Said it all for me, crewcrazy. It's amazing to me how many guys get their big shot at another guy's expense when it comes to injuries. Let the Lucroy era begin! To be fair to Macha, the catcher spot is probably the only area of roster management for which I'd give him an A grade on the season. If he keeps the playing time split like he was with Zaun & Kottaras, I'll be happy. Because, man -- George has been phenomenal so far.
  2. I haven't seen as many games on the MLB package as I have in the past but CV's stuff looks better than I ever remember. His fastball seems to be 2-3 mph faster(91 vs 88) and last night his breaking ball was excellent. I actually can't remember seeing his change-up last night and that is more or less his signature pitch. Has Petersen had a positive effect on CV? Why does his stuff seem so much better. I can't speak well to the breaking pitch, but his FB velocity it up since he isn't a starter & doesn't have to work 5 or 6 innings. I doubt it has a whole lot to do with mechanics, but you never know.
  3. I'm not liking this pitching matchup. Prove me wrong Chris & the rest of the guys!
  4. Accolades such as executive of the year Which Doug Melvin of course won in 1996 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. On their first goal Gooch didn't appear to really jump on the corner, but on the replay it looked like the guy did have an arm on his shoulder, so maybe he has an excuse for not getting up to high He said he felt fine (interview clip was also played on the radio this a.m. -- NPR), but that the guy just jumped before him & held him down by his shoulder, like you saw.
  6. I learned on the radio this morning that Gomez is leading the Primera División in scoring. Wouldn't he be a suitable complement to Altidore?
  7. There is not one impact arm in the entire farm system. Aside from Jeffress, of course. Peralta & Rivas aren't far off either imo
  8. Weeks got off to a hot start; I'm sure that's playing a role. He'll probably fade in the balloting
  9. Excellent post, monty, and I think you've got a good shot at being right. The Brewers don't really play anyone all that impressive aside from the Cards until their next interleague series against TEX. It's just too bad the hole dug is so deep.
  10. I understand marijuana gets players suspended & then banned. I'm asking if underage drinking, which is illegal as well, also nets a suspension and/or eventual ban.
  11. Nate made a good point about how hot Ortiz has been (OPS of nearly 1.200 in May). With that production, there's really no reason the BoSox would need to trade for Fielder, unless they'd be sending Ortiz out in that or another deal.
  12. I'm not trying to be combative, but what are the many sources? I know obviously reasonable speculation would say that $90M is about as high as the Crew can go, but I just don't remember reading anything specific like you cite.
  13. Serious question -- is an underage alcohol ticket something MiLBers get suspended for?
  14. As soon as I am in line for a million $'s I'm sure someone will find all those skeletons and a few I don't even know of. He was handing a kid millions so it was his job to know as much as he could. I tend to view character flaws as something that has warning signs thus something he should have known was a risk. Two things -- 1) Do you want the Brewers hiring P.I.'s to investigate players? Because if no one tells anyone he smokes, there's no other semi-realistic way I know of to find out 2) Smoking marijuana is no more a character flaw than drinking or smoking cigarettes
  15. Not your fault that there were like 57 Fred Millers http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The first surgeon to do breast implants Taking the clue into context, this answer is really funny
  16. If you find condescending tone, it must be how you read it. Maybe you are predisposed to find an alternate opinion as condescending? There's no condescending tone. If there is any tone trying to be displayed, it's frustration. Or maybe I read, "Gee golly" & "Aww shucks"as condescending, like I expect others might. Or maybe you're right, if someone disagrees with me, I assume condescension. I do that all the time. The reason these nuggets seem so valuable is because of the load they had to carry because nothing else was in place. I understand this point, but I believe he's done yeoman's work in that regard, especially with his more recent finds -- McGehee, Kottaras, Coffey, Axford, & Narveson. Those 5 guys alone have saved & will save millions of dollars in payroll in recent/coming seasons, and in each case they are good producers at their positions (I'm assuming Axford will have success... certainly could be wrong there), not just roster filler. In addition, his job of turning Pods into (essentially) Carlos Lee was fantastic. I'll ask you again if you can produce another GM with as much success at claiming guys off the waiver wire &/or MiLB free agency, instead of pointing to the flukiest draft pick in a long, long time in Pujols (and, yes, I do think Jocketty should rightfully garner praise for that brilliant pick).
  17. That's Fred E. Miller -- the founder, not Fred C., who was his grandson, iirc Fred C. was part of the group that brought the Braves to Milwaukee... your hint in the OP made me think baseball+beer http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif EDIT: Here's a pic of Fred C. Guess I should've image searched him before guessing
  18. D) "But Doug Melvin finds nuggets". Every GM finds nuggets. Aside from your condescending tone, this is what I take issue with most. I'd like to know who the other GMs are with a track record of turning out guys off the waiver wire or as MiLB free agents as effectively as Melvin.
  19. Yeah, well said MJ (& Zaun). I have to agree with you guys, reading that put a smile on my face.
  20. I'd be all for that... I was hoping to get to see Kentrail with Wisconsin this season
  21. You often cite that people don't have an answer, but I think the biggest hole in your theory is the assumption that you can go out & trade for impact pitching as easily as selling high on a hitter. I know you can produce two or three semi-recent examples, as we've had this discussion many times. I just think it's a bit misleading to so often talk about selling high & bringing in top pitching when the fact of the matter is that it just doesn't happen very often. My conclusion from that is that it's a darn hard thing to do (Melvin even tried to bring in Buchholz last season when he was squeezed out of Boston's rotation), and not that all GMs aside from Andrew Friedman aren't competent enough to build that way. We know what the problem is, how do we fix it? It would seem like the best answer is trade high-caliber pitching, which seems a bit like spinning the wheels to me. Cost-controlled impact pitching is the new OBP in baseball. The market deficiency, to sneak the Moneyball phrase in there, is gone, and now it's not as easy to come by as it was even a couple seasons ago. I think the way we could think about this is that we'd have to offer up something like Jeffress+ (imagining that he hadn't had all the drug test baggage & missed time). That's roughly what I think the cost would be to acquire someone like, say, Clay Buchholz. I know one name you might drop is Niemann of the Rays, and iirc you read or know that he was being shopped for a bat. And yet, he wasn't traded. I just seriously doubt that no other MLB team was competent enough to notice that pitching is more valuable than hitting at this point, and offer a solid bat if that's all it would've taken. I'm much more inclined to believe the Rays were shopping him to see if anyone would overpay (and kudos to them for doing so). I want the Brewers to acquire top-flight pitching, too. I just don't think that's as easy anymore as you do.
